So, by this logic, every player who has a bad year should be kept because maybe they will be better next year?

Kesselring was always a project player. he was a bottom pair d-man in Utah who played well in some spot duty due to injuries. Some underlying numbers suggested he could be more.

He wasn't here. He's behind Dahlin, Byram, Power, Samuellson, and Timmins on the depth chart (and probably Metsa)

Adams took a shot that he'd be their #4 and samuelsson could anchor the bottom pair. Samuelsson had a great year and pushed Byram/Power down to the #4. Kesselring had some bad luck. Sometimes players simply don't work for teams beyond the players or the teams control.

Glad to get back some value.
They didn't get any value, that's the problem.

"The Sabres’ internal draft value chart values moving up from 27 to 20 as a mid-second-round pick."

Wow, what a massive bargain for SJS if Kesselring comes even remotely close to bouncing back

Not a fan of the trade value for us though, big young RHD that can skate are usually a valuable asset
I agree. Now if he had acquired SJS 2nd place pick instead of their 20th, that would've been a win.

Kesselring was awful, he still should have been playing in the playoffs though. He was better than Stanley and Timmons. Peterka for Kesselring, as it was sold at the time, was an awful awful trade. Thank god the trade actually ended up being Peterka for Doan.

Nothing like trading an asset that has potential at its lowest possible value.

I can only guess it was a personality clash then and wasn't wanted on the team.
when does it get better?

after you sign byrum and kesselring is an upset depressed asset

or at the tdl hoping hes healthy and hasnt spent all year in the dog house?

but as a Kess fan Im pretty low on the return, especially considering im hoping they dont use the pick anyway

Don't like selling low on Kesselring. Would've much rather just kept him at/near his QO for a year to see if he bounced back, then sold off other pieces to create cap space.

Nor do I like the value coming back. If we were really hellbent on moving Kesselring for some reason (which, again, we shouldn't have been), there were likely better offers than this. I don't really see any delta between the 20th and 27th picks.

It doesn't feel like a move before a move for me.

I don't think they will trade their 1st round draft pick.
Why, you don't think Jarmo (a guy who made 30+ trades in Cbus) is showing his hand this early ? I hope he is not being that naive .

If Ruff had told Jarmo "I'm not playing him" or had zero confidence than Kess could play the way he wanted.......Jarmo pretty much had to move him.

We're entering a season where every dollar is going to matter. If Ruff thinks that Metsa or Johnson as the 3rd pairing guy next to Timmins would play as good or better than Kesselring.....save the $1M and trade Kesselring.

I just don't see why we make the move NOW. This feels like a move that could (should?) be made closer to the draft.

Him being a UFA next summer would've been the issue. I understand the move that instead of trying to rehabilitate his value just move him now and not having it out there all season to lose him next year.

It gets better when you play him.

I mean, they have until the 29th of June to make their QO's. This deal seems like it would've been there on draft day.

Cant say that maybe they get someone like lane hutson instead of a rosen at 20 compared at 27 so it could be massive difference
would should maybe possible it makes no difference from 20 to 27 finding a hidden gem

playing fantasy doesn't make it so.

You bring up Lane Hutson and he was picked 62.

They didn't get any value, that's the problem.

His value today -- forget what it was a year ago -- is one year of team control and that's it. We don't know what he gets at arbitration and based on what's happen last year I don't see him signing even a two-year deal let alone longer. So what are you trading? Not much. They got the equivalent of a second.
