Murray has to know he's probably gone after next season if the team doesn't make the playoffs. I expect some very aggressive moves this summer. We'll see if they work out.

That's what would scare me the most, though. We saw that with the Bills' Sammy Watkins trade. While a fantastic player, the value was too low for what they gave up.

If that is the idea the Pegulas have to step in if they don't like the long term implications. The problem goes away for Murray if he's fired, but not the Pegulas.

With that said, this team does need a major shake up. It is quite obvious that the defense is nowhere near where it should be. We can blame coaches, the players and / or the system, but it really comes down to one thing: they're not good enough.

Murray overestimated the ability of Kulikov, Bogosian and Gorges. Did injuries have a part? Absolutely. Was Gorges brought in for leadership as well? Yeah. But overall outside of Risto and McCabe this defense is horrific. That goes 100% onto Murray.

He traded away picks and Zadorov, which left the Sabres with no defensive prospects aside from Guhle. This team has 2 legitimate NHL quality defenseman and maybe one D prospect (Guhle) that can step into the NHL next year.

The Sabres have fantastic top end talent in Eichel, Reinhart, ROR, Okposo, Kane and Risto. So we have the tools now we just need the toolbox. Getting some depth players to fill out the bottom six and to acquire 2-3 defenseman is possible. The easy work was done by acquiring Eichel -- now the hard work must be done to get that value depth that we see the good teams have. That's what makes a GM good - look at Bowman and the Blackhawks. They're consistently drafting and signing players that seemingly come out of nowhere and contribute quality minutes.

This off season will really tell if Murray has the magic touch to acquire value depth.

Tl;Dr The Pegulas shouldn't allow Murray to mortgage the future-- they have a long term vision, don't let Murray give it away to keep his job.

Poll: Will Bylsma get fired?

I'm willing to give Murray one more offseason to right the ship, Bylsma ? Not a chance, Every Buffalo Sabres fan or majority of us fans want him gone, and the way we have been playing all season . Lack of Hustle, out coached , out played, out shot, the team unorganized, no identity, shall I continue ? I'm voting he will get canned unless we have some miracle turnaround and make the playoffs which every fan knows isn't going to happen

The Pegulas directly interfering with management is the absolute last thing I want.

Sorry but I still think that's how we wound up with Rex & Bylsma in the first place. Unless they are giving approval to fire Disco, keep them out.

I don't like the idea of a team sabotaging a coach to get him fired, it's extortion. Give in now and they'll do it again if they don't like the next guy. Obviously, it isn't the entire team but most of them really do not matter.

Goalies defended him but are replaced with a waiver claim, most of the defenders are/were just happy to be in the NHL. Bottom 6 grinders don't complain about coaches, vets over 30 don't complain about coaches. Kane has no opportunity to complain (due to other stuff).

Jack, ROR, Sam, Okposo, Risto. Only guys that matter right now, only Jack benefits from a wide open game from a roster built to dump & chase, really just exposes the AHL defense, the lack of speed and abandons the goalie.

No way Jack gets traded, so Bylsma is probably gone before the draft.

The way I interpreted GMTM's presser the other day, it's the players who need to improve. I don't believe he thinks DB is at all responsible for their poor play, and don't believe he'll be fired this season, or in the off-season. He'll likely coach next season, until something catastrophic happens. Time will tell of course, but I just don't see DB getting fired for a long time. I hope to heck we move some deadwood off this team over the summer, but I don't think we'll be that much better, unless some yuge moves are made. I just don't see it happening.

Murray and Bylsma both need to be relieved of their duties.

If the Sabres fire Bylsma and are in the same boat next season, I guess they then fire Murray, hire a new GM who will then want his own guy at HC?

Nope, do the right thing and fire both of these guys at the end of the season.

Never liked Murray from day 1. Swagger fooled a lot of people here never fooled me. This defence is a disgrace traded away a 1st with great prospects available in Lehner who does not look like the future. We were stacked with picks and prospects now this team is a mess.

They both need to go.

Bylsma will eventually get fired. I just doubt it is this offseason.

And I don't foresee Murray getting let go after one season where the rebuild isn't on the schedule that people wanted.

Rebuilds never follow a specific timeline.

Just look at the Blackhawks. They took off after their owner passed away and his son took over.

Murray is the one expecting the playoffs. His rebuild his failure according to him not the people.

I don't care about the blackhawks I care about what our GM says and then what happens on the ice. If they are two different things he messed up.

Exactly. Makes no sense to fire Bylsma and hire a new coach while Murray is still the GM. Replace Murray first, then let the new GM replace Bylsma.

Patience is key in life.

Throwing out the GM because the team didn't make the jump from where they were last year to the playoffs this year is impatient and doesn't lend itself to the type of stability that model franchises have.

Impatience from who? The fans or the GM? This would have been the last year on Nolan's contact.

Personally, I think people are being impatient with conversations about the GM's job security.

If the defense is still a mess next year and they are in basically in the same spot as they are now, then it would be time to question whether Murray should stay.

But, that's just me.

Bylsma is likely going to get the ax in the offseason. I would be surprised if he didn't.
Murray, i am not sure why there is so much murray hate. If you are looking at the fact that he hired Bylsma in a vacuum, then yes that's pretty damning. Other than that, what other reasoning is there to can Murray?
