Goddamn I hate it that TPS coach Kalle Kaskinen put Petteri Wirtanen as the center for Kakko for today’s game against Kärpät. If you want to use Kakko efficiently you goddammit don’t play him with a 0+0 one way center!

Wirtanen is a horrible center for offensively gifted wingers. Absolutely no offensive skills at all. Wirtanen is a pretty good shutdown center, but you absolutely should not play him with offensively talented players, as he will make their offence non-existant. He is seriously that bad offensively. A center should be the playmaker and the one whom can control the play for his wingers, when you want to have an offensively solid line.

This situation is a bit like how it would be with playing Lowry as the center for Laine in the Jets - just this is way worse than that would be.

Sure it is good to have a true two-way center playing with some offensively gifted young wingers, but make sure that the center truly is a TWO-way center, and not some kind of a goddamn shutdown center for the 4th line.

If this idiotic approach continues, no use to expect Kakko getting anymore goals or points out of the power play.

Was going to say this. Wirtanen is a slow defensive-minded player. You need someone that excels in the offensive game to line up with Kaako

Damn straight! This is just one example of Kaskinen's bright ideas
Other example is TPS' powerplay which doesn't work at all now six games in and he hasn't done anything to change that.

Even excluding Kakko: he put Filppula, one of the best centers in the league, play out of position for him... just what the f***? I'm actually glad that they didn't produce, the dumbass might have thought he is a genius for that experiment.

Can someone tell me how Pajuniemi is playing considering you guys are watching these games? I see he doesn't have any points yet, but is he playing well?

He's playing in the fourth line. So he's playing with not the best offensive players. He has been ok, had couple of changes but pretty invicible so far.

Indeed. What a brainfart considering they badly needed goals in this game in particular. Just a terrible call by the coach which I hope was just a one game stint. It felt sort of like watching ELL in the NHL. :D

That aside, Kakko had an excellent opportunity to score another game winner but couldn't get a clean shot and he almost assisted a third goal for TPS when (I think) Palve missed an empty net from tight angle. Didn't look anything spectacular in the first period but he got his game together going into the second and third. Geez, I wished Filppula would know how to score goals. I have no frigging idea what he was thinking when Kakko played him the puck while he was facing the net/goalkeeper almost in front of the net, but instead decided to carry it behind the goal rather than shoot, only to bury the chance for no purpose whatsoever.

What an exciting player, really the player-type that I personally enjoy. Excellent hockey IQ and very skillful in tight places. Very hard to find any special weaknesses in his game.

I don't care that with whom he is playing with. He has that kind of tool set, that he might produce no-matter who are his linemates. I prefer that to be a real definition of an elite player.

When there is hundreds of pages of discussion about player's linemates, there might be some weaknesses in that player's own game...

Sorry, but you have a bit wrong idea about hockey. There is not a single player not named Gretzky or Lemieux whom would do really well with wrong kind of players in their lines. And even those two all time greats did enormously worse if they had to play occasionally with some offensive scrubs. Their worse was just miles better than the other player’s best was usually.

It’s a team game where every single player has weaknesses and strengths. And if you have the kind of linemates that make it pretty much impossible to use you strengths, then you will do poorly offensively.

Wirtanen is a very bad center at playmaking and he plays so slow that his linemates will not get the puck from him to any good areas. The play dies constantly when he gets the puck in the offensive zone. He is also so slow and bad with his offensive IQ and creativity that he is never available openly in the offensive zone. He is just a pure killer of the offensive play for his line.

Horrible to play a young and extremely offensively talented player with this kind of an offensively crap center. The longer this continues, the worse it will be for Kakko’s confidence.

And who said he didn't have Forsberg's toughness again? Kakko made a complete joke of the defence on that second assist. I instantly got the feeling something was going to happen when he started skating behind the goal and create some distance. That's how the best do it. What a play! Can't frigging believe he's only 17.
