I just asked my wife. She's Russian. She just chuckled. It sounds weird, too. From my experience, they're just like most other humans. Not to mention it's probably more of a culture shock for a Finn given that there aren't many large cities.
So your wife came over alone and didn't have any family or anyone else?

ChadD on wgr, he liked him in AZ, but not so much in TO, why ? He wasn't very good.

He does have good entry denial analytics.

Sounds like Hagg to me.

Surprisingly, I believe Toronto fans more than Chad in this situation. They said that Ilya was good.

Seems like a really nice fit style and handed-wise, happy to pay for that given our current cap situation. I think the Russian-speaker factor is significant with no fewer than five prospects on the horizon. Six years KHL and three MHL means he's a true Russian vet for these guys to hopefully connect with at camp, etc.

I'd also like to throw out "ferme Lyubush (la bouche)" for the first time he facewashes a rival forward in a scrum. Not a perfect pronunciation match but it's stuck in my head now.

This could wind up being a super underrated signing. What did our defense need? A veteran RHD that can play physical.

What is this guy? A veteran RHD that can play physical.

The thought of Sammy and Lyubushkin patrolling the front of the net on the PP is making me drool.

Great signing.
I have a funny feeling Lyubushkin is going to be one of my favourites next season.

To travel or to live? She's traveled alone to many countries yet never sought Russian presence or searched for a Russian community. Just as I have traveled alone without knowledge of any foreign language.

I am just looking for philosophical consistency. The idea that there needs to be a veteran presence of someone of the same culture and language speaks to 1990s era philosophy where it may have been true. Wouldn't the same be true for other countries, too?

Again, the idea seems silly

If he is what you guys are saying.. I love this signing hope he is hunting for a top four spot..
I was unsure beforehand, but everything I am reading makes it seem like he is a truly great fit. GMKA stated Ilya's ability to be paired to any type of defenseman. I like that he can be effective regardless of the playstyle of his other defenseman. Plus, the physicality is something we need.

Why would we be talking about travel? He's not coming over here for a vacation. I'd appreciate it if you could practice philosophical consistency.

First, let's squash the idea anyone thinks it is "needed". Some are saying it is a fringe benefit to have a Russian vet. It may be overstated but Russian/Eastern European players (coming directly from there, not CHL/USHL) often come over with considerably worse English skills than players from Western/Central European countries. Compare to Swedes. It is night and day looking at it in a general level. Individuals, of course, vary. So, the difference from other countries comes down to the general level of English competency and comfort speaking it conversationally.

Obviously there are translators to help with communication and tutors to help improve their English, but it is hard to argue that it wouldn't be a comfort for someone who has to live and work with people they can't speak conversationally with to have a person they can speak conversationally with.

Personally I more or less shrug my shoulder at it all. If anything it is probably cooler for these kids that there are several of them in the system together, which is equally the case for the clutch of young Swedes in the system. However, you seem to be almost offended by the suggestion it is a benefit that there is a Russian vet on the team. I don't think anyone is meaning to imply Russians are from another planet or require special consideration or anything.
