Sam Bennett: Contract Negotiations

I agree,

If Bennett wants to play for a big "traditional" hockey market, he'd be better in Montreal.

Actually....I'm afraid that he would consider Montreal. The team will be good in the next years and he'd become a fan favorite there. And as much as I hate the team, I have to admit that there's probably no better place to be for a hockey player when the team is good. He's exactly the kind of player they need to take the next step.

For us $10m is an obvious no, but maybe on a team ready to come out of a rebuild who needs a 2C that goes beast in the playoffs?

This really comes down to whether or not Bennett wants to continue competing for championships or wants to max out the one big payday he's going to get in his career. I honestly couldn't blame him for the latter.

I don't think any team that's serious about winning a Cup will offer $10m annually.

In a perfect world, I would love to keep all of Ekky, Marchy and Benny. The math doesn't work when you also consider we need to give Mackie a new contract, and replace one of Nosek/Sturm, a 7th d-man and a back-up goalie for $19 million.

Feel like there is no room for Marchy. And Bennett/Ekblad have to take hometown discounts. If we have to lose one, I'd rather lose Ekky (having Jones), and try to find his replacement in free agency, preferably someone in the $3 to $5 million range. Would love for Zito to find the next Mikkola or Forsling.

Yeah, Marchand is gone after this season. Bennett is most likely coming back but Ekblad returning is iffy. Zito has the cap space to re-sig Ekblad but his ask cannot be +$7mil and his health is a major concern (the dude is taking PEDs just keep up with the Seth Joneses).

I think maybe he can offer Ek 8 years (yikes!, I know), but in return for a significant discount... something in the 4 to 5.5 million range. Reality is we would probably need to move on from Ekky in about 3 to 5 years if we are being honest. Forsling's contract is a negotiating point I think.

Among the three, Ekky is the fat odd man out. After two Stanley Cups, and a few elbows, someone else can anchor the first pair with Orrsling.

Then we might be able to keep Benny and Marchy. It’s the priority!

I don't know if it's the PEDs or just adjusting his game as Maurice has alluded to, but Ekblad looks f***ing incredible. Still don't trust his legs to hold up, though.

8 years? That fatty won’t be able to do a light jog for 30 seconds much less actually skate

I fully expect him to take a Rhino-like discount, Rhino was rumored to get 11+ last year, signed for 8.6

Plus we can offer 8 years and the rest can offer only 7 years which inflates the yearly number.

Marty Biron is the guy that said 10 mil

He also covers Buffalo. Wouldn’t surprise me if they are the ones looking to overpay for the culture shock

If we over 7.5 and Buffalo offers 10 and Benny takes it, the suffering is solely on his shoulders
I would be 100% fine if Benny and Ekky switch salary numbers for next year.

I don’t see Zito locking up Ekblad or Bennett
for a lot of money or long term.
That’s not his style.

He’ll offer them a fair deal for 4 or 5 years.

Then it will be up to them to determine.
Whether they want the money or if they want
to hunt for more championships.

They can’t get both elsewhere.

We'll get Benny at 7.25 and trade Arod+ for Byram and Biron will cry.

If he wants to stay. I bet our offer is 6.5x7

If he wants money some idiot will offer him 9M$

9.5M$ in Toronto would be the same he made just under 8M$ in Florida
8.5M$ would be just over 7M$ in Florida

I doubt he's getting under $7m even if he stays. That's his base.

Depends. If he really wants to stay. Bennett is gonna be good for 2-3 season and then I bet he drops off a lot. His play style is punishing

All comes down to does he want to really stay with Panthers or go for money (1-3M$ per season) more than we offer
