Player Discussion Ryan Lindgren

It’s not crazy, they’d be silly to do it. If they do then the team has learned nothing from Girardi and Staal.

Thanks for time guys, we’ll let someone else pay you your retirement contract where you’re bound to break down

Except his current contract ends when he’s 26, not 30+ like Staal/Girardi. You don’t want to give him his retirement contract, that’s fine. The kid isn’t going to be broke down garbage 2 years from now. People keep talking about Lindgren like he’s got one year left in the tank before he’s all but spent. He’s f***ing 24. He probably hasn’t even peaked yet. He’ll play this style effectively until he’s around 30 and then play another 3-5 years on 1/2 year cheaper contracts as a renowned veteran, warrior guy for the bottom pairing either here, or bouncing around for his final years.

Heart and soul player that is a microcosm of this entire team. They're a never say die resilient bunch that is a pain in the ass to play against.

This isn't a popular opinion but Rick Nash was a damn good player for the Rangers, but man oh man I couldn't begin to imagine he would be that good of a trade piece.

My favorite player on this team. You win championships with players like him, and I've always stresssed he is a perfect captain candidate.

Im so happy I have his signed game used stick. Special player.

Dude is f***ing nails. Absolute warrior that's obviously playing through a ton of injuries and still managing to give us quality top-4 minutes

The UFA market is insane. You never know. I could certainly see $7MM for a depleted team that’s just a defensive defenseman away from winning the whole thing. Maybe Florida?
That's why they should get it done now instead of letting it get to ufa bidding. Lindy needs to be kept here. Tires just got 7.25x7, Lindy is gonna get 5-6 most likely. He doesn't have the offense of toews

Just as long as there’s no NTC or NMC. Otherwise, he can walk wherever he likes. I’m done with these clauses.

He will absolutely get some kind of clause, but it's not a big deal as long as we don't go too far with it.

He will be 26 when his next contract starts. He's not eligible for a movement clause in that first year, so IF we wanted to trade him before July 1st, 2025, we could. The problem there is that we have absolutely no one to replace him. Robertson hasn't developed. Jones isn't good enough defensively. Maybe Scanlin can carve out an NHL career, but he's probably no more than a 6/7. Fortescue looks promising and Larsson is intriguing, but neither are likely to be playing in the NHL in 2025.

That leaves trade or UFA, and the odds of us finding a dman as good or better than Lindgren at a lower cost is pretty slim.

I'd be fine giving Lindgren 5 years @ 5.5 mil, with years 2 and 3 having an NMC and years 4 and 5 having a 10 team NTC. That gives us a window of only 2 years where we can't trade him, but he'll be 27-29 in those years. He should still be an effective player in those years, and we'll need that time to find his replacement.

We're going to need to draft some dmen. Fox, Miller and Lindgren are the only guys we can count on long term. Trouba is solid but expensive, and Schneider hasn't developed enough to take his place. Maybe by the end of the year, things will look different, but I'd be eyeing a dman in the 1st round in 2024.

I fully agree with all of this. My only view is that I doubt we make it all the way, so a sign and deal (to initiate the rebuild) may be our best long-term option.

I don't know that there's a rebuild in our near future. Yes, the older guys are still our best players in many cases, but in net and on defense, we are young. Plus, I can't see Dolan agreeing to another tear down and rebuild, even a short rebuild like the last one.

Our best bet is to hold onto our higher draft picks and keep adding youth, and hope that the guys we have already continue to progress. A well-run organization feeds itself:

Draft well
Develop those drafted players so they can replace the older players
Trade the older players for futures and use those futures to provide the next wave of players
Adding players through trades and free agency should be to fill gaps, for the most part. The majority of our core needs to be built through the draft if we want to have long-term success.

If trouba is traded before the end of his contract then Lindgren will be my front runner to take over the C. I understand people will want fox and such but Lindgren fits the mold in so many ways.

I agree with all of this. Good catch on the Dolan part: I was wearing my GM hat, not taking into account the impatience of our owner. Fair play.

Why do fans still call for a rebuild knowing damn well how impatient fans were during our last rebuild? It's one of those things everyone wants in theory and hates in practice?
