RW Matvei Michkov (2023, 7th, PHI) Part 6

You can tell these bozos pushing the "Michkov is a mess defensively" narrative dont actually watch him play. He was fine defensively all season, especially for a rookie. They just take the handful of examples of Michkov taking calculated risks leaving the zone early that didnt work out and extrapolate that into a judgement on his entire game. What I saw from Michkov most of his rookie season was a winger that works to get the puck back when his team doesnt have it.
His work on the boards was impressive.

Hopefully he works on his height, maybe grow a couple of inches in the off season. He also needs to work on his skating badly. He needs to fix these 2 major flaws in his game, if not he will end up being nothing special.

Michkov was at #4. If he had been top 3, you would have the same article saying it is criminal that Wolf/Celebrini/Hutson was not nominated.

That's what happens in a tight 4 player race. There will be one left over. The Good thing is that the trophy doesn't matter one bit.

Yeah, the article is half good and half bad. Good because it says Michkov had a good season and is going to be a superstar - hard to argue with this. Bad, because actually nobody gives a f*** for Calder. Attention span of it is about season, maximum two. Ask hockey fans did McDavid win Calder, and 80% of them won't give you correct answer or any answer at all...

Matvei just needs to find himself a rack. That should do the job.

“navigate one of the most difficult languages on Earth, adjust to a different ice surface, culture, and system—all under the notoriously exacting (and at times unforgiving) eye of John Tortorella.”

Incredibly ignorant information not surprising tho. KHL rinks are the same as the NHL and despite what the author may have heard Michkov has used a toilet his whole life.

Of course he had no access to McDonalds for a couple of years ago which is actually a positive!😏

This was Torts plan in the off-season...

It may actually be better in the long run that he didn't get a nomination for top 3, that end-season discussion with Briere was a sign of great things to come.
Mich is in the mold of the most competitive stars in the league. If his work ethic matches his mindset and attitude then skies the limit

I agree, Bill Barber got shafted by the New York writers who voted for Steve Vickers. Vickers had a nice career but nothing like Barber's. So Matvei could very well have the better career. He had to deal with this year and the kid is a rink rat who really wants it. He really impressed me this season. Can't wait till he learns English

He was definitely not winning it so not getting a nomination does not even matter.

Still I think he was the best rookie of all

Hutson older and better team

Wolf older and better team

Celebrini given all the ice time he wanted on a completely garbage team

@Garbageyuk

Neither of these show any bias.

Speculating about concerns others may have is not bias; it’s just reporting.

Bias would be a media outlet or pundit saying “Michkov is a risky pick because _____”. Again, speculation about others possibly having these concerns is not the same thing.

“Media bias” also implies a widespread, coordinated effort to slander someone based on false information. This is tinfoil hat territory, but par for the course on HF.

What benefit would the media achieve by having Michkov drafted later? lmao. Absolutely nuts 😂

You are so dishonest it’s comical.

So stop being lazy and counter my claims with evidence that says otherwise.

Still waiting for you to provide links for the following:

1) “Large numbers of people saying he’ll score above point per game.”

2) “Large numbers of people and media saying he’ll…score 100+ points.”

3. “Large numbers of people and media saying he’ll run away with the Calder...”

So I’ve combed through the last four threads of this and I can’t find one post from before October that predicted Michkov would hit 80-100 points this past season. Was this ever discussed? Always got the sense the consensus ballpark estimate was 60-70 points.

I think that there is significant confusion on their part regarding the nature of the claim.

Many people asserted - as did I - that Michkov would be a 100 point player, but that didn't mean that we believed he would achieve such in his first season.

Or they're just making up nonsense that, perhaps, a single person might have suggested and then extrapolating it to a wide swath of hockey fans.

He was #4 though. it would only be criminal if one of the other 3 was left off.

Hutson was not on an appreciably better team. It was for the most part a one line team offensively.
Hutson put up more points and he is a defenseman. Celebrini is definitely better and Wolf alomost dragged his team to the playoffs. This season Michkov was the 4th best rookie at best.
