Well, Since the Flyers are in the free fall, it might be time to let Torts go

A bad week. Hardly free fall. Flyers just took two of three games from the Devils and had won four straight at home prior to this recent skid.

The Devils game skidded off the rails after the Tippett injury and the power plays. The Islanders and Avalanche are two.of the hotter (veteran) teams in the league.

Both games were competitive and teaching experiences on what playoff hockey looks like.

I feel 'doesn't play defense' and 'good defense' aren't the only asks of a player, especially a winger.

Michkov has a lot of room to grow and a lot of age to grow into it. He likely will never be great at defense, he likely will never be Selke level.

He'll likely develop the skills and confidence to be effective to his team despite those shortcomings. He'll understand how to be an outlet pass, how to support the breakout, how to be a support option for board battles, etc. He'll learn to understand when the offense is looking to get the puck up high and when they are going to cycle low and will be able to get to his spots to pressure his options.

Who knew this was gonna happen with Torts as Coach (oh wait, everyone). Flyers need to be in a spot to be developing young talent, not trying to play as low event hockey as possible to get games into overtime and hang on for dear life in the standings. A young talented rookie like that needs to be developing his ways and consistency in terms of generating offense at the NHL level. You don't want to coach the offense and risk-taking out of him too soon because you're trying to get him to treat every shift like Triple Overtime in Game 7.

Well there's 2 here:

Neither of those breakaways were a result of him cheating out of the d-zone early. 1 of them was on a 3 on 3 OT goal..

Playing defence when the other team has the puck in your zone isn't really a "system', it's just "hockey".

Not to diminish the play but that was deeply uncomfortable to watch. Gave me flashbacks of my coaches yelling at me in junior for cheating the zone. I almost wanted to sit myself to the bench and I haven't even put a pair of skates on in a year lol

It's not cheating on defense, Bure scored like 100 goals like this, and no one was considering it's cheating on defense, it's calculated risk and it works for Michkov.

It'll be cheating if he does it all the time, but he does it only when he thinks there is a good chance to get the puck being all alone behind opponents' defense. I call this anticipation and smartness.

There are definitely enough grinders and board hogs on this team. And I wouldn't even say that Michkov's board game is bad, he actually wins a lot of his board battles and also pretty good at protecting the puck in them.
