In theory, it’s supposed to have the trailer have a full head of steam and pushes all 4 defenders back. It fails when you make like 19 back passes before hitting the blue line.

To my eye the Sabres have generated the same amount of chances as the Islanders (that is to say, not that many). Their goalie has made the saves has been the difference.
