Prospect Info: Ryan Johnson, D, 2019 #31 overall: Signed, Rochester (AHL), Recalled 12/5/24

I’m wondering if it means Samuelsson is gone long term. Biro and Rousek make sense to call up because theyre just getting looks. Johnson might be getting a job. If there was a full time job available at forward I doubt Rousek gets that call. Biro probably still would because he had a great camp. Johnson did too. Rousek…not so much. I figure his call ends when Savoie has to come back. Johnson…whether he plays today or not…might be here for a bit.

I would be surprised if he isn't playing if there is a longer-term injury on defense. They want their prospect folks to be getting game reps per what they've said so often.

If it was to be the spare, it's probably Clague or even Davies.

I agree. But that’s kind of what I mean. If he doesn’t play tonight my first thought is he will be playing a lot for a while to come…and this is getting him up and acclimated. I don’t think he’s really even a spot start call up guy…especially with how the team has played as of late. Dropping a rookie into a fire he didn’t start is tough. That’s why…playing or not…I think his call up might mean bad things for Samuelsson.

It's odd because his game in Minny is exactly what I would want out of a third pairing guy with Johnson as his partner - calm, conservative, safe. How he's played in camp and early in the year with the Amerks though is very much a guy trying to pressure offensively. It'll be interesting to see what happens.

I'm figuring Sammy is going to be out for a bit. Hopefully they have learned from their mistakes of riding Dahlin and Power so hard last year so early and instead continue to try to distribute ice time more evenly rather than breaking people.

Damn is it nice to insert this man in the LU after injuries rather than the Clague's of the world. I'm assuming Johnson is the true #7 while Bryson is more an extra body if they need someone to play in a pinch. With Samuelsson on IR, I think we'll see quite a bit of Johnson.

The dream scenario for the Sabres is RJ turns into the long-term answer in our top 4. But in all reality that is probably a 2 year process in the works.

I think the realistic scenario is a solid longterm 3rd pairing guy. Maybe becomes that 5th defensemen that can move up when needed, though i prefer that to be a utility vet dman.

Yeah most likely. But him turning into a very solid bottom pairing who can play the right side with one of the big boys in a pinch or when a shake up is needed makes him worth his selection.

Going to be interesting to see if he can handle the rigours of being an undersized D in the NHL better than someone like Bryson or Clague does. If he can, there is definitely 2nd pairing upside there with the way he skates and thinks the game.

He's 6'1", 194 lbs so taller than Jokiharju and about the same size as Jake McCabe. I wouldn't call that small, more like average.

Where are you getting that data? MSG listed him as 6'0'' and 170lbs as does the official sabres website.

I am wondering how at 22 years of age, he could still be 170lbs. He would have had to avoided the gym at all costs at Minny

In EP I trust -

The 170 was his draft weight four years ago.

If that isn't enough, their own summer camp roster lists him at 190 lbs:

Edit - the Prospect Challenge has him at 195:

Wild fan but gopher fan as well. Was always a big fan of his game and could definitely see him being on a teams long term top 4. You guys got a good one

Yeah, even if he just plays the way he did with the Gophers - safe, almost unnoticeable but defensively dedicated - they can very much use that. It has seemed like they've told him to gamble more since turning pro. He was a bit more chaotic and looking to both start and join the offense more often in pre-season and with the Amerks than he was in Minny. Then again, against the Leafs, he displaced their depth guy Bryson to take a regular shift in that 7-man rotation and looked really calm doing it.

That said, the Hurricanes are so much more of a pressure team and do so much better a job taking away passing lanes than the Leafs, I'm curious to see how he does tomorrow if he is in fact Dahlin's partner. I'm also curious which side they will play as he's been working on his off-hand side down in Rochester some and Dahlin is also a left shot who seems to do best at right D.

You really think he’ll stay there for the game? The way Granato spoke, it sounded like a practice thing, but that might’ve been my error.

I haven't listened to Don's presser for today. If he's a placeholder, that's okay too - getting looks and some NHL time right now is fine, I expect him to be back and taking Bryson's lunch money by January if I'm honest.

Lol that was my first thought too... Looks exactly like Power

Agreed. Which is extra funny because my fiancé was just complaining about not being able to keep things in the hockey world straight now. During the devils game I had to walk her through Jack Hughes, Luke Hughes, Quinn Hughes, Jack Quinn. And with RyJo up I had to go over him and Erik Johnson.

It’s hard enough with the names without them looking like clones!
