Rantanen can only wish he had the talent and skills Kakko already has.

Kakko might well be on his way to have the greatest NHL rookie season of all time by a finnish player, Rantanen had his adjustment to NA ice in the AHL.

Even how great he is he won't have The greatest rookie season ever. Cause thats exactly what Selänne had. Not only as a FIN but greatest ever by a rookie.

Kakko would need a Rocket or art Ross/Hart for that. So you can figure out The rest.

I don't like to see a prospect whose not even been drafted thinking he can skip the most important tournament in his age group. If Hughes did the same thing, I'd have the same reaction. None of them are too good for this tournament.

WHC is the most important tournament for the players in his age group. Everybody should keep their focus getting in. Unless it is an Olympic year. Nobody puts junior tournaments above those, nobody. Or if they do, they should stop playing hockey.

If team Finland wanted Kakko in the juniors they simply wouldn't have invited him to the mens training camp.

I disagree. He showed last year how he played in the U18 tournament and was probably the best player on the Finnish team. He doesn't need to play in the U18 tournament this year as he played with the U20 already earlier.

It's disappointing but I think it is smart to think forward and try to make the men's team.

This exactly. Kakko scored 10 points in 7 games in the WJHC last year while leading his team to gold medal AND being the best player for Finland at the same time. He really has nothing more to prove at this level. If anything, the only thing he'd have to gain is to prove superiority versus Hughes by grabbing yet another gold medal this year just under his nose.

Kakko is already fireproof top 2 pick in the draft and U18s have nothing really to offer for him. I don't think there are much if any professional scouts who'd consider this move to affect negatively upon him. From his point of view no point risking for injuries and it's better to prepare to play at the higher level. A loss for the WJHC team no doubt still. Then again if Hughes is as good as they say and USA doesn't get a boatload of NHL enforcement, he should get a ticket as well and we'd have them fight it off at a better stage.

Yep. Mainly because Laine was so polarizing due to the injuries and the personal issues along with the otherworldly shot of his.

It was the constant back and forth "told you so" between the two camps of "career Mestis player" and "greatest goal scoring Finn ever".

Yeah and because us Finns sometimes tend to get a bit too excited about our higher-tier prospects..

I have only gotten excited about Kakko. Too many Finnish prospects failed while I still believed in Finnish hockey system for me to get excited anymore.

Obviously...

Sigh, that's very disappointing.

Hopefully this will not be a trend. I don't like it when prospects think that just going to u-18s once during their u-17 season's good enough and afterwards it's not worth participating.

He already won gold medal at u-18s last year, he played a full season in men's league and won gold at u-20s during it. Why the hell would he go play in the u-18s again, he has nothing left to prove there? Kakko needs to play against the best players and the best place for it is in WC. It's no surprise that he would want to focus only on the WC.

Canadian and Finnish fanbases going at it, two of the most passionate ones in the business. Hey, maybe Edmonton or Vancouver get Hughes and it can continue.

Yeah it wasn't really directed at you. I'm mainly talking about claims such as "Kakko > Rantanen right now" etc.

I'm pretty much the same when it comes to Finnish prospects. Too many have busted for me to not be skeptical towards them.

Doesn’t Canada do the same? Once you’ve played with an older age group, you’ve graduated from the younger ones. Correct me if I’m wrong.

I believe that no one has compared Kakko with current Rantanen, Barkov etc.. but comparing him with prospect Rants and Sasha..

I don't get why it is negative to try your best to get to WHC team. He is working hard to get in.
