Prospect Info: Ryan Johnson, D, 2019 #31 overall: Signed, Rochester (AHL), Recalled 12/5/24

Completely forgot we signed him. Seems like no one has him penciled in for the big club at all. Y’all think he will spend all year in Rochester, injuries aside?

Definitely needs to start in the AHL. If he shows himself too good for the AHL and ready for the big club, who knows come January/February

Other than Power, I think Johnson is the only waiver exempt near-NHL ready defenseman in the organization. I guess a lot depends on any upcoming trades, etc., as to whether the team tries to slide any other D thru waivers, but once the season starts I could definitely see Johnson getting some short term callups for road trips, etc.

And eventually I think he'll stick. IMO he's by far the most talented of our options for 7th defenseman. He just needs a bit of time in Rochester.

Much depends on what happens with trades and waivers.

He turns 22 later this month, so he's not a teenager like many prospects. And, as if we needed a reminder, Johnson spent 4 full seasons playing in arguably the premier D1 program at Minnesota. He's about as seasoned as it gets for a 1st-round pick coming into his rookie pro season.

Unless he's a total dud in Rochester, he should get a sniff with the Sabres at some point this season, injuries or not. What a huge bonus for the Sabres if he could take that LD spot on the 3rd pair with Dad Johnson.

He’s got a lot of hurdles to jump into the NHL. Especially if Dahlin plays left side to relieve the RHD pressure.

It's a given Bryson could slide through waivers based on his $1.85 M cap hit. Stillman is probably right on the line for a claim because better talent and lower salary.

Yes, but at this point Bryson truly "near-NHL ready" ?

:D

17. Ryan Johnson, D

7/24/2001 | 6-feet | 170 pounds | Shoots left

Drafted: No. 31 in 2019
Tier: Projected to play NHL games

Skating: Above NHL average
Puck skills: Below NHL average
Hockey sense: NHL average
Compete: NHL average

Analysis: Johnson has played a big role on a top NCAA team the last few years even if the offensive numbers haven’t been there. Johnson’s skating is his calling card. He’s a very powerful skater with the speed and edge work to transition pucks in the NHL and close on fast forwards. He’s just an average-sized defender without a ton of skill or physicality so while I think his feet get him games I’m not sure what his exact NHL role would be.

Composed and smooth in the 1st prospect Challenge game last night. Could certainly be a injury callup from Roch and I like the idea of him pairing with Power in the future.

The kid has been very impressive! Its funny how he was should a question mark before getting signed to what he's shown in preseason. He'll start down in Roch but he'll be a mid season callup

Excited to see this guy punch a few clicks on the odometer between rhachacha and the big club and eventually stick... after training camp 2024.

He strikes me as classic trade bait too, in the hfboards proposal sense but maybe in reality, from the Sabres side. I'm not getting too attached to him, but I at least believe he's an eventual NHLer now.

Recalled, wondering if he plays.
I’m wondering if it means Samuelsson is gone long term. Biro and Rousek make sense to call up because theyre just getting looks. Johnson might be getting a job. If there was a full time job available at forward I doubt Rousek gets that call. Biro probably still would because he had a great camp. Johnson did too. Rousek…not so much. I figure his call ends when Savoie has to come back. Johnson…whether he plays today or not…might be here for a bit.

Of course the problem at forward is that they don’t want to play Olofsson. Which should honestly be the same thing on D with Bryson.

So glad they’re both still here.
