Spreading the talent is a winning formula in hockey.

Not really by itself. Only when you have suitable players for balanced combinations in each lines. I agree that Laine's line mates don't compliment his abilities and skills too well. Peltola maybe even somehow as a relatively well playmaking grinder, but definitely Ilomäki in the same line with Laine is a pure waste of scoring talent. You definitely should have a pure playmaking player in the same line with Laine, if you want to use his skills for the best benefit of the whole team. I really don't understand what Tapola thinks he is doing by persistently keeping pure sniper (Laine) and a second class but wannabe-first class sniper (Ilomäki) in the same line. Clearly not the smartest combination for the team...

Tappara is in pretty bad spot as they basicly only got 2 elite offensive forwards in Laine and Kuusela. Lajunen and Peltola can also be consired elite, but their best abilities arent in point producing part of the game. Main competitors have more offensive depth. Hifk have elite guys for 2 lines and kärpät have 3 elite lines.

Media/fans are speculating alot why Laine and Kuusela aint playing together. As Kuuselas point production in 5v5 has gone down alot from early season we might them playing together.

I also believe thats the only way Tappara can win the championship. Put all eggs in one basket and pray that line can produce 2 goals a game. Otherwise either karpat or hifk will win it.

Laine is the playmaker on that line. He is not a one-trick-pony pure sniper, like everybody think he is. Great overall offensive player, carries puck, makes plays, snipes. If you put any other playmaker there, it leaves another line without a playmaker. = less depth.

Obviously the chemistry with Ilomäki isn't working in a best possible way, but there's not much other options without making other lines worse.

Not true really, as Laine himself even said that if he could choose giving a pass to an open scoring opportunity or shooting himself from that open opportunity, he would always choose the shooting option. He does have the talent for doing also good playmaking if it is really needed, but his attitude is still a sniper attitude, which means that it is not smart coaching to use him mostly as a playmaker especially when Tapola is in fact having often two playmakers (Kuusela and Järvinen) at the same time on the 1st line. I think Tappara's lines work relatively well like this too, but I also believe that they would be a much more dangerous team if they had for example Laine-Lajunen-Kuusela as their first line. Järvinen could also bring more playmaking to the 2nd line with Peltola and Ilomäki.

Yeah the great thing about Laine is that offensively he has a complete talent. He has it all: shot, vision, hands, size, skating. He wont ever be the most explosive player on skates but he is learning how to use the skate. I know they have been working with his skating position, which was a major problem for him, and its looking better and better.

His defense is far from complete but he still has some defensive qualities that will be elite level in nhl. He backchecks aggressively and has size and strength to help him. When on offence his off the puck movement is good. Knows where to wait for one-timer and wants the puck all the time and is in right places to get it. Defensive off the puck movement is pretty bad and is constantly in wrong places. He can save some of these errors with his physicality and athletism. Lacks a lot defensive awareness.

Even thought he is complete offensive player i would still think he would be best utilized in sniper-role at nhl level. Best thing about him is that he can shoot from a pass and he can create a lot changes from himself. When you have Laine on ice you want constantly feed the puck to him because that's where he excels. Thought you want to give him the puck in the most advanced position where he can create scoring changes for him and linesmates. Thats why he aint a typical playmaker style player. Also he isnt "200 ft" player and most of his strong defensive abilities shine in offensive zone and middle zone. But with his endless offensive talent I strongly believe that with right kinda center he can be a 50+50 superstar. He also has gamebreaking abilities and hunts for goals. He is the one who can give you overtime goals in Stanley Cup finals.

The main reason why i believe that he will be a superstar at nhl level is that in the end what seperates superstars from the rest is their mentalside of game. Laine is really looking growing into a superstar role and all his daily activity goes into being the best hockey player on the planet.

edit: Laine is lucky be in Tappara because they are magics in making big players skate better. They are working with ex-speedskater Risto Rosendal who is superb skating coach. The main principle in his teaching is to get better skating position. Butt down, head up. That way your balance will better and you can see ice all the time. Tapparas/his trackrecord is better awesome in teaching big players to skate. Barkov, Lehterä, Kontiola, Laine etc. They all were horrible skaters when they came into his training.

@kunekune Very cool info regarding the speedskating coach.

Man, I love Laine as a player. He's easily #1 in this draft for me. Matthews is a heck of a player but I see a tremendous upside in Laine that Matthews doesn't have.

Whats the difference between:

and...

??!

answer: NOTHING

To contribute i hope his confidence and out-of-the-box attitude and creativity will be contagious with Puljujärvi (who I feel relies more on the coach than himself sometimes, which isn't bad per se but in his case he could play with more impulse imo)

Alright, I'm calling it now. I have a strong feeling that at the doorstep of the draft Matthews is not the consensus #1 anymore. Laine is just amazing and getting better with huge leaps. He is also 7 months younger than Matthews. I predict Laine is going to be a huge factor during spring (FEL playoffs & worlds) and make this race super tight.

I'm not saying Matthews couldn't go 1st OA. It is likely that he will. But it definitely won't be a no-brainer call.

Laine is playing second line minutes with not so awesome line mates. Not saying Ilomäki and Peltola are bad players but should the kid had be playing with Kuusela from the get go he would be over PPG this season without a doubt. He certainly has more point scoring potential than Barkov did at the same age (just without the complete game). However not getting that 1st line ice time and not playing with players that can match his creativity are inflating the production. Anyway, it doesn't really matter since scouts are evaluating his game on the ice instead of stalking stats. I think he's going to be the best player of this draft year in the long run, but when there's a sure fire franchise center on the table the agencies (or franchises) are hesitating typing his name on the top of the list and teams are hesitating to take the gamble. Really really hope to see Laine in the Worlds'. Make it happen!

Laine in Leafs would be awesome. I wouldn't mind Edmonton either though.

I think he could challenge Matthews if he plays well in the worlds. If Matthews plays for team USA we would finally see them play against each other as they play in same group.Thats of course if he gets to play there, I think OJ was the last one who played his draft year.

He looks big and slow in those videos. Even his shot looks slow. Is this just an optical illusion?

Is your video playback speed at 75%?

In the one-timer video it looked like everything was sped up, like the fans were all in fast-motion, but his one-timer still looked like it floated on net. He scored but it looked like he shouldn't have.

The shot went under the goalies pad before goalie had time to move into correct position.

That hair ain't gonna last. Receding at age 17? Not gonna rock a lion's mane by the time he's 25.

Fine for me. A bald and 115 kg full developed goal scoring machine will be even scarier for the opponents goalies and defencemen. Oh what nightmares they will have...

I really doubt thats the case, silky hair look thin when wet but even if it is they already invented a pill that prevents hairloss.
