Obviously, but how often do you see players go on IR with ambiguous injuries? All the time.

What's stopping Chicago doing the same with Hossa or Florida with Luongo?

The Cap-recapture was put in place for a reason and this seems like a serious loophole that should be closed.

So an organization should suffer with the cap because a player sustains a career ending injury? Talk about a double whammy, especially if the player has significant tenure left on his contract. Forcing a player into retirement also cuts off their benefits (health care that they likely need) and paycheck (in a league where contracts are guaranteed) - also a double whammy. No one comes out even remotely close to "good" in that scenario.

Removing the ability for a team to put a player who has likely sustained career ending injuries on LTIR is ludicrous. It's not like the player is ever coming back. If the player does come back it's not as if the team will have some sort of extra leverage / tap into the unused cap money built up over the years, after the fact.

It would be insanely irresponsible to let him back on the ice.

In fact, he should have never been cleared to play this season.

Yeah , it's really a shame. Healthly Clowe was a beast but is damaged goods and has been a while now.
Atleast he was fortunate enough to sign his big UFA contract before Lou also figured it out. He came quite close to missing out a huge pile of money.

Love Clowe, yes his contract is expensive but the guy was still contributing and playing well for us during the short stints he was healthy.

With that said, it would be extremely irresponsible for him to continue his career after this many severe concussions, i would be absolutely shocked if his doctors ever cleared him to play in the NHL again. His health and long term well being is far more important than playing hockey, plus i have no doubts that Lou would find him a role within the organization if he still wants to be around the game in some capacity.

I love Clowe as a player, but i sincerely hope i never see him step foot on the ice as an NHL player ever again, it's just asking for trouble given the issues he's had. It's clear he can't play without being at risk of yet another severe concussion, it would be unforgivable to let that happen to him after what has already occured. Don't even take the chance.

Bummer, hate to see guys go out with concussion issues...I think even physical issues like knees would be easier to stomach for the rest of your life than brain trauma. At this point hope he just lives a normal life, he would never be as effective a player as he was if he can't get his nose dirty. Still a hell of a career regardless, hope the best for him.

I think everyone knew he was a pretty good player when healthy, but everyone also knew he had huge problem staying healthy

Well sure, but I figured it was a byproduct of him crashing the net and making space for the SJ big guns.

What I meant was his finesse and vision impressed me, I thought he was just a top-notch banger and his hockey smarts really took me by surprise.

Okay.

He always worked the boards well. Also had good vision and smarts.

So sad to see him go out like this. He was a HUGE fan favorite here in SJ while he was here, and a great player for us. Like someone else said, much as I love(d) him as a player, I hope he never sets foot on the ice again. I am sure there's more than one front office that would be happy to hire him in some capacity, and I think that's what he needs to focus on now, once his time span on LTIR is over.
