Ryan Callahan

??

He's always been a low hockey IQ player. His offense is basically pray his patented to look in front of the net passes miraculously hits a stick. His defense is also very overrated. Any player can block shots.

He is a good complimentary 2nd line player, but is expected to carry load on this team. Not his fault.

Disagree with a lot of this.

His defense is definitely not overrated, and it takes high hockey IQ to be a good defensive player.

He plays defense how Torts' system wants him to IMO, and he's good at playing defense in this system.

That's why he's a problem. A big problem since he's the identity of this inept system.

Also, Callahan has a pretty strong wrist/snap shot, which he should be using at every opportunity ie. when he's within the circles. His IQ passing-wise isn't Sedin-level but it's not the worst either. He just tries to make hard passes/no-look passes too often and should opt to make the easier pass most of the time... but again, I wouldn't call him a "low IQ" player. Probably more "average IQ".

Can go on for days debating average or low IQ lol. But yeah, you made some good points there. Good shot doesn't mean good IQ.

This is inherently true on PK situations. He blocks most of his shots on the PK. We will obviously get out-chanced on the PK.

True, but I see him dropping around like a fish trying to block shots on ES. Use your ****ing stick and utilize the middle of the ice. This goes for a lot of players on the team.

Callahan really laid one on Erskine last night. Erskine is by far the toughest Caps player and he went missing for several shifts. Callahan has been hitting a lot so it's not like he isn't doing anything. The roughing penalty was dumb though.

Been looking for a video of that hit, if anyone can find it

Really I think sometimes peoples expectations are so far out of hand. Callahan is a 45-55 point a season player who does all the little things. He's got good skill--not very good skill. He has a predictable shoot first mentality. He hits--he penalty kills-he blocks shots-he's capable of making clutch plays. He's not a superstar--not really a 1st line player. His point average per game like most players is going to lag in the playoffs. This is something that occurs to 90% of the rest of the players in the playoffs. There are no easy games against weak opponents in the playoffs. It's all a grind. That he continues to hit, block shots, penalty kill and once in a while create some offense is what you want to see from him. Three games in he has an assist. Hopefully he'll do more in that regard but playoffs are about attrition--it's not about cute breakouts out of your own end. There is less room than in the regular season because teams are forechecking harder and more determined to force the play to the boards. No team is going to get by without guys hitting, cycling, forechecking, back checking, blocking shots, winning face-offs, killing penalties. You got to have guys ready to get their hands dirty and to bleed if necessary.

It's official Callahan did something uncool with a friend or family member of Kershaw. He can't leave the guy alone. I can't believe how a guy that plays with his heart on his sleeve every game, albeit probably overrated by the media, can be **** on in every thread.

Dan Girardi also 'plays with his heart on his sleeve'. More minutes, more blocked shots, tougher role to fill on this team.

Yet, people are bashing/wanting to trade him constantly. Why don't people harp on people who speak negatively about Girardi?

Hypocrisy at its finest.

Girardi is a liability for at least 30 games a season. More minutes? More blocked shots? He's a defenseman! Also, bashing Girardi in every thread is also unwarranted.

I think you're both wrong.

G doesn't get all that much flak, but when he does it's because he ****ed up BAD.

He is not a liability for 30 games a season though.

Lots of hyperbole going round here.

Every season he starts off like a house on fire and then for a long time there are posts about him slumping. Time to accept that he can't play a consistent season. Disappointing that he couldn't even do it this year.

Wow what a gross exaggeration. Girardi has definitely not been a liability like you're claiming.

I know!! I was a missile on that hit and Erskine was slow to get up...and went straight to the bench.

I think Callahan is playing good, but not his best that I've seen. Hopefully he's heating up.

My favorite part is how the ref has his hands up, and as Cally makes contact, you can see him flinch.

His offense simply hasn't been there, but at least he's making some impact.

This board also thought he was better than Staal at some points, and that Brandon Dubinsky could work as a first liner.

I prefer to use my eyes than someone elses. Girardi doesn't play alright. He's either outstanding, or his brain isn't in it. He's really suited to be a #2 or #3 D man, but he's being treated like a #1. of course he will struggle sometimes.

Good teams don't have one leader. Callahan is one leader and a good one at that. One of our A is out and another needs to be taken out like old yeller.

Cally is one important cog on this team who can certainly help the team win. If you can find a trade where you get significant value for him then you might do it but theres no need to actively seek a trade for him. He's a damn good player and great Ranger. This teams other problems prevent it from winning, Callahan is not a problem that keeps this team from winning.

I don't know much about Jaskin why did you pull this name out of nowhere? what has he done that makes him more valuable? Similarly what would you get for Staal?

I can't help but wonder how we would be doing with tarasenko right now and/or Sauer

Callahan is a very overrated player. He is not a very damn good player, he is a player who only produces because he gets spoonfed with minutes with skilled players that he eventually has to produce. He is a very bad captain and fails to produce in the playoffs. I don't see him as much flak as Stepan, a sophomore got last year. He's had less playoff points than Girardi the past 2 playoffs, yet everyone is basically fine with him moving. He is a player who takes no accountability for his team and his own piss poor play and I don't want him around the younger players on the team. Why is Ryan Callahan an untouchable on this team exactly?

Jaskin is a very big, skilled LWer who had the highest PPG in the CHL. He is only 19 years old and got cup of coffee with the Blues early this season. He was so good, they didn't both sending him straight to the AHL, but rather right away with the NHL club. He is a very realistic target the Rangers should be after and Callahan is a good fit for the Blues.

As for Staal, I think we could get the 6th overall pick this year, although with his recent injury history, I doubt he holds much value at this point.

He's very over-rated by who? He's exactly what most people think he is: a second line RW who does some banging, is an excellent PKer, who over his career has played with more heart and soul than a lot of guys in this league. No one's saying he's Mario Lemieux ;)

Rangers fans say he would be a 1st liner on most teams in the league and reference his 30g season to back that up, despite never putting up 30g in a season. He is not a second line RWer on this team when he is 4th in the league in TOI/PG amongst forwards. That type of ice time is only warranted for elite forwards. Callahan is a 2nd/3rd line guy.

You're overlooking that he gets a ton of special teams minutes. Led NYR forwards with 2:30 a game on the PK this season and also got over 3:00 a game on the PP. You may not love him getting that much PP time, but he did score 25% of the teams' PP goals this season. And calling him a 3rd line RW is idiotic. The average 3rd line RW the last full 82 game season scored 20.2 points. Callahan scores more goals than that.

He only scores more goals than that because of his ice time. He is a good PKer, but he wouldn't be top unit PP on teams with competent powerplay.

Very technical with saying he never hit 30 goals. He hit 29.
