Dermott + Petan for Bennett wouldn’t be bad. Calgary would have to retain less than 50% to make the salaries even.

Leafs should be holding onto their cap space for a much bigger fish come deadline time. He just makes too much for what he would bring to this team. Not a clear upgrade on what they truly need. Not worth it IMO, hold onto your chips.

Nice to have Dermy and Lehtonen as our #6/#7 D but if we are going to lose him eventually, it might get a deal done.
Agreed, the good thing about it is that Sandin now becomes our 7th dman which isn’t a bad thing either.

Truth be told, never given Bennett much thought before, but some of you guys are really making some compelling arguments to bring him in as a reclamation project.

The only warning flag for me is Ferris as his agent. I can’t stand that guy and hate his entire M.O. Marner still has a bad taste in my mouth and how Ferris went about it just makes him trash. Blind siding the Flames and going straight to the media with Bennett’s trade demands just keeps proving what a snake the guy is.

with Bennett needing another contract shortly, just really don’t want much to do with Ferris if there is another way around it.

Ferris does that with all of his clients.

I'd say bust .. getting a 4th liner winger from a #4 OA draft pick who was a centre is beyond disappointing.

Given the Leafs limited cap space, I don't see it anything making sense. Would rather save that cap space for a more impactful top 9 winger.

Bennett for Kerfoot, straight up.

We can't afford to lose that secondary offense. Bennett just can't provide it. We'd need to move a guy like Engvall and maybe a pick or another player to have Calgary retain.

Don't know if it makes sense for them though.

Kerfoot is nice to have as our #3C but it is not like his line has done much this season. You gain some cap space to make another move if you move Kerfoot though.

Bennett might spark the Tavares line which has pretty much been impotent the last few games.

According to Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun, he feels the Leafs could land Bennett in a deal, if they are willing to include Alexander Kerfoot and another piece.
Leafs could use a player like the available Sam Bennett. They need some edge on their third line. They wouldn’t be able to get Bennett 1-for-1 for Alex Kerfoot, but if they could sweeten the pot just a little, they might be able to find a deal here … Bennett, by the way, played on a Marlies super team in the GTHL that had Connor McDavid, Josh Ho-Sang and Roland McKeown on it.

Toronto reporters have this insecurity complex that if anything comes from Toronto , it has to be +++ to make the deal ... Kerfoot is 2 years older, has a higher cap hit, is smaller but has proven about as much as Bennett. They both have an agitating style and would both be reclamation projects for both teams, it's more about new scenery than it is a hockey deal.

The only way I’d do Bennett for Kerfoot is if Calgary retained 50%.

3.5M for a 3C is average.

2.5M for a 4th liner is a 1.5M overpay.

Sam Bennett isn’t anything more than a 4th liner.

I wont admit to be overly familiar with Bennett's game TBH. I really only watch the battle of Alberta's and the games against the Leafs. I am not sure I would say he was noticeably bad in the games I did watch. I think there is no doubt that he has not lived up to his 4th OA draft ranking, but I wouldn't go as far as saying he is a bad hockey player. I think we need to remind ourselves, that we are not needing secondary scoring. our secondary scoring comes from the JT line. We need tertiary scoring, and players who make it hard to play against us. I think Sam Bennett could do that for us. I really don't see how he is any worse than Vesey. They have similar numbers, yet Vesey has spent more time in a very potent top 6. Not to mention, Vesey really hasn't shown me he is overly difficult to play against. If retention were part of the deal, and the price was right, we would be stupid not to consider it

SCOUTING REPORT
A highly skilled player, he also displays very good two-way acumen and the competitive fire of a future captain. Will also show a feisty side that's tough to play against. Can play either wing or center. Will need to get significantly stronger if he is to continue to play his abrasive style in the long run at the NHL level. Also, he must prove himself as a goal-scorer in the pros. Needs more defensive work to play center.
Long Range Potential: Talented, feisty forward with upside.

I'd take him on as a reclamation project.

I think Kyle Dubas has proven 2.5 for a 4th liner is a way overpay, Just no need for that.

I really think Bennett would be a good fit. He grew up a die hard leaf fan, plays with grit, has had success in the playoffs, and a change of scenery has the potential to really ignite him. If the cost isn't too high it can be a very solid buy low option. Flames fans don't want to see him go.

to be fair, I think if we do acquire Bennett we have to bury the idea that this is a reclamation project. He is what Jake Virtannen currently is for the Canucks, what Zach Kassion was for most teams he has played for. I am all but confident he will never live up to his draft position. But that is quite OK with me, as long as we don't pay the price for the player that reflects where he was drafted lol

I agree, I think we take him hoping we can get more out of him but realize he may only ever be a 4th line plug. Some players do better in a new environment/ new system. I tend to gravitate towards guys who play with an edge.
