Not sure what you mean there.

Just read Patricks Wiki page. He has had some very good results and made some very bad trades, including one that has been tabbed the wortst in NHL history. Marcus Naslund to Vancouver for a guys who scored two goals.

Ultimately, with Pittsburgh cash strapped, he was forced to trae Jagr and the team flamed. His contract with Pitt was not renewed by ...... Ken Sawyer. There is our connection.

Sherpa in the sense that he has more experience than Murray at being GM, that's all. Tenzing Norgay, a Sherpa, helped Sir Edmund Hillary climb Mount Everest.

He's there to assist, that's all I meant.

You have to look at the time it was done though. Pittsburgh was in ruins and trading everything for cash.

Anyone have a quick summation of events? (excluding that the 'professionals' at TBN continued to be 'professionals' see:idiots)

RE: Craig Patrick

I was thinking the same thing. But Patrick just stated on WGR that he has talked to Pat over the years.

Tim Murray announced as GM.
Craig Patrick as Special Assistant / Adviser to Hockey Ops.
TM hasn't discussed scouting stuff yet, just philosophy.
Will talk to Kevin Devine to go over draft stuff.
Called himself somewhat aggressive.
Willing to trade anyone, since team is in last.
Ted Nolan is the coach right now, wants to get to know him first.

Murray spoke twice about needing to get together with Devine to go over things. Its not much but seems to show he has respect for Devine and what he can do.

"After 17 years as Penguins General Manager, Patrick was relieved of his duties on April 20, 2006, when his expiring contract was not renewed by team president Ken Sawyer" (Wiki)

Interesting. Ken Sawyer is currently Senior Advisor/Alternate Governor for the Sabres.
As mentioned, Craig Patrick made a lot of mistakes and wasn't always...on top of things as a GM, but he also has a ton of experience and is very knowledgeable. He's an excellent choice for an adviser role IMO.

Tim is MUCH more animate on WGR.

Made a comment about reading someone on twitter saying "He's the nephew of Bryan Murray, I hate him."

"I was pissed at you, for sure!", Murray to Andrew Peters regarding fighting his goalie (Emery).

Really liked everything he had to say. Given his immediate reaction to the dumb questions the reporters know he can't really answer, we should be in for some good Murray soundbites over the years. Bringing in a guy like Craig Patrick is the type of move we didn't know Patty had in him, but his experience should be very beneficial.

Glad that the process is over and we finally know who has the keys to the franchise during this ridiculously important time.

@WGR550

#Sabres GM Tim Murray on his financial philosophy "If you're a good team you have to spend to the cap."

Does this not kind of confirm why Tim left Ottawa? I mean, the opportunity to get any GM job is obviously huge, but he seemed clearly in line to get the Sens GM job once his uncle retired. Really wonder if the prospect of Melynk as his owner wasn't the most enticing thing. There's the internal cap, and I know a lot of Sens fans who have nothing but negative things to say about the guy.

Murray says on WGR - "You have to spend to the cap." Adds on, "..you can't do it for no reason and there isn't reason to do so right now."

Interesting, first time I've heard an executive talk about the players in the locker room knowing whether you have given them (the team) a chance to win.

My guess is he feels awkward in front of a camera. Lot of people like that. Much easier to talk via radio, more personal, less in your face

What happened for those of us that missed the pc?
Sullivan asked if Murray had any specific coaching candidates in mind (it was a setup for a negative answer in that it would clearly disparage Nolan), and Murray recognized it for what it was and specifically stated he wanted to keep the PC positive and not go down a negative road. I'm paraphrasing. From memory. Not a gifted memory.

Perhaps he'll keep Ott. I like that quote.
