Lance Lysowski has seemed to imply the issue wouldn’t be Johnson not wanting to sign, but rather the Sabres would opt to not sign him and receive the 2024 2nd instead. That will be the storyline i’m looking to follow in the next few days.

That sounds ludicrous. They think he is not an NHL defenseman? Through all the information we have been given that never seemed to be an issue.

I read the article, it didn't imply that, he only mentioned it as an option.

I don’t know - Lance seems to get things right with the Sabres and he’s tripled down on this point so far so it’s just something I’m following. I don’t agree with the sentiment at all.

No offense, but they seem super not correct… the minimum a team they would trade him to would be getting that second back ( aka the team that would trade for him would get that second compensatory pic so basically, it’s a free chance to sign a former first round pick…), so why would they not have tried to trade him like Portillo at the deadline if they had no intention of signing him? Portillo got a 3 and he’s honestly not even that good. I just don’t get the vibe that they don’t want to sign him from everything else we’ve heard plus he’s be gone for a 2nd+ already if they had no intention of signing.

Wasn't Lance also the one earlier this season who was adamant that Johnson wasn't signing?
IIRC his point all along has been that KA might opt for the 2024 2nd rather than signing him

Edit: Actually you’re right. I forgot he said “everybody knows he’s walking” in a podcast earlier this year.

I'd be surprised if Adams looks at the state of the Sabres blueline and prefers a late 2nd round pick to a solid young defenseman on an ELC.

I think he only mentioned it in the article as an option not that Adams was contemplating it.
(Now you got everyone in an uproar :) )

He mentioned it here as his “gut feel”

Also saw Pham (I know, I know) mention it today

Not that I’m a big “sources” guy but I can say a current coach on the team said Johnson “is small and plays small”. Although it’s just hearsay coming from me so take with that what you will.

Just so we’re all clear though, I 100% think we should sign him. Tallying up things that I’ve heard make me wonder if we will though.

Thank you for your posts. There is an article in the Buffalo News today and he says something different. I guess that covers all the grounds then for him. I guess we will know by the end of the week.

The comp 2nd is basically the 1st pick of the 3rd round.

Why in the hell would anyone think the 63rd pick of a draft I'd argue dies by pick 40 is worth more than Ryan Johnson, especially when our D pool is what it is?

Letting Johnson walk for a late 2nd is letting Hagel walk for nothing levels of stupid. It's a Botterill move.

If the coaching staff doesn't see him as that good of a defenseman, and instead have something else in mind, then yes that pick may be more valuable as a trade chip. Not saying this is what is happening, but it's definitely an option.

Based on their preference all of the Adams' era on mobile dmen (Bryson, Butcher, Pysyk, Clague, Dahlin, Power, Jokiharju) I don't buy that.

He’s not walking

He does a number of other things well.

In fact, he has the potential to be the answer to the Power partner question.

You don’t give that up for a late 2nd. You give up any 2nd, or more, for that.
it doesnt sound like people in the organization agree with that

which was the initial point, that insiders dont seem to think the sabres view him as "the answer to the power partner question" that you responded to that you didnt buy

Which person in the organization are you talking about? I have read nothing that says the sabres aren't interested. Do you have anything different?

Watching the title game, I was honestly unimpressed with his game. He was just a guy. Other dmen were far more impactful.

But that's his game. He's not the flashy guy who's going to get the attention. He's a defensive defenseman, which means when you don't hear his name that's a good thing. It means he's not messing up defensively.

Tbf I would have thought the organization to be interested to see how Bloom panned out, or to value a 2nd at higher than Greenway, so who really knows
