He is a LH Mark Pysyk as a likely best case scenario.

The issue is that the Sabres took that type of player over high impact offensive wingers like Kaliyev and Brink.

Kaliyev was coming off of a 51 goal and 102 point OHL season, Brink had just lit up the USHL as a 17yo, and the Sabres passed on both of them.

It was frustrating then and it is still frustrating now.
If he is mark pysyk it's probably not terrible value for where he was picked, the other guys having more risk.

That said, I agree it's frustrating because no picks are ever risk free. Even if Johnson is the "safer" pick hes far from an nhl lock.

If he has an nhl career and a few guys behind him are better, I won't love it but I'll take it. But the low floor, low ceiling is concerning. Until kaliyev has a bad year (which might not be until he gets to the nhl) it will be hard to rationalize, this pick.

Kaliyev and Brink both had issues which caused them to drop. It's still too early to say if they made the right decision. I preferred the forwards as they picked Samuelsson the previous year but I won't be too upset with a Pysyk type that can hold down a 4/5 slot

They went two and three picks after Johnson. So, all the people that wanted either of those two over Johnson at the time of the draft weren't reaching for guys.

And the Pysyk comp is the upside and I doubt he ends up being that good. My guess is that Johnson turns into a good AHL/7th D in the NHL kind of guy.

They dropped from where they were projected as did Lavoie. I personally see him as a better skating Brady Skej, he has very good distancing and defensive instincts.

Having followed Chad exchanges about Johnson (not just with Lance) I got the following picture of the player out it.

— Good defender who is a good skater with a good first pass but at the moment doesn’t have much to his game offensively. Jury is out if he can change that (offensive game).

He’s a left handed Pysyk.

Very skilled skater with good hockey sense and compete-level. Not a physical player, Johnson relies on his way of reading the game. Not too flashy either, when he is not skating with the puck, but a solid defender and a good team player.

He's a dull player and we wanted something flashy. He just turned 19 in July and is 6'1" 174lb. He'll always have the skating and hockey sense. He has to fill out. I think his upside is something like Brett Hedican.

Was better tonight. Looked a bit more confident and tried to make more things happen. Had a nice assist on the opener; showed some nice vision carrying the puck down to the dots, curling, and finding his open D partner Faber. Lost his check on OSU’s only goal, and took a penalty in the final minutes of the game that ended up giving OSU a 6-on-4.

I guess my only point with Johnson is that he did not pick himself in the first round. Botts did, and yes - it appears that some players picked after him have had some success at the level at which they currently play. I don't want to put myself in a position that I'm defending a Botts pick -because I hated Botts as GM. But the fact is, he's the player we have right now and I think he should be judged on his own merit as opposed to being judged based on the degree of disdain we have for the guy who picked him or who we could have had - who also still need to make their mark at the NHL level, btw

The past few days, I've read a lot of scouting reports on Johnson done prior to the 2019 draft. Low floor, low ceiling are the last things I think of when I read them. Most of the scouts pointed out his lack of offensive output for sure. They also pointed out some inconsistencies in his passing. They all said he has a high hockey IQ, great acceleration, very good speed, outstanding edgework, excellent ability to stop zone entries, great positional play, great work in cutting off angles, a good stick, great puck handling and control, a great outlet pass, excellent in leading controlled offensive entries and his high ceiling.

Personally, I think he'll need this year and next in college before he turns pro. Let's see if he makes the WJC team and see how he performs there. Overall as someone up-thread said, what's so bad about having a smooth skating defensive oriented defenseman for the next 10 years. Any of you guys ever heard of Mike Ramsey, Bill Hajt, Tony Lydman or James Patrick? We've already got Dahlin, Risto and Jokiharyu and perhaps Pilut. Complementary players are also desirable on a team

I was finally able to watch a game. I thought that Johnson looked very good. Steady play, good decisions, strong with the puck. primarily played right D. He ended up with one assist, 9 shots - 3 of them on goal and 1 blocked shot. He had a second assist nullified because he had knocked the puck out of the air with a high stick prior to a Gopher goal on which he would have gotten an assist.

Picked up an assist on the Gophers' first goal tonight.. Finished with 1 A, 3 SOG and 2 blocked shots

Minnesota 3 Mich St 1

We may have an actually solid defensive defenseman on our hands, I'll take it considering how he was written off already by just about everyone.

Put me in the camp of not one bit disappointed if he turns out to be a speedy shutdown D. It's something out team has been desperately missing for years. I see the Pysyk comparisons, but on the high end how about Brodin? Or Henrik Talinder? That's the kind of player I've been pining for since Pysyk left.

I’m dying laughing reading the Twitter exchange between Kris Baker and Chad from xBuffalo about Johnson. Chad looks like a knucklehead.
