God damn, that video was mouth watering...

Just the mere thought of him putting on a Habs jersey makes me want to start sobbing with joy.

Heatley in his prime is a good comparison. Even then, I think Laine is a better skater.

Not sure how accurate NHLE is for european teams yet but BTN has NHLE for NLA at .44 and NHLE for Liiga at .54.

Doing the math (regular season only), Laine would have 40.5 points in his 46 NLA games played (or score at a rate of .880 ppg).

Matthews has 46 points in 36 games (1.28ppg)
Can you give me the link on that, what I posted was from 2013. Those seem to be the Dejqrdins numbers from around 2009.

It is very hard to compare leagues against each other expecially with just one fixed number.

Tho scoring in Liiga is a lot harder than scoring in NLA. This season liiga had 4,72 goals scored per game and NLA had 6,05 goals scored per game. HUGE difference there that shows Liiga is more about defence and NLA is all about attack.

NLA teams and players score 30% more goals/points than liiga teams and players.

EDIT: In NLA points tend to pileup to top players because teams arent that stocked. Good first and second lines but awful 3rd and 4th. In liiga most team roll out 4 lines and points tend to spread more even for all players.

Thanks for the statistics kunekune! This is exactly what I have been claiming here every single time when some people are putting down the stats that young Finnish prospects have earned in Liiga lately.

For example I would say that Aho had probably even a bit better season than Matthews had in NLA. Definitely at least the same level season. The scoring difficulty is really that different in these leagues. Comparing Aho and Matthews is after all quite reasonable, as they are practically the same age. Only less than a month of age difference. And of course in the playoffs Aho has been way better than Matthews, as well as he was in the WJC. This puts also Laine's an Pulju's stats better into some perspective. Both have had quite exceptional seasons for only 17 year old guys.

But definitely I see the situation so that the only one of this Finnish trio whom is NHL ready is Aho. And even he would probably still benefit more from staying for one more season in Liiga, to gain more strength and add even a bit more explosiveness to his arsenal. It would probably make his NHL transition easier and safer with injury risks.

Laine and Pulju are still that raw both, that they definitely should stay for one more year in Liiga and become even more dominating players. It would be an important self confidence boost that would help a lot with their careers.

If you just compare statistics Ahos 45gp 45 points in Liiga is DEFINITELY better and more impressive than Matthews 36gp 46 points in NLA. There is no question about this.

But hockey is more than just statistics.

Yeah, again I mentioned it was likely not the most accurate but it did account for Liiga being harder (.54 NHLE for Liiga vs. .44 NHLE for NLA)

Holy crap at that video. The guy is just an absolute monster. I swear he's just toying with guys out there sometimes.

Habs are going to luck out and win the #2 pick and happily select Laine. :)

You would have to settle for Matthews then. Laine will be slam dunk #1 overall.

Highly doubtful. Matthews appears to be a lock for 1.

Can you please point me in the direction of these rates, they seem outdated. They are significantly different than Volman's 2013 numbers.

No it isn't. Matthews is better citing both conversion rates mentioned in this thread.

You are the one who is using outdated info. As a North American you don't seem to understand how much these leagues change every year. Using 2009 or 2013 info isnt very realiable expecially when 2013 was lockout year. Those numbers are calculated when E Karlsson was playing in Jokerit :D

Like mentioned in this thread NLA teams score 30% more goals(6,05 to 4,71) and NLA 1st liners got 50% more points than 1st liner in FEL (0,75 ppg to 0,5 ppg).

That is the only realiable fact we know from this season comparing NLA and FEL. Not some historic macignumber that dates itself back to the times when Pappa Helminen was still playing :D

That doesn't mean the conversion rate is off, because that used the prior 7 years of data. You haven't even posted one rate, just your guess work based on scoring rates. Most Finnish players who switch between leagues stays fairly similar, regardless of the leagues higher scoring. Aho's #'s aren't clearly more impressive, like you are trying to claim. For example, look at Perttu Lindgren.

No those numbers aren't taken from my hat. I checked them from the betExplorer statcentral. You can check these out yourself.

There was 1 player in FEL who had over 1 ppg while in NLA there was close to 20 players who had over 1 ppg.

Also nice that you mentioned Lindgren. He had 62 points in 50 games in NLA which means 1,24 PPG. His numbers were better than Matthews as you can see. There is no chance he will get selected in finnish national team even with these stats in NLA. Aho (and Laine most likely ) will be on that team. If you ask anyone who has had more impressive season Aho or Lindgren 100 % will say Aho. Eventho Lindgren was selected MVP of NLA

Have you seen his transition to NLA? he took 3 seasons to break a PPG, after having a 66 point season in 56 games, then 39 in 48, KHL stint for a year, 26 in 48 in NLA, 34 in 42, til he finally broke out this year. And what you posted are just league rates, they do not attempt to measure scoring across leagues at all. Scoring has almost always been lower in Finland, so NLA being higher again this year shouldn't drastically alter the conversion rate. What your posting is pure guess work that makes no attempt to figure out scoring rates across leagues. NHLe is far from perfect but it at least attempts to do this.

It affect drastically the conversation rate because it is the main variable in their calculation.

Really hoping Leafs pick 2nd, he could be our kessel-elite replacement :D

I'd rather him over Matthews considering we get Stamkos. If not... then it's going to be a tough call

JVR - Stamkos - Marner
Nylander - Kadri - Laine
Soshnikov - Bozak - Komarov

That's a disgusting top 9. Sad part is, there are a bunch of blue-chip top 9 prospects we have as well that could be playing in the NHL this year let alone next: Brown, Kapanen, Johnson, Hyman

No its not, the main variable is NHL point totals across leagues. NLB has lower scoring, by your logic it is harder to score in NLB than NLA. Or that the KHL is harder to score in than the NHL.

I know everyone's been doing the Ovechkin comparisons, but a new one just popped into my head after reading HFFlames.

I think Iginla could be a pretty good projection. Big, strong, goal scoring RW, but not particularly elite skating. Thoughts?

I'd say Iginla was meaner and more physical. A lot of the Ovi comparison comes from how deadly Laine is with his 1 timer on the leftside. I'd say Laine is in some middleground between Ovi and Semin. Semin had amazing puck skills, and shot, not great skating or drive, Laine has all those skill but his shot is closer to Ovi in how he utilizes it, atleast on the powerplay, and he has the drive Semin never had. Has anyone seen Sm-Liga shot totals? As great as Ovi's shot is, he scores a lot because he generates a hell of a lot of shots compared to other players, along with his ability to shoot through defenders and use them as screeners. And in my viewing Laine seems better on the left.

Even Barkov was not this good in his draft year. He was more consistent though, which sums up quite nicely these two players: Laine just has more game breaking ability and star power. He looked like Malkin yesterday for crying out loud, against the best team in the league. In playoffs. At 17y old.

A superstar in the making.

Stylewise they arent similar to each other. Laine wants the puck all the time when on ice and he almost always bring the puck in to offensive zone.

Laine is LW or actually 2-sided. He played his junior years as RW but they realized that he can do more damage from LW with stick facing the goal. He has not played a single game as a RW this season ( including both Liiga and WJC ).

It is really hard to compare Laine to any player because his playerprofile is so special. I would say stylewise he is a hybrid of Ovechkin/Malkin.
