I wouldn’t care if Bennett and Ekblad got 8 years deal, even though it sounds like a receipt for disaster…

If those guys win one more, you have to give it to them but make sure they’re gonna try and go for that dynasty !

Then in the last few years, you just enjoy the memories… :nod:

Can't see a world where Ekblad is worth more than Gus. Gotta let him go unless its a discount IMO.

We'll have 9.5M$ more in cap space when we LTIR Tkachuk for the season

Jones isn't worth more than Gus but we didn't get him at 50%. Gus is an outlier, it's one of the best deal in the league if not the best. It won't be a yardstick on defense, but it can help shave off some money to get people to buy in the team friendly deal aspect of things.
I just think it'll be hard to get Ekblad to take a pay cut after he's had, arguably, the second best season of his career when the Cap is exploding. I would be impressed with 7M like Jones.

Not saying he is worth more… Not in my eyes or scouts ones…

But Gus was a waiver pick-up that came out of nowhere to be a true first-pair defenseman…

Ekblad is our former 1st overall pick, one of the longest tenure Panthers, record-holder who is making 7.5M from his old contract, entering free-agency at 29 as a physical productive RHD who’s a champion… He has much more pedigree to his name.

He is not taking a big paycut… Maybe you can say he settles for 7M like Jonesy, but he will be our highest paid defenseman.

Not saying he is worth more than Gus, just that his case for highest paid on our team is a valid one IMO.

It all depends on the term for me.

I can't be bothered to do the maths but my sense is that we sign both Benny and Ekky to around £7m-7.5m for 8 years and let Marchand walk, probably back to Boston TBH. For Benny, that would be a team friendly deal, and for Ekky it would be an overpay but can't see him signing below what he currently makes and the market for RHD seems very tight. I'd be comfortable with that as long as we don't give out full NMC along with those contracts - giving us the flexibility to trade one/both when our window is up and/or they decline badly.

I love Marchand but he's 37! He's been amazing during these playoffs as a third liner but he would be too expensive for us to keep in that role.

OTOH, of all TDL acquisitions ever, Marchy so far has by far been the best I remember. As good as Tarasenko was, Brad had been an even a couple of notches above. Because of that, if really really line to keep him.

My personal preference of the order of importance of the critical guys that need to be signed or let go:
1. Benny
2. Marchy
3. Ekky

I’d like to keep ERod too, but if he’s a casualty later on, that’s the price of doing business. I don’t want Mikkola or Samo fall to friendly fire. Or Bob.

I get it - I love Marchy as well. I just remember when our blue line was terrible and there didn't seem to be a lot of options out there to replace what Ekblad brings. Or maybe I just like my men cute but very dumb, as my bf is aware :D ...

Oh, and who would we bully if Ekky wasn't around?
