All I see is two journalists spewing their opinion. You said the organization. I would be shocked to see someone in the sabres organization saying negative things about Johnson.
if thats the way you feel then dont respond to comments about the what if

Tbf I would have thought the organization to be interested to see how Bloom panned out, or to value a 2nd at higher than Greenway, so who really knows

after the 22 draft and seeing how Krebs has developed pushed bloom down the prospect ladder.

Greenway plays in buffalo all next year and has a good year, buffalo likely gets something more than they gave up ( late 2nd+5th) toget him. Even if they stick with him and sign him and move him later they likely recoup what they gave up.

Lance Lysowski has seemed to imply the issue wouldn’t be Johnson not wanting to sign, but rather the Sabres would opt to not sign him and receive the 2024 2nd instead. That will be the storyline i’m looking to follow in the next few days.
65th overall or a dman you drafted 4 years ago in the first round who looks to be on his way to being a competent NHL defenseman at the age of 21.

No offense, but they seem super not correct… the minimum a team they would trade him to would be getting that second back ( aka the team that would trade for him would get that second compensatory pic so basically, it’s a free chance to sign a former first round pick…), so why would they not have tried to trade him like Portillo at the deadline if they had no intention of signing him? Portillo got a 3 and he’s honestly not even that good. I just don’t get the vibe that they don’t want to sign him from everything else we’ve heard plus he’s be gone for a 2nd+ already if they had no intention of signing.

Portillo got a 3rd due to what appears to be a gentleman’s agreement among GMs.

Unless there’s some unknown off ice issue, opting for the second over a d-man that is 3 years down his development path seems silly. Especially when your d pipeline is bare boned. This feels like negotiating through the media rather than anything else:

3 months ago: he’s walking
Last month: he’s signing
Today: well maybe the SABRES aren’t interested

This feels like a disagreement on terms and the Sabres front office are trying to get ahead of it by saying “well we didn’t want him ANYWAY”. Who knows though, could just be an active negotiation

Agreed. Plus, the 2nd wouldn't be until NEXT year as well, meaning it's an extra year before the player picked there bears any fruit as well.

Sounds like the news drumming up clicks tbh

It’s even dumber than that because the pick isn’t until next year’s draft. You’re turning a late first round pick in 2019 into a 2024 late second. To pick a player, if you ever see him….and the odds are you won’t see much of him at all…until 2027 or 2028.

but tbf…2028 lines up with when Adams will get around to finish building the team

"Gentlemen's agreement" probably makes it sound more conspiratorial than it actually is, but it appears that front offices around the league have come to a consensus that a 3rd round pick is the going rate for a player that isn't going to sign with the team that drafted him.
That seems correct ( when not a player like Johnson with attached minimum value of a a late 2)

It's not just the Sabres making the decision here. Buffalo's blueline COULD be looked at as something that would not be beneficial playing in for Ryan's career. Depending on if they move on from Joker or not there, could be up for grabs maybe one spot in the top 4. For a guy like Johnson, that is what you strive for, and the opportunity may not be something he sees favorable for this organization, especially since his competition is around his age as well, and the roles Ryan would be used best in to maximize his skillsets, are primarily given to guys like Dahlin and Power.

Have to think we get a tweet tonight or in the morning from an insider (via agent) on what's going on. If it goes south my guess would be Johnson had third thoughts and draft pick/fit leak today to Lance is damage control from KA for the bad look coming.

But hopefully not.

Nothing from Chad btw...

Faber has signed, Knies has signed. Lacombe has communicated with Verbeek that he'll be signing with the Ducks.

Yesterday he was replying to a bunch of people on twitter saying he's confident in Johnson signing.

My guess is Adams is just giving Johnson the day to relax after his season ended in heartbreak, which is exactly what he did with Levi too if people remember.

The comp 2nd is basically the 1st pick of the 3rd round.

Why in the hell would anyone think the 63rd pick of a draft I'd argue dies by pick 40 is worth more than Ryan Johnson, especially when our D pool is what it is?

Letting Johnson walk for a late 2nd is letting Hagel walk for nothing levels of stupid. It's a Botterill move.
Sounds like a bunch of lip service because he won't sign. Just admit he won't sign. No shame. And the 63rd overall also doesn't factor in we get the asset worth more today. Time value of money/assets does matter.

Given our defensive prospect pool, half he defense we ice at the NHL level, and the amazing vibes I keep hearing about for a team missing the playoffs again…

there’s some shame if a defensive prospect passing on the opportunity. And for the GM who has an empty cupboard behind his lack of depth in year four.

This is year four!? By this off-season it’ll be year 8!
