I still say the draft order should be determined simply like this:

Playoff teams the same way. Non playoff teams in order by their record over the last five years. You can’t pick first twice in 5 years so if next year we have the worst record over five years the next team who hasn’t moves up and we move back.

It rids year by year tanking like 2015 and the fear of Edmonton getting three in a row and then another one and gives the best player to the team literally most deserving.

Canes fan here. Congrats on the 1st! Canes have a solid blue line. They need a solid winger. What are the chances you guys don't draft Dahlin?

I would say zero. This lottery worked out perfectly for both of our teams. We can’t rub two good D together to save our lives while you are stocked. And you get the top forward in the draft when you thought you’d be picking 11th. A rare great day for the two franchises with the two longest playoff droughts. Svechnikov is a stud.

I know there was some discussion re Johan Larsson. There's an article in sportsbladet - one of the biggest newspapers in Sweden who cover hockey more than most. Headline is, 'I'll take good care of Rasmus.' Larsson goes on to say that he's really excited that Rasmus is coming and that he'll take good care of him and show him around and make him feel at home. Sabres european scout Christian Ruuttu claims it's the ideal place for Dahlin since there is nothing to do there except play hockey. But Larsson disagrees and says its a good place once you get to know it better and socially it's fine. All the players live close to the rink and there are always things to do although he doesn't specify what. And if there are any problems there will always be someone to help out.

It just ends with him being happy being selected for the WHC since it was a surprise and how he's used to being on PK but would love to be a bit more offensive and score some goals.

”Jag kommer att ta väl hand om Rasmus”

He's someone who might be salvageable if speed is put around him, but he also may be survive because he doesn't bring that himself.

My friend pointed out that it was odd to see Waddell wearing a turtle neck under his suit jacket with mismatched socks. Anyone else see that last night?

Absolutely ZERO. He is the McDavid of dmen and I never bothered penciling him in or expecting him because we never are lucky enough for this. Imagine what Edmonton would want for Eichel/#2... and Eichel is>>>Svechnikov.

Honestly Slavin+#2+ just for starters.
Haha he's not asking us what we'd want to get for number 1. He's hoping that his team can draft a forward, and thus hoping we pick Dahlin

What are the chances the Sabres don’t draft Dahlin?

Serious physical injury, death or a serious Felony arrest would be the only ones that come to mind.

Unless something catastrophic happens to Dahlin between now and then......the chances are ZERO that we don't draft Dahlin.

What are the chances Dahlin gets in a catastrophic accident between now and the draft, ruining his ability to ever play hockey again? That number.

Only 3 things might keep the Sabres from drafting Dahlin.

3) He gets drunk on the summer solstice, goes for a donut run at 3:00 AM in the arctic twilight, and backs his Saab into a Timmo Hortonsson's.

2) Finnish National team extracts revenge for 2018 Olympics and/or 2018 IIHF World Championship loss to Sweden and transfuses Rasmus Dahlin's blood with Ville Leino's.

1) Serious life-threatening accident / coma, or worse, a repeat of the Len Bias tragedy. Link for those too young to remember: Len Bias was supposed to be Michael Jordan at 6'9" forward. Len Bias - Wikipedia

I know. But thinking the Sabres will pass on Dahlin in June is the same thinking that Pittsburgh would pass on Crosby back in 05. There just isn't a chance.

And unlike 2015 where The consolation prize (Eichel) is a superstar prospect in his own right, Svechnikov is simply not in the same realm as Dahlin. I'm open to moving the #1 pick, as long as I totally rip off the other team in a one sided robbery trade.

Not all drafts are created equal and this creates an issue where there is none. Getting Nail Yakupov or Ekblad/Reinhart as the 1st overall for the next 5 years hardly seems fair compared to most of the recent drafts when even the 2nd pick is far superior (Eichel, Barkov, Laine, Seguin, Hedman, Doughty, Svechnikov?). Then they will say you can't pick top 5 again and this would just further restrict teams stuck in the basement.

I think the lottery should just be abolished. You wouldn't have had Edmonton winning all those 1st overalls if there wasn't even a lottery.

but then you encourage tanking. I think the best solution is just to further restrict the lottery. Say only the last 10 teams are in it instead of 15. Keep the odds the same or scale them to 10 instead of 15 teams

If a team is tanking take their pick away. That's what the NFL would do.

I watched the ping pong ball video on nhl.com just now. The Sabres also had the first number picked for pick #3! So much luck!

Ways I can tell how the Sabres have fallen? Pix found out about the lottery from my FB feed. Like... who reads my feed for hockey? ;)

Hahhaha...well, I made a conscious decision not to watch the lottery this year. I heard they were top 3, drank a couple of beers, lost track of the time. She tells me "We're getting...Rasmoose Dallin?" That's how I found out we won.
