Idle thought - everyone's thinking of looking for a 4th line LW, but we've got a bunch of LWs, both officially up and down. I think people are thinking Rust for 4th line RW, but I doubt that happens and I don't know who's gonna play there if he's not there.

Rust, Jarry and a 1st for Skinner with salary retained, Sheary for a defenseman. Profit.

Guentzel-Crosby-Sprong
Skinner-Malkin-Hornqvist
Hagelin-Brassard-Kessel

Trade Kessel next off-season to get cap for re-signing Guentzel and Skinner. Although I'd be fine with trading Sprong for an equal RHD prospect if they get Skinner.

In general I'm fine with that, if you can get them to retain 1.5 or 2, you can fit in a Comeau for L4. Puts you in a bind next year though.

We won 2 cups with Kuhnhackl on the 4th line LW. I don't think anyone should be concerned with the 4th line. Just have 3 young speedy guys that can kill penalties and are cheap cap wise.

Rust is too good (and going to be too expensive) to play on the 4th line. If that's where people are putting him, then trade him for defense depth.

Rather have Rust than Skinner. Rust is better for this team and will be cheaper to resign.

I'd like to not add more one dimensional wingers who can't play D. That is a recipe for disaster come playoffs when the games get tight. Certainly not for Rust, a rare two way winger on the team. He and Hornqvist pretty much.

I still don't understand the logic for anyone (not you) saying ZAR sucks as a 4th line option. The only time we saw him there was for a handful of games when he was coming back from injury as a rookie. That's not a big enough sample to to determine anything.

I didn't think much of his first few games before he got promoted or his return. Excuses for both but so far the strong parts of his game appear to be having the game around the boards and net to benefit from playing with really good players, and not doing the hard grind in his own zone. He should be capable of doing good on a 4th line, but it didn't seem to have come together just yet.

And tbh, personally, I'd rather seen him down for more time with the puck on his stick. Uncle Jim doesn't seem interested in that though.

That's being far too generous as far as the pens parting with good young assets. Rust, Jarry AND a 1st? Salary retention or not that's crazy.

Him and Hagelin* Hornqvist isn’t Sheary but he’s not great outside of the other teams slot and wall.

I'm not sure how exactly I'd feel about trading for Skinner. But I do know that I wouldn't include Rust or Sprong. Sheary and Jarry? Maybe, but I'd be hesitant to even do that. Besides, we can't conclusively know if Skinner would be here beyond one season. And if the Canes want more we can look elsewhere. Skinner calls the shots as to who he's traded to anyhow. Which limits the return the Canes can expect.

Hagelin doesn't really score enough goals to be a 2way winger.

I think Hornqvist is a solid defensive winger aside from His lack of speed.

Do all of these Skinner rumors have something behind them or is it just speculation? I haven't been able to catch up on anything because of work.

PIT is reportedly in on him with other teams looking for a scoring LW'er. LA(who just signed Kovy so probably out), SJ, STL.
SJ seems to have the edge on landing Pacioretty.
That leaves STL and PIT and now a Cane's reporter says Skinner may be calling the shots of where he'd like to land.

One things for sure is JR's been searching for an upper tier LW'er for awhile to balance things out. While he was C searching last season he still had the LW spot in mind(Galychenyuk who can play both C/LW, Patches interest, finishing 2nd on Domi).

Only thing i'll say is this team is much better and more balanced if you swap out Sheary for Skinner and have the option of Hags/Skinner playing 3rd line LW or really any of the 3 LW'ers can be slotted in the top 3 LW spots(Jake, Skinner and Hags).

Only issue is what is Skinner gonna cost. He likely comes with retention and then theres no doubt JR wants to keep him past this season, so an extension may be part of the deal.

I can see JR maybe going for 1st+Jarry+CapDump(likely Sheary) but would Carolina? If he's a must move right now and PIT's the only place he can go, maybe they accept that...Dunno.

