Laine is the real deal, very impresse by his first game at international level (senior). He will be a beast. He did a few mistakes but so do veterans, no big deal.

wow finlands future is really looking good. A line with Laine - Barkov and Puljujärvi, if they live up to their potential, then that is how a first line should look like.

I was impressed yesterday. He was able to keep up with the flow of the game and even take control of it at times. That was no junior level hockey, but instead teams filled up by their best players who are playing in Europe (naturally not talking about the final WC teams but still). He was unlucky not to score and created a couple of chances that should have been buried. A few mistakes too, but nothing worrysome. I think Laine could have a real shot at making the actual WC team and re-writing the history. Speaks volumes that the coach uses him in the last minutes of the game when the team is down by a goal.

Maybe his social security details are falsified, cause this guy doesn't look like someone who is just 17 year old.

Oh man, the future is looking bright!

I see what you did there, you did that on purpose right? :naughty:

This guy is impressive and will go second in draft. Style reminds a lot of Sundin. Same size and also righ shot.

Loved how he went to D zone to get the puck and then skated to the O zone just couple of seconds before the end, but then he passed the puck to the player who fumbled an easy pass (:shakehead) and Finland couldn't even try to score. It's nice that he is a teamplayer but Laine 2 years ago would have just shot and scored a goal with his magic wrister.

I find his talent level substantially higher then Puljujarvi. His hands and shot are just incredible, the puck is glued to his stick.

I do not know about all hockey rules, but I do not think that is allowed.

McDavid with Laine is basically the reincarnation of Gretzky with Kurri.

Laine would pot 40 in his rookie season tbh

Though this time it would be the Mcdavid(Gretky) being the better two-way player and Laine(Kurri) getting all the glory. :D

Hall - McDavid - Laine
Draisaitl - RNH - Eberle

That makes me want to puke.

Nooo! (Though as a Finnish guy it would be fun to see a 60 goal scorer from Finland for one last time)

I think Laine tops as a 50 goal scorer at most unless he gets some help from a playmaking center on his line.

He wasn't horribad, and the team around him certainly wasn't good (which is a requirement for having a player like him fully use his strengths), but I don't see Laine being close to a WHC ticket with a showing like this.

The whole team looked bad vs Swe, hard to blame 17y old Laine for that.

In case that was a response to the above, let it be said that I wasn't blaming Laine for the entire team looking bad, simply evaluating his individual effort, which was lacking as well.

That being said, I'd like to see him play as part of a better squad of Lions. Especially with better d-men who actually can QB the offense. In these games, he was the one to carry the puck up the zone most of the time, simply because he was the best suited guy for it whenever he was on the ice (good control and big body, hard to bump off). This in turn meant he was rarely in position to do any magic past the offensive blueline.

Laine played exactly like you'd expect from a talented 17-year-old in international hockey games, ie. not an impact player at all. I'm more baffled that Aho actually managed to keep 1.0 PPG, that was very unexpected.

It was a good experience for him to play against tougher opponents, I think. It'll give him more focus when restarting his fitness training in earnest. As to him probably not making the NT final squad, that's just the realistic expectation at this point. His role in the NT would be a scoring winger and if he's not able to execute that role that against an SHL squad then there's absolutely nothing he can accomplish in the WHCs.

There's no player I would rather see on the Finnish power play squad or playing in the final minutes of a losing game than Laine. His shot is so dangerous that he would be a great asset even if his game still has some deficiencies.

I think that he could be great in a scoring role on a good line where the others do most of the heavy lifting but can still get him the puck. I think Koivu could be a good center (of those who could be available) for him. However, I realize that it might be a little unlikely that Koivu would join the team with the World Cup coming.

My point is, Laine is arguably the best Finnish sniper at this point in time (the only other plausible choice would be Pulkkinen) and that alone might be enough for him to make the team.
