Shame to see him go like this, guy was such a good player early in his career. Still he should retire if he's getting injured that much.

Sad. I think after the 2nd concussion on the Devils, it was a question of when, not if they would end his career.

Really fun player to watch play.

Keep in mind that if you fully allow for healing after a concussion (let's say 5-8 weeks) then the subsequent concussions shouldn't be as bad. However that does not seem to be the case now. I don't particularly recall that he rushed himself back much either. Could be that he had a ton of concussions before and try to play through them...

Wait, you're serious about this? What have you ever read, in your entire life (besides The Onion) that would tell you subsequent concussions would be milder than the initial. Concussions are almost ALWAYS worse after an initial one.

Closest thing to Owen Nolan the Sharks have had since the beloved captain was traded away.

Always sad to see a fan favorite held back by injuries, especially something like concussions.

Hopefully he has enough in the bank that he can retire, because 4 concussions in 18 months is brutal.

Will always associate him with one of the best HF user names: 'Ye Olde Ryane Clowe'

End of the road for Clowe ?

Poor guy is tough as nails and he's fought through so much but it appears it's over.

If he wants it I'm sure there is a job waiting for him in the organization.

Lou Lamoriello: Ryane Clowe is out for rest of this season. Don't know yet if he'll be able to play next season

He is traveling with the team now though.

Lamoriello said it was his idea for Clowe to come on the trip and be around the players

Clowe is was a very effective player when he first signed in NJ. Was playing at a 50 point pace and gave us a strong physical element. I was very impressed with his passing and playmaking skills, which I weren't expecting from a player like him.

It's a real shame. Seems like a really nice dude, but the concussions were just too much. He needs to make the best decision for him and his family, and I'm sure Lou is willing to accommodate him.

I feel sorry for him and sympathize with his situation. He seems like a good guy and he was a strong player for us when he wasn't injured, but with his concussion history, he understandably has to consider his long-term health when making the decision to play again. I just hope he makes whatever choice is best for him and his family.

When healthy he can still be a very productive player. But as a fellow human being I hope he just goes on LTIR for the next three years so he can stay healthy.

I mean, everyone saw this coming when the Devils inked him to that deal.

Still sucks for him personally. If he retires, is there a cap penalty against the devils?

He had 3 seasons in a row with 30-plus assists with the Sharks.

He wouldn't retire. He would just remain on LTIR.

He wont retire. We will just put him on LTIR so there is no cap penalty

For how many years? Sounds like a serious loophole.

Is Hossa going on LTIR in a few years too? :shakehead

Also when each season begins, no one can be on the IR just yet so wouldn't they take some sort of hit or at least have to have a much lower salary than the cap to remain compliant when the season starts?

Well Hossa hasn't suffered any sort of career threatening/ending injury so...no?

Obviously, but how often do you see players go on IR with ambiguous injuries? All the time.

What's stopping Chicago doing the same with Hossa or Florida with Luongo?

The Cap-recapture was put in place for a reason and this seems like a serious loophole that should be closed.

Well sure, but I figured it was a byproduct of him crashing the net and making space for the SJ big guns.

What I meant was his finesse and vision impressed me, I thought he was just a top-notch banger and his hockey smarts really took me by surprise.
