I don’t see how the leafs make the cap work with this unless Calgary retains half.

Twice isnt insignificant.
The way he has been playing for the past two season, they should be scratching him a lot more. The guy has mashed potatoes for brains.

Twice in two years... mashed potatoes for brains. Really, he's been playing poorly? I'm thinking, you really aren't watching this.:laugh::laugh:

You’re right. He plays a smart game out there.... and very productive.
What does he do well?

Like I think the best the leafs could do would be Engvall for Bennett (50% retained)

He’s not making it to the trade deadline and Calgary might be scratching him again tonight against the Oilers. That says all you need to know that he will not be around the team until they trade him. They can’t get much for him and he is every bit as good or getter than Vesey and others on the team. He’s getting slammed unfairly in this thread.
It’s all about the money so we really can’t afford him. I would like him in this lineup of ours

He defends well. By every measurement possible. Lowest GA/60 on the team. Second lowest xGA/60.

So what does this thing mean?
That our bottom four defenseman are actually our best 4?

It means Rielly gives up the most chances, and is the poorest defender, at defending.

Holl has given up the fewest chances, and might just be the best at defending, though we actually give up less goals when Dermott is on the ice.

Could it possibly mean that we put our weakest defenders against weak opposition?
And we put our best defenders against tough opposition?

Flames' fan just chiming in with my two cents. I will start this off by "I do NOT want Bennett traded".

This is Bennett to Flames' fans:

Bennett just really needs a chance . . .
The Leafs are already overflowing with forwards who just need a chance . . . Robertson, Engvall, Vesey, Anderson, Boyd, Brooks, Barabanov . . . and more.

They don't have enough cap space and roster spots to give a chance to every player they already need to give a chance to.

I would bet that almost every team is the same. Not too many stars, but plenty of fringe players around the margins who just need a chance.

Its not much of an endorsement.

Everybody just neds a chance.

Bennett could be fine as a grinder up and down the LW.
Could carve a niche in a Hyman role, possibly.
Not sure what the best fit is. Don’t know Calgary’s situation too well.
If it’s Kerfoot, you probably need a C coming back too.
Dermott’s an overpay.
The other younger guys I’d rather keep ideally (Engvall and Anderson).
Maybe if it were expanded abit, seeing how TO could use some cap flex, and probably another depth D to expose for expansion, but I’m not sure what that would look like.

Certainly not with Holl and Muzzin. Dermott isn't facing the toughest competition, but he's done very well by such measures when he has. Dermott isn't an offensive guy, but he's very solid defensively. He's the kind of guy you don't notice, and that's a good thing. Rielly hasn't been very good at all... well ever defensively, and worse this year... except last game, he was pretty good, but then Vancouver was terrible.

I like Dermott, and it saddens me to think the Leafs are likely to lose him one way or another.

If they want him gone that badly, then they know damn well they will have to retain. I like his sandpaper and motor.

Does this include special teams numbers?

If so, being on the PP vs being on the PK would skew these numbers significantly.

In regards to Bennett or any other player who is available that can make our team better, you ask and find out if there is a viable option to obtain him.

Leafs are in a unique position this year and if they have to move some prospects to improve, it should be done. This goes for any position, that's the nature of sports and this team, though not at their peak per se, they are at a crossroad of sorts.

So, you look at where you can improve and you try to do so. I think Bennett could be a very good addition.
