RW Yegor Chinakhov (2020, 21st, CBJ)

And how could they do that? There were teams willing to pick him in the 1st round and they didn't have another pick until the 3rd.

trade down ideally. The highest other ranking was 28th, but maybe nobody was moving on draft day. shrug.

Seems like a high upside pick. Gotta love Jarmo keeping things interesting for us. I wonder if they have plans for him to come over after the 20/21 season.

Love this pick. Columbus are swinging for the fences here with a pick in the 20s. Chinakhov plays top 6 or not at all. Screw the boring safe picks shooting for a grinder. Leave him to mature nicely in Russia for a few years and see if the draft wheel handed you an all star.

Even GM's and NHL scouts make mistakes... I dont get this comment.
Obviously they do, and plenty of mistakes. But what makes people say that they made a mistake on this pick?

It could be a mistake, jackpot or something in the middle. Personally i just put more value on scouts who have watched this kid day in day out, talked with him and his coaches, family etc. and clearly see something about him which regular youtube and eliteprospects scouting doesn't. Maybe it's just me.

Also given their previous track record with European prospects and the fact that they had him on their top-10 is enough to convince me.

Lol. I love that so many statheads imploded with this pick. Jarmo, Ville and the scouting team clearly see something they think is worth betting on. They said they had Chinakhov top 10. That's first line potential. You don't trade down if you get first line potential in the 20s. you just take the pick.

Jarmo said he had offers to trade down, Washington moved up to 22 and they were probably also asking about 21.

28 wasn't necessarily the next highest ranking, that was just the one scout that gave his team's ranking for Chinakhov. Another scout said they had Chinakhov high but wouldn't give a number, and presumably there are plenty of teams not sharing what they were thinking. Here we are days later, and if we don't know where Chinakhov would have gone, then obviously Jarmo wouldn't have known.

I'm loving the controversy as well. But is it really Jarmo/Siren vs the statheads? Chinakhov's stats aren't out of line for a first rounder. He's six or so months older than Amirov and Podkolzin and currently scoring more at the same level. Maybe there is an analytics case against Chinakhov but I have not seen it.

In some alternate reality, the Blue Jackets passed on Chinakhov, certain he’d be available later, and the Capitals shocked the world by taking Chinakhov 22nd overall.

Pretty terrible take considering he isn't really this boom-or-bust prospect. Especially the "plays top 6 or not at all" part. He made Omsk this year because unlike his opposition, he has a decent frame and passable 2-way game. He is a well-rounded guy who at the very least can contribute from the bottom 6, again the sole reason he started this season in the KHL to begin with.

He was probably asleep. Was it about 8am in Omsk?
More like 5 or 6 (not exactly sure when the pick was made, people said 1st round went on forever) but in any case, if he wasn't alerted by someone saying he will go in the 1st round it's highly likely he was sleeping.

He signed a 3 year extension in the KHL today.. that's not ideal if you were expecting him to come over anytime soon.

You have any source for that? Cuz I checked basically everywhere and it doesn't look like it has happened at least yet.

If he signs that 3 years deal, it is kind of catastrophic for Columbus after that terrible free agent period.

Let's hope he decides against that.

Why? I doubt CBJ are in a hurry to bring the guy over. He is a smaller, skinnier skill guy primed for the top 6. Let him fill out and find his NHL ready legs in Russia, then bring him over as a grown up player.

That works out pretty well if the guy is coming over around age 21. The problem is that some of these Russian prospects are signed until they are 22/23 and for forwards that is one or two prime years that you are giving up. That's the situation for Marchenko and Voronkov, it would be unfortunate for the Jackets if they also had Chinakhov stuck overseas for that long. They might not have plans to have him in the lineup in the next two years, we don't know their assessment, but there is undoubtedly a baseline anxiety to get all of these guys signed and playing in Columbus/Cleveland.

Sure. But that is also one of the prime years you can keep them for longer once the ELC and RFA contracts are used up, right? If Chinakov comes over when he is 23 now signed on his ELC, proves a hit, then it's RFA time, then by the time the UFA situation rolls around CBJ will have had his prime years for almost free.

Or am I missing something?

My understanding is that unless they're starting in the NHL as teenagers, in which case UFA comes after 7 years in the league, it's 27 for everybody. So after age 20, every year your guy is in the KHL is one less year you have him. Artemi Panarin started at age 23 and was UFA after four years in the NHL. The ELC is also shortened to one or two years.
