Well...

They need playoff experience.

Penguins said everyone but 87 is on the table.

Their biggest need is a 2C.

Penguins top trade chip won multiple cups as the league's best 2C.

They have a lot of young trade value.

Penguins want young prospects and draft picks.

Malkin....

Thompson is not a 1C on a playoff team, he's far too inconsistent.
Cozens had one season where he played like a 2C. This season he has been atrocious.
Dahlin is the only defenseman they have who could be considered a Top 4 guy, and he is a disaster when the other team has the puck.
Luukonnen has a .903 SV%

I've said it many, many times. If Buffalo's players were as good as they're said to be, then the team would actually win games.
I think Thompson can be a 1C on a playoff team, but there'd have to be a really good supporting cast around him. That's clearly not the case in Buffalo. You're on point with Cozens, Buffalo really should have moved him and kept Mittelstadt.
I do think that's a really inaccurate representation of what Dahlin is, He's a hell of a lot more than a "top 4 guy who's a disaster when the other team has the puck". He's a legitimate #1D and frankly he's become pretty decent in his own zone. The terrible in his own zone narrative has stuck with Dahlin from his earlier seasons. Buffalo would consistently be in the running for the worst team in the league without him. Luukonen may not have a long established track record, but he was good for Buffalo last year, he kept them in a lot of games. Honestly I don't see this huge hype train for most of the guys you've highlighted (outside of Dahlin). If anything I think Buffalo's key players have been consistently underrated and we've seen this as these guys go to contenders and flourish.

I've watched several periods of Buffalo hockey this year, and Dahlin looks as inept as ever. Can't handle the forecheck, sloppy turnovers/lost battles in his own zone, chasing the puck until he's 15 feet out of position, and (most importantly imo) leaving his teammates out to dry by making terrible pinches and not backchecking.

His offensive tools are indisputable. But somebody who makes that many egregious mistakes every game doesn't play 20+ minutes on a legit Cup contender.

I can watch several periods and see every defenseman in the league make the same mistakes. 😁

That would legitimately shock me. He's had a few rough games, but overall looks like a world's better player than he did last season. His level of calm on the attack is shocking for such a young player. Moving OP would take a massive return.
Not sure either team does this, but something around Power for Lafreniere.

Back to back first overall picks. Similar ages and contracts, trading from positions of strength for positions of need. Laf is my favorite player on the Rangers but this probably makes them a better team.

Maybe each team adds a little to balance it out. Rangers throw in Lindgren and Buffalo sends another forward back.

I'd encourage you to watch more. Dahlin will never be mistaken for one of the better shutdown guys in the league, but he's become serviceable defensively and given what he can also do offensively it makes him immensely valuable. He could absolutely be a guy who plays 20+ minutes a night on a cup contender, your assertion that he's some sort of weak link is laughable.

If Malkin would even go to Buffalo, what do you trade for a 38 year old who's still playing good hockey?

And that's kind of the problem. A guy like Andersson is theoretically a very good fit for Buffalo........but his style is wholly redundant given that we have Dahlin, Power and Byram.

Not that the whole redundancy idea stopped Adams from trading for Byram when we already had Dahlin and Power.........
Probably never happening but if zub was available and willing to come to Buffalo, what would you offer?

I can't even imagine. I imagine it would have to be based around draft picks though. Maybe a first and Noah Ostlund for Malkin retained? It's a high, high price but Malkin is quite unique.

Ih there's no doubt he's a unique player. And maybe Buffalo would pull the trigger. It's just very tricky and risky when a guy is pushing 40.

Maybe you saw it in the first 6-7 games of the season when he was playing with an injury and didn't look so good? After that he played much better, although we have problems in defense, because the defense is made up of only more offensive D and often there is complete chaos.

Dahlin and Thompson are our best players, but our GM hasn't done a very good job each offseason, leaving holes in the roster and relying on kids to grow.

Connor Murphy is your guy...
Yes, he would be interesting.

Byram + for Rasmus Andersson?

Gives Calgary a young D man with a lot of potential, gives Buffalo a solid top 4 RD.

I also wonder if they move on from Cozens. He’s been pretty bad and he has a big contract but it’s also pretty early to give up on a player. They really shouldn’t have moved Mittelstadt

If anything Cozens has had a decent Novembers so far I don't think they are giving him the boot for a bad opening month where he led the team in shots.

We don’t need retention - and Noah ostlund is not in that trade
