You're right. Let's run back 35 games of Anderson and a rotation of AHLers, or just give the keys to UPL...

Nah. Goaltending is the Buffalo's biggest need by a country mile.

I completely agree. You said trading a 1st rounder would be 100% for a goaltender. We need goaltending, badly. Of this we ALL agree.

I was just pushing back on the 100% idea. If we trade a 1st (or 2 of them), I could just as easily see a RHD coming back as a goalie.

If we draft 2nd, I would rather have the high pick. Quality over quantity with this pick. If we draft 4th though, I may trade down to 6th or so for a good asset
No way, if the Habs are picking 2nd they are selecting Logan Cooley! LC may even go 1st overall if the Coyotes (assuming they have #1) are sour on Wright.

If the Habs are picking 4th, then yeah, i can see them moving down.

Might be a draft day for one of the picks for Lundkvist (RHD) from NYR if there is a center prospect availble for NYR.

no….

buffalo isn’t trading any of their center prospects

Lundqvust isn’t all that special. Not giving up a 1st for him. He was drafted as a late 1st and has done nothing. He’s not getting back a 1st.

buffalo likely uses one of their 1st on a RD.

Buffalo needs to get to the cap floor this off season so they would be looking at some higher salaried and nhl proven than an old prospect.

next year I expect their lineup looking like

2022-23
samuelson-Dahlin
Power-Vet/Jokiharju
Bryson-vet/Jokiharju
Fitzgerald

2023 or 2024
Samuelson-Dahlin
Power-Jokiharju
Bryson/ Johnson-1st rd D/ vet

if they did not draft a RD with their 1st or one of the others then they might look at trading for one using Vegas 2nd next year.

I don't think anyone was giving Skinner 9 million and obviously, 8 years was out of the question. I am pretty sure 7.5x8 would have worked, and that extra 12 million saved over the life of the contract would be a lot better for the franchise. Even 8m x 7 would probably have gotten it done, but his cap hit is helping them hit the floor now, so it currently is not that big of a problem.

There is a pretty big disadvantage for teams like Buffalo trying to attract top end talent in free agency. They have to pay more, and even then, players will choose Toronto, New York, Boston all over them and usually sign for less money in doing so.

Skinner forced his way to Buffalo for proximity to family. They were only bidding against themselves and Toronto. Toronto had no cap space or need for another expensive forward contract so it basically was just the Sabres bidding against themselves.

Jason Botterill is a jackass.

I said this in a post 2 posts above the one you quoted (#73)

(the skinner contract was just Botts bidding against himself - I have no explanation for that one).

So I definitely agree.

A lot of analysts believed there was competition for Skinner, and that Buffalo had no choice but to make that offer, but I am with you and believe a much lesser offer would have gotten it done.

Sabres need to keep all three picks. If they wanted a goalie they should have drafted Wallstedt last year.

The issue is more so that we need a goalie NOW. Levi and Portillo are fine prospects that we need to get into the system, but we need to have a solid netminder on our roster so that our forwards and defensemen have some confidence and stability back there.

Don't get me wrong, having Wallstedt in the system would be great. But he's no different than Levi to us right now.

I wouldn't if I was Buffalo. I'd move picks for the next 2 year's 1sts or young players but there's no point moving up in this draft.

Need to take all picks to replace all the young players graduating to NHL. Rochester is gonna miss the playoffs because we called up the good AHL defenseman who turned out to also be good NHLers which is why we have been winning a lot more. I would only consider moving the fla 1st for an established goalie with term that isn’t 35+

Mattias is certainly a big rock when it comes to defending Sabres have been actually consistently hitting with their later firsts/seconds where I actually trust them to make the right picks recently.

Petry for #30 pick

Power-Petry great fit on second line on defense
Going to make a macro of this for the likely upcoming 600 posts by Habs fans trying to push Petry on the Sabres over the next few months...

Hard pass.

Buffalo needs strong goaltending and a defenseman that is exceptional in his own end, so Dahlin doesn't have to kill penalties on top of playing 25 minutes a night. Kid is exhausted and it is hurting his play.

Petry is a bad fit skillwise, a terrible fit cap and age wise, and he's super unhappy his family wants to remain in Michigan away from him, so why would he be happy in Buffalo?

Petry is a very good fit skillwise, is a reasonable cap fit. And you may have missed the part about it being an hour flight to Detroit, without a border crossing, in a town that doesn't have a history of making life difficult for players' families.

Oh, I saw them, and I just vehemently disagree.

Team needs goaltending first and foremost.

Second, bringing in RHD means you are likely replacing Fitzgerald, so they have

Dahlin
Power
Jokiharju
Bryson
Samuelsson

They need to lighten Dahlin's minutes and having him play a huge role on the PK is breaking him. He's looked exhausted in a lot of games recently, and his decision making has suffered.

They need someone to take on the tough defensive minutes and reliably PK. That is not Petry's MO. Never has been. Adding a guy with bite would also be welcome since Fitzgerald would be in the pressbox.

Petry bagged it in with his family out of town, and from all accounts, his attitude was less than stellar.

Why would be be happy in Buffalo if his family is 200 miles away(350 drive) and he can't see his wife and kids regularly? Do you want that in this lockeroom that is finally a positive environment? I sure don't.

Then there is his age. Regardless of what Habs fans say in these threads, 95% of NHL players start to break down heavily at or before 35. Most people that haven't played competitive physical sports don't understand that the bangs and bruises you take at 22, heal in a day or two. Those same bruises linger for several days in your late 20s. By 35, those bangs and bruises stick around for a week plus and the chance of reinjuring them before they heal is very common.

The 82 game season is punishing. Guys in their 30s have to ice themselves down after ever single game. It takes it's toll. Expecting anyone to play at 36 or 37 and not be slowed by the physical abuse is not realistic.

Lastly, that cap hit will be an anchor in 3 years when the Sabres will be needing cap the most. It is going to get tight quickly, and remaining as cap-flexible as they can will be important.

We are all entitled to our opinions, and we obviously disagree here, and I respect that, (I usually agree with your takes, to be honest) but I will bet money that Petry's contract will be ugly in year three, and I'd even give odds on that bet. Those contracts almost never workmout well for the team that owns them.

Dahlin's currently averaging 1:09 in SHTOI/game, putting him 7th among Sabre defensemen who've played at least 20 games. Power's drawing more than him but has only had his 6-game sample. They've kept him out of regular PK duty most of the season so to think that he's somehow being crushed by it is an odd take. Moving Fitz out of the top 6 is not necessarily a bad thing - I love his compete and physical game but he's struggled at NHL speeds.

It's possible that Petry's deal is an issue in year three, you are correct. It's also possible he's still a viable 3rd pairing defenseman at that point. We don't agree on the risk - at this point I'm more interested in done vs. perfect for the defense issue, but I'm game for other options, even another LD.
