who would you have wanted if they made the playoffs and drafted at 17.
The challenge is not who I would want, but who the Sabres would have selected in that spot.

I would likely have wanted one of the two NTDP forwards. But, the Sabres still have yet to take a guy from the NTDP since Adams took over. So, I would kind of expect them to have taken Barlow, ASP, or Musty.

The gap between those three and Benson...

I see Hart as no guarantee of being that much better than UPL or Comrie. His numbers are not very impressive, though he’s playing on an awful Flyers team…but UPL and Comrie weren’t exactly playing behind the Great Wall of China.
Nothing in life is guaranteed.

But, if I had to bet a large amount of money on one of those three being the best NHL goalie over the next 3-5 years for the Sabres, I am betting on Hart and it is not even close.

It sounds like Peca would've stayed if given a roll on the bench..

As for Christy and Wilford, idk why Donny keeps them... He really wanted Girardi behind the bench after the covid season so he isn't afraid to add people outside of his circle :dunno:

My guess is he likes how the bench operates with those two and wasn't willing to boot one of them for Peca out of the gate. If Peca takes the job up top, he likely finds himself on the bench by the midway point of the season once Granato has a chance to figure out how he works within the group. Remember, Girardi ended up on the bench after Krueger was fired and Granato wanted to keep that consistency. Peca gets an immediate bench job in NYR hence why he went there.

So essentially I don't think it has anything to do with Peca vs Christy/Wilford coaching wise but rather Granato wants bench coaches he "knows" helping him run the bench.

I guess... to my knowledge (And I very well could be wrong) Christy works on Faceoffs and Wilford works PK. Sabres were bad in both categories...

Pretty sure Peca worked a lot with the Roch players on faceoffs and possibly helped with the PK down there.

Just saying adding Peca and moving on from at least Christy could've made sense.

Thinking about what a combination Sanheim & Hart trade would cost and offer for the Sabres......
I think the Sabres care more about D handedness than many think they do.

Sanheim would be the 3rd, and arguably the 4th, best LHD on the Sabres if they were to trade for him. His $6.25M cap hit is way too much for a guy that likely plays on the 3rd pairing as I can't see the Sabres going with him in the top 4 unless they are moving Samuelsson down to the 3rd pairing. And I can't see that happening, either.

OK, so what are you prepared to give up to get this guy?

His greatest characteristic is he is humble. Willing to delegate out responsibilities and listen.
I wasn't impressed by the KA hire and thought he was simply a case of the easiest and most expedient hire of a "yes man". While that may be true, KA has shown two things about what it takes to be an NHL GM -

1 - as described earlier, being humble and willing to listen and collaborate with the smarter or more experienced people already around you can go a long way. Simply being the guy to rally everyone together and not stymie their best efforts is a path to success...being a leader through empowering others rather than trying to be "the man" who decides everything.

2 - the rest of the NHL, through the years, as been full of recycled good ol' boys who really don't know much more than anyone else, aside from having cliques or specific working relations with other good ol' boys that allow them to make certain moves back and forth to help each other look good or appear successful. It takes less stature or reputation than maybe what people think, but better personal characteristics can make up for that or be more effective.

This Sabres board, with a bit more time for dedicated scouting, could be equally successful running an NHL front office (but we might need a few more accountants).

"Adams was viewed as a guy whose only qualification was that he was willing to work for the Pegulas"

Such an interesting quote.
Pegula didn’t even do a GM search when he fired Botterilll, so this quote is meaningless to me. He had already approached Adams about taking the GM job before Botterill was even fired. So it’s not like they tried to do a GM search and we’re getting turned down by candidates.

If he had said “Adams only qualification was being trusted by the Pegulas” I would mostly agree. Terry made it clear he wanted someone he knew and trusted in the GM job.

PDOcast was talking about their favorite team again on the part 2 of their offseason takeaways podcast

Said Power would benefit so much from a good regular partner. And they both are Clifton guys so they think it’ll happen this year.

Mentioned how they haven’t done anything in net yet and think they may be trying to wait out the market and see if anything falls into their lap.

Every time they come up it’s clear that PDOcast loves everything this organization does under Adams…except the goalie madness and they can not convince themselves they won’t do something in net.

But they are impressed by how many ways the team has given itself to improve in the future. I wonder how long until they start to call out how rarely they take advantage of that

Who knows if Hart will be an option?

But, acting like he's not much better than UPL or Comrie is not being reasonable, IMO.

Is Hart better than UPL or Comrie. Yep.

Is Hart "much" better than UPL or Comrie? I'm not so sure. There was a point in time where I would whole-heartedly agree and say that we'd be dumb not to get him if he was available. But now? I'm really not sure he's "much" better than UPL or Comrie.

And I certainly don't think his play justifies his rumored price tag.

I am sure that Hart is much better than UPL or Comrie.

This is how I know: if Devon Levi were the one that had Achilles surgery, I would have a lot more faith if Hart were on the roster than I would be right now with UPL and Comrie here.

The price tag and what it would realistically take to get him is the big question.

Hart is definitely a more proven goalie than UPL and Comrie and I think he's definitely better than them. I will easily take Dahlin, Power, Samuelsson and even Joki than Risto, Sanheim (I think it was a bad season), DeAngelo and Provorov. I'm tired of repeating it, but Anderson did a much better job for me than UPL and Comrie.

well you keep repeating it, yet continually refuse to acknowledge that it took CA all the energy and focus he could muster to start 1 game a week. How would he have fared if he played more often?

Why can’t you answer my question? I answered yours. If we don’t even know he’s an option or not you seem to be concerned about my opinion of him. Under your “we don’t even know if he’s an option or not” theory we shouldn’t be discussing players under contracts for other teams.

At his age, this is very good, considering that the recovery takes longer.

Although I am now watching his Game Logs last season and there are segments with games one after another where he showed good stats.

The people who expressed that opinion are still complaining about him and claiming that ownership is cheap, etc etc etc
Ehh, there were definitely some level headed posters who have since changed their minds who initially expressed a good deal of skepticism over the hire.
