RW Matvei Michkov (2023, 7th, PHI) Part 6

That was me. But in the end i was sold on Wolf as he made much more if an impact than Michkov. The totality if Wolf’s season made him a better candidate than Wolf. And clearly the NHL agrees. They got it right!

That’s not to say Michkov won’t be a good or great player. He should be.

Now quit your crying, its getting old and sad!

In the end you were sold on Wolf? He played his worst hockey of the season after you posted Michkov was one of your finalists. Why not just admit you chose to be a hypocrite for the sake of arguing.

It is certainly trending that way considering Michkov’s rookie year at 20 was equal to Kucherov’s second year at 21. The only disadvantage Michkov has right now is supporting cast. Kucherov walked into prime Stamkos/Hedman while Michkov is pretty much a one-man show until the Flyers surround him with better talent.
Kucherov walked first into the Q, had to play in the A and after that in the Bolts middle 6 with limited TOI. The first full year with Tampa he played with Johnson and Palat and had ~5 minutes less TOI per game than Stamkos but only 7 points less at the end of the RS. In the PO he already outscored him badly.

If Michkov is any close to Kucherov the Tortorellas and Tocchets of this world should and will not matter…

He will never be close to Quinn Hughes, that's not going to happen.
Also Matvei will never be prime Kuch, come on now.
Hutson already had a better rookie season than Quinn. Get outta here with your baseless takes. Absolutely no reason why he couldn't be as good as him in his prime.

Same thing with Michkov and Kuch.

Kucherov had just 2 more points in 2 more games than Michkov in his first full NHL season. Of course scoring was all time low in that season, but Palat - Johnson - Kucherov line was one of the best in the league, they were pretty young and had great chemistry. Oh, and the last, but not the least Kucherov was 1.5 years older.

Because minds can be changed as the season progresses. I has celebrini #1 in the first half. Then Hutson. Had Michkov top 3 by Feb. then in the end, wolf top 3.

if you aren’t adjusting your opinion as the season progresses, you are a biased homer. Clearly you fall into a certain category.

Its pretty funny that you are so butthurt over a meaningless 3rd place position. Like a soccer mom bitter that her boy did not get a participation award.

All that matters is who won the Calder. Who finished runner up or below is pointless.

Again, you’re making no sense. So by February you were convinced Michkov was a Calder finalist over Wolf; Michkov proceeds to have a lights-out close to his season (29 points in 29 games after 2/1) while Wolf plays his worst in that same span. You post on March 31 that Michkov is your Calder finalist, yet somehow your decision changes to Wolf with only days left in the regular season????

Care to explain that one? Or you want to save that one for later and tell me how a goalie with a losing record over the final 2.5 months of the season was “fantastic” and “carried” the Flames?

I looked at the entirety of Wolf’s campaign and reassessed and realized he was the better and more impactful performer. I listened to Flames fans and Flyer fans. And then my final assessment was he should be 4th.

And low and behold, i was right! The NHL agrees with me. As do most folks on here.

That said, great accomplishment for Michkov to finish 4th place. So many great players. He deserves a participation award but unfortunately the NHL doesn’t hand those out! :(

Oh you so had to poll other fans to make decisions for you when the data was right in front of your face? Kinda sounds like the standard PHWA voting process lol.

And how the hell is a losing record and a .900 save% over the final 2.5 months “more impactful”? Probably cost the Flames a playoff spot more than anything else.

Well i was low on Michkov after multiple benchings and horrible two way play. But Flyer fans raised awareness to his one dimensional offense and that had me rethink his value.

But you weren’t low on Michkov. You said yourself with only weeks left in the season that he was your No. 3, warts and all. You also said he “closed the gap on Celebrini.” Sounds like a compliment to me. Which then begs the question as to why you’d need advice from specific fans to make a decision after you confidently said in early April that Michkov was a finalist.

Ignore button exists these people have been here since draft day trashing Michkov because he was passed on by Montreal. There’s a reason for it, they know how great he’ll be. Just move on man, you can reach people who refuse to debate real facts. Not being able to see who you’re replying to just reinforces the point.

Celebrini went on a tear and obviously blew Mixhkov a way. After reviewing Wolf’s exploits later, i realized that we all were heavily biased towards skaters and discounted the achievements of Wolf - particulrly with the Flames competing for a playoff spot.

Now only a homer would ignore the warts of a player who wears their jersey and ignore the achievements of an opposing player , just as you have done. Why is that? ;)

Michkov was on a tear more often than Celebrini, he outscored Celebrini at the start of the season (don't forget about 3 OT winners) and after 4 Nations. It's just Michkov hitted a wall at the middle of the race, and Celebrini didn't. But as I said for about 2/3 of the regular Michkov was significantly better than Celebrini.

Celebrini will continue in a low pressure environment so will put up huge numbers. Tocchet will make his players accountable. He’s Torts in that way. Michkov will suffer under Tocchet just like under Torts.

I don’t understand. Are you saying that Michkov can’t perform when asked for accountability?

I’d rather have a guy who produce less but play the right way and wins championship. I wouldn’t want to be the coach to come in to Chicago 4 years from now trying to teach accountability to Bedard. It’s a multi-year learning curve and I’d rather my players get used to it while they’re rookies rather than in their prime.

Imagine if Toronto had a coach like that 5 years ago instead of Keefe. They probably would’ve won a cup already. The Leafs were better in the PO (although inexperienced) under Babcock than they were during the entirety of Keefe’s regime.

Yeah, then Celebrini and his -31 is exactly who you need...

You completely missed the point - Which, to be frank, is not really surprising coming from you.

I perfectly know what is your point. Players have different responsibilities. Some just score goals and points, others play defense, then there are those do both thing, but not as good as pure offensive and pure defensive guys. If you force a offensive wizzard to play defense, it's not about accountability, it's idiocy, and we saw it from Tocchet very well. He basically destroyed Vancouver and left.

It's pseudo accountabolity, and it's what that can hurt Michkov.

Homer? A Ranger fan is a Flyer homer? Have to remember that one lol.

“After reviewing Wolf’s exploits later” means you would have noticed his second-half struggles, which you clearly had no clue about since you said he was “fantastic” (which he wasn’t) and carried the Flames, which he stopped doing two weeks before Valentine’s Day.

That’s why Crosby has 3 ring and Ovy only has one.

It’s also not a coincidence that the only season Ovechkin really committed to a two-way game he won a cup.

It’s not surprising to see Florida having so many deep run when your offensive leaders are also your best two-way players.

Vancouver had their deepest player run in a decade under Tocchet and could have easily be playing in the finals last year if not for weird injuries to key players.

You can’t have a well rounded, functioning team if your best players don’t fully commit to playing a two-way game. You’ll end up like the Leaf, with a few players closing in on 100 pts every season with the inability to win a best of 7 series in the playoff against a lesser talented but more committed team.

Celibrini -31 is irrelevant right now and the fact that you brought it and then doubled down on your take that Michkov should be free to do whatever he want on the ice (so that he could get as many points as possible during the regular season) tells me that no, you still don’t understand what my point is.
