Again with these wrong side of 30 comments. Clowe and Richards are still young men. Wrong side of 30 is Iginla, Alfredsson, Kiprusoff, Hejduk. Clowe is a big guy who is slow, so he plays a grinding game and has soft hands to boot. He's worth $4-4.8 on the open market, especially if an albatross like Richards is getting a 6.666667 cap hit. Lets see what he does in the playoffs for us before we decide on a number. We just gave up 3 picks for him, why would we be in a hurry to get rid of him?

They are not young men. I understand trying to look at the positives, but those are facts. He is indeed on the wrong side of 30. His game has been declining. Drury's game disappeared. Clowe plays a physically exhausting game just like Drury did. He has been battling an injury all year. Clowe wants a multi-year contract, originally at a high cap hit. I'm not saying I don't want to keep him but you better be careful in what you decide to pay him because you have other players to pay in the salary cap world. And you can't compare what he should get to what Richards makes. In essence you're saying since richards makes that money clowe should be paid handsomely as well. No, sorry that is not how business works. The Richards contract was a bad one. He will more likely than not be an amnesty buyout in 2014. I would think Clowe doesn't want to sign a contract only to be amnestied the next off season.

That was not the point and you know it. We were discussing Clowe's flaws. I was bringing perspective into it. If Stepan were to do that, I wouldn't be discussing that play because Stepan hasn't been relatively productive all year. Clowe has not stood out much since coming here. Played well in his first couple games vs Pittsburgh. But he has looked even slower than his usual self. I'm not even discussing that from an offensive standpoint. I'm looking at it in the sense that he is too slow to get in and finish a check; by the time he's there it'd be a late hit and/or the play is gone already. That is just not efficient for the type of player he is and what you expect. Yeah he did a good job on the play against Florida to get that goal. But my point was you can't look at that play to determine his overall play.

Again, what I was saying was you can't look at that play/shift, point to that and tell me yeah he is playing well and effectively...because he is not. I've seen Clowe play over the years. He's better than that. I think we gave up a lot for the player he IS right NOW. SJ fans will disagree. Three draft picks in rounds 2-3 is a lot. Especially for this organization which has had recent success in those rounds. Clowe is a 3rd liner, if you can't see that I'm sorry. Again, on the wrong side of 30, getting slower, and less effective in his all around game. He should get $3 million per year. He can still fight and play a smash mouth game but you don't pay those players north of $3.5 million.

14-15 million for 4 years is as far as I would go both $ and contract wise. But that is not going to be enough. No way. So either we pony up and suffer later or we paid an awful lot draft wise for a rental. Not sure if I like this at all. Let us see if we make the postseason first and how things go there - then it will be a bit easier to assess. Not really liking the trade so far, but things could change here...

I hate this trade. I think it sucks. People complained so much about Gaborik but at least he can score 40 goals. He was having an off season in what I really believe is an awful offensive system under Torts. And I just pray people aren't so blind and naive that they refer to these past two games as to why Torts is such a phenomenal offensive coach. A lot of puck luck tonight in Buffalo. A win is a win, but the reality is it was against a Buffalo team that has had a poor season, a coaching change, and had pucks going in off defenders. Miller gift wrapped a goal for Clowe at the end of the 1st.

$3.5 million for 4 years is the most I'm willing to pay him. If that's not enough than you cut your losses and move on. I don't see him being a 30 goal scorer for this team. I don't see him being a 25 goal scorer. I see POSSIBLY 20 goals and 25-30 assists. POSSIBLY. I'd rather have had Prust at $2.5 million and spend $3-4 million on someone else in free agency than to have Clowe at $4-4.5 million.

Pretty much agree with all them letters you put together there...

Nothing personal against Clowe, or lack of knowledge of what he can contribute, but there is no reason for the Rangers to step into a mistake by signing him for what I hear he will be seeking.

I agree, the Rangers need to be conservative, and realistic. Draw a line, and stick with it. Clowe is not a player to wrap significant dollars up in for a long term.

Timmy G. (Clovis, CA)

So how likely is it that Clowe resigns with the Rangers? As a Sharks fan, I'm happy to see how well he's doing there and he fits the Rangers jersey quite well.

Katie Strang (3:18 PM)

Think they definitely like him and will explore re-signing him but it will likely depend on his asking price. Sounds like he was seeking a multi-year deal with significant AAV when there was some preliminary discussion about this near the deadline. Likely depends on some other players the Rangers need to lock up long-term this summer

I like Clowe a lot. His heart is in the right place as is his attitude.

I don't want him back unless he takes a super team friendly deal.

8 points in 10 games. He has fit in well. I hope he is brought back. I think he adds a dimension this team lacks and I think his locker room presence is a positive as well.

I think people are looking at a big, tough player and expecting him to skate and move like a 5'10 Callahan. Just not realistic. If he did, then he would be a superstar in the NHL most likely.

I like his physical side but his 3 goals (most of his points) came against pretty shaky goaltending so I take them with a grain of salt. He is good inside the blueline but slow as heck everywhere else.

3 years would be my max number of years offerred.
3-4 mill a year would be my max salary offer. Even that may end up as too much.

3 years 11 mill deal.

Clowe's 3 goals:

Ryan Miller: .912 save % 2.89 GAA

Marc Andre Fleury: .917 save % 2.32 GAA

Zuccarello's 3 goals:

Steve Mason: .908 save % 2.72 GAA

Scott Clemmensen: .874 save % 3.67 GAA

Production is production.

He'd be Rick Nash

Clowe would be another Milan Lucic if he was alot quicker... Nash doesnt bring the grit aggresiveness or toughness that Clowe brings...imagine if Nash had an actual mean streak in him...

I would love to re-sign Ryane Clowe....4 years ago. Hes still a good player along the wall, he still has nice hands and playmaking ability for a big guy, but hes breaking down. Whats he going to look like in 3, 4, 5 years?

The Rangers will be making a huge mistake if this give this guy anything more than 3 years - even thats pushing it in my book.

If I said weak goaltenders not shaky goaltending that would make sense but these good goaltenders could not stop a beach ball on those nights. They had really poor games aka shaky goaltending.

I'm reserving judgement till I see him in the post-season. The story is that he's a good player who grows fur and fangs and becomes a total beast in the playoffs. I'm eager to see if it's true.

I'm hoping he plays great in the playoffs. I just want to make sure we pay a fair price if he is resigned. I do not want to over pay him just because we invested 3 draft picks in the trade.

the 3rd pick is conditional upon resigning him. if we don't, they only get 2 picks

I actually heard it is 3 picks no matter what. It could be a 5th round pick if he leaves. It could be a 2nd round pick if he resigns or we go deep in the playoffs.

Ryane Clowe to Rangers for NYR 2013 2nd, FLA 2013 3rd, Conditional 2nd 2014.

2nd is if we resign or win 2 rounds. 5th if don't.

You're right.
