Petan > Bennett

No, he isn't Zeke. Petan had a nice game last night and maybe we need to stay tuned to see what he can make of himself here with another opportunity, but the guy has 28 career NHL points. Bennett is good for that much production in a normal Sam Bennett year.

Bennett is 24. We aren't drafting him with a 4th overall selection, but if we acquired him with some salary retention and no value given up I could see us trying to groom him along the lines of a Zach Hyman. Hyman didn't even make the NHL until he was 24. There's a competitive nature in him and some junior pedigree that hasn't been harnessed properly by Calgary. Maybe there isn't much there, but if Jimmy Vesey is good enough for a reclamation project, so is Bennett.

Considering we passed on koneckny to trade down and take him, it saddens many Leaf fans.

Dermott has definitely fallen short of what I thought the Leafs were trying to do with him. With his natural talent and skating ability and status as the defensive anchor on those Connor McDavid/Dylan Strome teams I thought the Leafs were identifying some kind of Kris Letang, Duncan Keith in the rough. Maybe the Hunter advantage at play. Why else pull so many draft day moves?

So far, he seems like a common young, skilled defensemen who plateaus developmentally because they don't have the processing power to take the next step.

Interesting player due to his pedigree, being local and his playoff performance, but I feel he's a walking bad penalty.

I don't know how to say this nicely but Bennett stinks and if it wasn't for his draft position he'd be out of the league by now.

He is bad at hockey.

Bennett could very well stink at hockey, but he doesn't appear to stink at playoff hockey. So if the price is cheap, it doesn't hurt to take a look.

Playoffs career goals scored:

Tavares 15 G
Matthews 12 G
Bennett 11 G
Nylander 5 G
Marner 5 G

No thanks, he's not good. I'd rather have Kerfoot at $3.5 than Bennett at $2.5

Does this include special teams numbers?

If so, being on the PP vs being on the PK would skew these numbers significantly.

In regards to Bennett or any other player who is available that can make our team better, you ask and find out if there is a viable option to obtain him.

Leafs are in a unique position this year and if they have to move some prospects to improve, it should be done. This goes for any position, that's the nature of sports and this team, though not at their peak per se, they are at a crossroad of sorts.

So, you look at where you can improve and you try to do so. I think Bennett could be a very good addition.

Such stats will always be 5v5

With his salary and distraction potential, coupled with his lack of production, I can't see him being moved for much more than a song. That would also assume Flames eating salary.

It's up to teams to decide if "potential" with his energy injection is worth a shot. I think Flames might have devalued him in this process. Maybe just as well.

Yeah, if we were drafting him at 4th. overall it would take at least a 5th. overall to land him. ;) Not a player many have wanted to dump since he was acquired.

It isn't about getting the most talented player, we're talking a bottom 6 player who might bring some more substance to the team.

Cap space is also an asset.

You think Hanifin is better than Rielly?

From a defensive perspective, the Hanifin/Tanev pairing, is one of the best in the league so far in this young season. Hanifin in a little younger, and has four years (including this) left on a reasonable $4.95 mil contract. This is probably the rationale behind such a move being suggested.

I haven't watched enough of Calgary's games, to really pay attention, and see if Hanifin has greatly improved, or known defensive expert Tanev is the one doing the great job here.

i think that is an overpayment, he is on the taxi squad, I think the flames would be happy to get rid of him. No need to add Dermott and they can keep the 3rd/4th.

Be an excellent deadline pickup. He certainly would have helped them make the playoffs last year.

Agreed. I see his current cost is around a 2nd, or something of similar value, at the most. A third and Engvall/Barabanov is about as high as I'd go at this point, for Bennett at 50%.

I think having Spezza AND Thornton on the 4th line together is a bad idea. Robertson there also isn’t ideal but I’m sure you can find him some extra minutes on the power play if he can’t get an exemption to play in the AHL.

Hyman - Matthews - Marner
Bennett - Tavares - Nylander
Thornton - Kerfoot - Mikheyev
Robertson - Spezza - Simmonds

If Lehtonen takes advantage of his opportunity right now, I can see that opening up a possible Dermott trade.

Hanifin stinks

Oh? Yost: Calgary Flames might have found another dominant defensive pairing - TSN.ca
