Confirmed with Link: Ryan McLeod & Ty Tullio traded to Buffalo for Matthew Savoie

I feel like you are not evaluating this trade, but evaluating Adams entire offseason and calling this a bad trade because of it.

A bad team can still make a good trade…

Do you think they would be a better team without McLeod? or with Savoie in the lineup instead of McLeod? (and another gaping hole at C)

I am not an Adams fan at all, but McLeod has been really good for Buffalo. He’s been a good fit and has made a good impact on the ice.

The Sabres were never 1 trade away from the playoffs.

Basing a single trade on whether it pushed the Sabres into a playoff position, or improved their position in the standings doesn’t seem like a good way to evaluate trades. There is a LOT more that goes into overall team results than 1 trade. By that standard, the Eichel trade was bad for Vegas because they got worse his first year there and missed the playoffs for the first time ever. (when reality is that it was a home-run trade for Vegas)

McLeod certainly isn’t the reason the Sabres got worse. That would be on Adams overall roster construction, the coaching and all the struggling players on the roster (which McLeod isn’t one of). The problem this offseason wasn’t the McLeod trade. It was everything else.

IMO, you need to evaluate a trade by the impact each player has on their new team over the years they spend with that new team.

Now, if this was a deadline deal for a UFA to be, meant to help Buffalo get into the playoffs or something like that, then yeah you could evaluate it by their impact on the standings post deadline.

To say we don't need a top 4 defender who is physical and will stand up for teammates is weird but maybe you didn't know the trade was offered 3 years ago. Go look at the roster in 22-23. The defense was awful. We had Stillman, Fitzgerald, Lyubushkin, Joker, Clague, Pilut. Two of those were playing in the top 4 with Power and Dahlin. Defense is exactly what this team needed and still needs.

Also Chychrun had 6 years of NHL hockey under his belt. He could have helped mentor Power and Dahlin. I am not saying Chychrun is the answer but Adams should have been focused on defense in the off season and not the bottom 6.

McLeod is a good player and it was a good deal now. What's the point in remembering what happened three years ago and what Adams did and didn't do. Yeah, Chychrun is a good defenseman, although he's literally the same as Byram, he's a lefty PMD, not a defensive guy, even with the Caps his weakness is defense. When we have Dahlin and Power I'd rather have two defensive guys next to them in the top 4.

This is what you wrote. I don't get how you can even make this statement. Its like you don't even read my posts. I said trade Savoie for a top 4 defender even if you have to add and you come back with this. This is crap that you try to pigeonhole me into a scenario. I literally said it was poor asset management and we should have used Savoie to get defense and you post this.

Why have a conversation if can't be bothered to read my posts?
 
Start of the thread is people mad about what they gave up to get him…end of the thread people are mad he had a good year.

The way I look at it, the Sabres traded to fill a hole at 3c. McLeod has met expectations at 3c. When his shooting % starts to trail off, well yeah that's who he is/was. When It flatlines I'll blame the inept coaching staff.

He still would have matched his career high in points thus far with almost 20 games in the season still play. He’s done a lot of work we hoped as fans. As for Matt, it remains to be seen, but getting a look on her right wing with Drai a few weeks back is portents of good things to come for him. I’m sure this trade will go back-and-forth in terms of value because that’s how these things almost always go. Buffalo has gotten use out of McLeod and the Oilers are going to get use out of Savoie.

I ignored it because I don’t see how a trade that happened years ago is relevant to the discussion.
The trade you mentioned (of Chychrun from Arizona to Ottawa) happened years ago. It wasn’t an option this offseason. And Savoie was only in his first season post draft at that time. The Sabres also didn’t have Benson yet. It’s understandable why they didn’t want to move Savoie back then.
Were you actually advocating for the Sabres to trade Savoie for Chychrun back then?
And say we did acquire him, do you think chychrun’s impact would have been that much better than Byram’s has been?


What top 4 defenseman did you want that was traded this offseason? I don’t remember any good d men being traded.

Also, What about all the other stuff I said that is very relevant to the McLeod trade discussion?

Edit - wanted to say that I do think the Sabres need at least one top 4 RH defensive defenseman though.

Jensen was traded for Chychrun so I don’t see that one as realistic.

Kovacevic was traded for a 5th. Nobody would’ve been happy if the Sabres traded Savoie for him.

Marino was traded for pick #49, so the Sabres could have made that trade while still trading Savoie for McLeod. Though I’m not sure New Jersey trades him to Buffalo for a 2nd. They sent him out west. But maybe the devils would have had interest in Savoie for Marino?
At least this one is realistic to discuss.

I am not arguing the Sabres don’t need to improve the defense. All I’m saying is the McLeod trade has benefitted the Sabres so far this season.

No I meant which top 4 RDs were traded in the offseason, I didn't even mean Savoie and McLeod trade. There were defensemen who were good for us and Adams did nothing.

Yeap, then there were also the trades of Carrier and Borgen, but I was talking about the offseason, in any case there were options, but Kevyn did nothing, again.
