Similar to ROR right?

Can someone help explain? Doesn't this amke a buyout more difficult?

From CapFriendly.com:
Signing Bonus
Signing bonuses are paid to the player regardless of a buyout. Therefore, as explained in the buyout caphit formula above, signing bonuses are excluded in the equation when determining the total buyout cost, and are included in the AAV value when determining the remaining caphit.

Signing bonuses therefore decrease the buyout caphit savings. In the case of players with significant signing bonuses, such as David Clarkson, the remaining caphit decreases minimally. Due to this, Clarkson's contract has been referred to as a buyout-proof contract.

So yeah, it does make it more difficult to buy-out. But, it does make it more friendly for a trade depending on how it's structured year to year.

So the idea is that we can trade him if we need to to a team that can take the cap hit and has a cheap owner that doesn't want to pay much?

Exactly. A team like arizona that needs to hit the floor but doesn't want to spend the actual money to get there.

SabresPR finally with the official press release:
BUFFALO, N.Y. (July 1, 2016) — The Buffalo Sabres today announced the team has signed forward Kyle Okposo to a seven-year contract.

In his eighth full NHL season with the New York Islanders in 2015-16, Okposo (6’0”, 217 lbs., 4/16/1988) recorded 64 points (22+42) and 51 penalty minutes. His career-high totals in assists (42) and power play points (23) each led all Islanders players in 2015-16.

Okposo has topped the 50-point mark in each of the last three seasons, including a career-best 69 points (27+42) in 2013-14. He has been among the league’s most productive players during that stretch, ranking 25th among all NHL skaters in assists (117) and points (184), and 18th in points per game (.88) since the beginning of the 2013-14 season.

In 529 total NHL games, Okposo has recorded 369 points (139+230) and 310 penalty minutes, adding 15 points (7+8) and 11 penalty minutes in 24 playoff games. The St. Paul, Minnesota native has also represented the United States at several international tournaments, including the IIHF World Championship (2009, 2010, 2012) and the IIHF World Junior Championship (2007, 2008).

Kyle is a top 25 scorer in this league, but his inconsistency is going to frustrate you at times. When he's on he's absolute fire, though. Got a great shot and rarely loses a battle against the boards. Hockey IQ could use work and not the best defensively. He's also a total Harry Potter dork

He's a great player oftentimes. You'll love him and hate him at the same time. With the offensive talent you guys have, he'll go unnoticed until he scores a hat trick.

I do think it's interesting that the last year of Okposo's deal is all salary, no signing bonus. That's the 2022-23 season, and the current CBA expires in 2022.

Do you guys plan on buying Moulson out?

As a Sens fan I've been following Buffalo's moves since TM took over. Moulson is pretty much the only bad contract you guys have.

Apparently he had promised the team he would show up in better shape this year and improve his game. Probably going to give him another season to see if he keeps his word and improves.

Looking more and more like he just wanted out of NY.

Front-loading may have had something to do with it. NYI is pretty notorious for doing the opposite with their contracts. Also could've been looking for the 8th year from NYI.

Whatever the reasons, the terms of his contract with Buf are very reasonable. The way it's structured should make it easy enough to move to a cap floor team in the later years of the deal if we need to. Happy to have him here! :handclap:

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I think Murray is on record saying Moulson is NOT a buyout candidate.

Definitely not right now. In the future? Who knows. We've talked about it.

In a dream world we could pay Vegas to take him off our hands.

No, not yet anyway. I wouldn't be surprised if the team looked at that a couple summers from now when Eichel and Reinhart are due raises, but he's safe for the time being.

It never made sense to buy Moulson out this year anyway. They don't need his cap space yet and another year off of the term makes the cap penalty go down a lot.