That’s still important when we need to win a battle (especially when we’re hemmed in for a while) and he wins the battle a lot.

That’s where Sheary gets exposed especially if there is another small guy on the opposite wing and teams know that.

It’s in the media and another poster who seems to know some things mentioned speculation about Sprong and Sheary for Skinner.

Also if you watch Skinner highlights, he's not afraid of the net front. He's also a Metro killer, especially WSH, PHI and the Rangers.
He's probably the latest player JR will pursue with a passion but that doesn't mean he's gonna sell the farm(1st+Sprong+Jarry) to get him.
Why there probably may be interest in Kunitz(reportedly, cuz JR knows he may strike out on Skinner), JR has pennies to spend in FA'y and you're not gonna get much better than Kunitz in that $ range.

Oh believe me I know, Hornqvist is one of the best players in the league in the slot without a doubt. He’s just nothing special in his own zone or the neutral, he’s more than worth it, he’s just not particularly good defensively compared to Hags.

Question.... If Skinner signs an extension and then is immediately traded, any % of salary retained is for this year and the extension also, right. Does he have to wait until July 1 to sign an extension?

He’s always around the net with his stick on the ice. He would be gross with Crosby.

The only #1s left on the market now are Karlsson and Letang. Id be shocked if Karlsson re-signs, so if /when he gets traded it could get interesting with Letang. I dont think he will be traded but maybe a desperate team makes an offer JR really likes.

Hornqvist is a two way winger?

We can potentially have both Rust and Skinner.

I don’t see the point in moving Sprong. He’s not gonna have a ton of value. He’s worth more to us as a Phil replacement on the PP. And as an ELC player, we’re gonna need him if we want to keep this band together.

Skinner can replace Phil at ES. And he’s 4 years younger. You can use Guentzel, Sprong and two D on the top unit to replace Phil on the PP.

Plus you balance out your LW and RW depth while cutting cap for next year.

Guentzel-Sid-PH
Skinner-Malkin-Rust
Hagelin-Brassard-Sprong

You have a strong defensive wing on every line. And a top line that’s proven to dump on teams in the playoffs.

Jarry+Sheary+19 1st for Skinner works for me. Use the remaining cap space on a proven #2 goalie at some point. DeSmith will suffice to start the season.

Pursuing Skinner should have nothing to do with Kunitz. They serve differing needs. No one goes to the store thinking "I want a really nice whisky, but if I can't find one, I'll stop at Arby's on the way home".

I kinda wonder whether Rutherford wasn't talking with McPhee about Tatar as a potential back up for striking out on Skinner.

A STL reporter says Skinner is nixing deals:

A Canes reporter is saying they haven't come to Skinner yet to ask for approval(tweet liked Canes advanced stats guy):

He can't sign an extension until 7/1 with anyone, but if they want Carolina to retain, they couldn't do a sign and trade. Not allowed to retain on only one year of a deal. Normally I'd say it would be best for Carolina to wait until after the other big wingers are signed in FA, but in this case, if Skinner refuses to sign an extension with anyone but us, then he can more or less control his own fate.

So we could get a pretty good deal here, if Skinner prefers to come here.

Edit and there you go above, I didn't realize he had a NMC, must have kicked in last year or something. Even better for us, if he wanted to come here.

Think the goal here for JR is to balance out the wings as best he can. ATM he has too much of the same thing in Sheary and his 3M + Phil + Sprong.

If he can get an upper tier LW'er(Domi/Skinner) to push the Hagelin's down while keeping his Phil's and Sprong's, great.
If he has to open up cap and buy low on some grit that can score(Kunitz and others), he's open to that as well.

I would assume that Skinner would be open to playing in Pittsburgh. Would be funny if the NMC JR gave him was the key to JR getting him back.

I think we all need to take a moment to appreciate the greatness of that name.

I'm also guessing its possible that Skinner or his agent have informally put a kibosh on potential landing places without Carolina having ever said ought formally to him.
