Ryan Callahan

Except for Nash. He's been quiet the last few games.

Yeah, kind of disappointing, but other guys have stepped it up and taken the bull by the horns. Also, I thought he had a good third period, he almost scored a couple of times. Hopefully he turns on his beast mode in the playoffs; that gear is there. He's looked tired as of late.

It's because he lost his buddy Stepan (he can't carry everyone!). He's just saving his energy for the playoffs and it's cool that's where I'd prefer him to be beastly :P

Watching the first period again and the Hags-Steps-Cally line did a great job of setting the pace of the game, they pressured nicely and are a great group of two way players so they looked great in their own zone when they had to be there.

But he has a Brass God on his line. :sarcasm:

What the **** is up with Callahan?

I don't get it. He's always been a smart player, but now, he's playing dumb, just aimless hockey.

??

He's always been a low hockey IQ player. His offense is basically pray his patented to look in front of the net passes miraculously hits a stick. His defense is also very overrated. Any player can block shots.

He is a good complimentary 2nd line player, but is expected to carry load on this team. Not his fault.

Defense is overated? Yeah ok...Made the defensive play of the game clearing the puck from an open Crap in front after Craps had the puck down low for about 45 seconds

Probably the best shot blocker in the league, which is a skill and takes lots of balls

Cally struggled hard tonight. Went hard to the net, got a little too aggressive, got a penalty. Got physical on the backcheck, got a penalty.

I hate when they put him with Nash, because he starts trying to play a different game in the offensive zone. It doesn't play to his strengths. It doesn't help that his best play in the game got completely whiffed on by Nash.

Thankfully, his defensive play and PKing are still sharp, but I think they need to have him with Hags or Clowe on his wing.

Cally needs to be our best forechecker if we are going to climb back into this. He was probably our worst tonight.

Also can't be taking stupid penalties, especially since he's such a valuable PK'er.

I can honestly say I did not expect this from you......

Yes, his defense is overrated. He is basically a Brandon Prust defensively. To be a true good defensive player, you should be able to dominate physically along the boards and hold onto puck or clog up the center ice lane, which is very tough for a winger to do. (Exception may be Hossa, Kovalchuk, Eriksson, Landeskog) Callahan is a great shot blocker, which is fine. But having those many blocked shots means that the team is constantly outchanced while he's on the ice. To me, that is not good defensive hockey.

Callahan really laid one on Erskine last night. Erskine is by far the toughest Caps player and he went missing for several shifts. Callahan has been hitting a lot so it's not like he isn't doing anything. The roughing penalty was dumb though.

He plays defense how Torts' system wants him to IMO, and he's good at playing defense in this system.

Also, Callahan has a pretty strong wrist/snap shot, which he should be using at every opportunity ie. when he's within the circles. His IQ passing-wise isn't Sedin-level but it's not the worst either. He just tries to make hard passes/no-look passes too often and should opt to make the easier pass most of the time... but again, I wouldn't call him a "low IQ" player. Probably more "average IQ".

I'd like to see he and Richards both on the 3rd line, let Stepan, Brassard be one/two put Nash with Stepan and Hagelin, Zucc with Brassard and Boyle? Problem with that is we have to shift guys from LW to RW and RW to LW.

This is one of the most egregiously wrong statements I have ever seen on these boards, and thats saying a lot.

If you an anti-Torts person, then it would make sense to be an anti-Callahan person. In many, many ways, Callahan's game personifies the Torts philosophy and system.

Didn't think the roughing penalty against Erskine was a good call.. This series has seen plenty of those post-whistle face checks go uncalled. Erskine being a main culprit. Had no problem with anything Callahan did except for the dumbass refs calling it.

I don't agree with this but respectfully see how you say. I think it's great to have players like this and that style but not everyone. I think some shouldn't play like that

Best shotblocker in the league is probably Ryan Johnson if he's still playing. (Not sure)

On this team, he is well behind Girardi in number of block shots.

I don't think it's a trait that much to be proud of. A ridiculously high number of blocked shots likely means the team gets out-chanced whilst on the ice.

For me, his struggles to get puck out of our zone is why I'm hesitant to label him as 'one of the best defensive players in hockey'.

This is inherently true on PK situations. He blocks most of his shots on the PK. We will obviously get out-chanced on the PK.
