If it does leak into training camp with a short term deal and he does end up being what we want him to be, which is a top line center in the NHL, its probably going to be very costly come UFA time. Whether that means in $$$'s or he leaves, question is is this organization willing to pay that top dollar amount

And if he signs a bridge contract and does not fulfill his potential, will a majority praise JD and Jarmo for wise budget management or blame them for not giving him what he wanted so he'd be happy and reach his peak? Not easy actually being the ones responsible for those decisions, glad I'm not in that position!

Well the good news is that with a short term contract he'll still be an RFA for the next contract although as a practical matter I think he'll have arbitration rights then so I'm guessing the next deal will be long term and big dollars if he lives up to potential. If he puts up 70+ pts the next two seasons I think his next deal is at least $8mm and that's if there aren't a lot more Kanes/Toews deals handed out and the cap doesn't rise ridiculously.

I still think the 2 year at up to $6 mill per is the way to go because basing the next deal on 3 years of super play is much more comforting than going 7 or 8 based on one year. Middle ground of say 5 years at the same 6 million is probably a good deal but I'd be nervous.

Very tough situation although I guess its a good one to have.

Reading between the lines...time to start edging towards the cliff. When the team starts, for lack of a better term, calling guys out in the media, it's never a good sign.

What are you talking about? This isn't anything new - it was reported the team wanted a bridge, the player wanted long term. POHOP JD confirming that.

I don't get the need for everyone to act so dramatic about this. Negotiations like this happen with teams every year.

A bridge contract would mean he is still RFA when it's time to do a new deal, cheese.

This team keeps things really under wraps. As mild as it is, the team taking to the press is a sign that things aren't going well. Remember how, late in the Nash saga, offers started getting leaked, almost certainly by Howson? Same principle. No news is probably better than some news in many cases.

How's JD calling him out? Seems like he's just reiterating the club's stated position.

Personally I don't think Joey has earned a long term deal yet. His improvement is impressive and last year was great but there are still flags. Also, I'm selfish and want the trajectory to continue upward so we will sign him long term after his "prove it" two year bridge deal.

Certainly the talent is there but I want to see more before paying the man like a top flight C. If the cap does continue to go up and we continue to win there should be no issue with a long term high $ deal. If he sulks and drags on a short term deal you can still move him based on "potential".

That's pretty much where I am, too.

Link? I don't remember this. We got the Portzline stuff but...

http://bluejacketsxtra.dispatch.com...akers/2013/06/bobrovsky-talks-not-moving.html

Asked if any progress was made with agent Paul Theofanous, Kekalainen said: "I wouldn't say that, no. It was pretty much the same stuff we went through last time (we talked)."

"(Theofanous) has earned the right to negotiate from a good position," Kekalainen said. "Sergei played very well this season. He just won the Vezina Trophy. But we still have to do the right thing for our franchise."

Sounds familiar, no?

I agree that no news is good news, but this isn't news.

It was already reported the team was looking for a bridge deal, Jarmo already confirmed it after Diva said it in his comments. I see nothing to read into here.

Again, it's July.

It's somewhat significant that this is Davidson talking now, not Jarmo. It makes me a little less comfortable.

It happened to be who Rimer was interviewing at the time and who the question was asked to. You guys are getting too wrapped around the axle about this. If Joey wants to play in the NHL, he'll sign a bridge contract. Period. Everyone knows this. This isn't Joey's agent's first dance. He is well aware of this. All that is happening is posturing that happens during any tough negotiation, hoping you'll get more concessions from the other side. Everyone relax. Jeez.

Well that's one way to make a mountain out of little to nothing.
