I just checked out the history of Derek Stepan and Logan Coture. Both had a career average of .7 pts per game before signing a roughly 3 mill 2 year bridge. Joey is about .5 for his career. Seems like he is destined for 2 years and if he gets 4 or more he should consider himself fortunate.

I think they're more concerned about Johansen not being a flash in the pan than they're concerned about the $$ they'll have to dole out in a few years.

I agree. It's better to have to pay more for a successful player who has earned it, than too much for a guy who didn't live up to his potential.

If we follow through and sign Bob to a deal he deserves ONE year after he signs his bridge, then Johansen would be foolish not to take the bridge. It could be a 10 -15 million dollar difference.

I'd be curious which of these gets done first.

I'm not sure any players think like that. I'm not implying he's going to spend the rest of the summer sitting on his couch if he gets a real contract but why would you leave money on the table?

dunno if I agree with this assessment...I see joey at a 65+ point guy not a 50 pt guy like the below twitter poster states...but this tweet is quite interesting

He doesn't have the Eberle red flags about his deal but he doesn't have the Hall signs saying a long term $6m deal is a steal either.

And he doesn't have the RNH flags saying this is just a downright terrible deal either.

Yeah what a surprise. Can we stop going after his character and jumping off ledges for a few days now?

Because the whole basis of the bridge deal is so he keeps improving, with the worry being that if he gets his money, he'll stop working.

This is something almost every single RFA goes through. It has nothing to do with work ethic.

He had the lower hand here. Doing a bridge deal was going to be the best he could do. He will probably take it. None of that makes him all of a sudden a good kid, if he's not one. I'm not saying I think he's a problem kid, but if he is, taking what you can get when you're backed into a corner doesn't make him not one if he is.

What a surprise :sarcasm:.

My guess is nobody as knocking at the door with an offer sheet type offer so leverage is now back in the CBJ court. if he wants to be on the team, he's got to earn his money on a bridge deal.

I could see all this wrapped up in the next couple of weeks if they have decided a bridge deal is now what they can do.

Saying stuff like 'It was an insulting offer, slap in the face' to the media during a pretty noteworthy negotiation doesn't make him a problem child either. It was all negotiation tactics.

Darn bridge contracts. So rare in the NHL.

They're just about as rare as wildly overpaying for UFAs that have "earned it"

(IMO) Applying the typical "kids these days think they don't gotta earn it" bridge-deal rhetoric to Ryan Johansen is stodgy nonsense. He's the real deal, probably already the best player on the team. And if my GM publicly hedged his bets on me I would be insulted, too. Jarmo can sign this kid long-term NOW, or give him $8m a year in July 2016.

We're all on the same team here, and ultimately have no impact on the deal so I will agree to disagree with all of you. Go Jackets

Do you have evidence of this or is this just your interpretation of events?

There's a line in the Tom Petty song Refugee that goes: "You believe what you want to believe."

It's just my Dad's interpretation, and he does/involved in contract negotiations for his job. I tend to trust what he says about contract negotiations.
