Devils discussion (news, notes and speculation) - part III

The rangers have made trades, the Canucks have made trades, the pens have made trades, the canes have made trades, the flyers have made trades, the ducks have made trade, the sharks have made trades, the stars have made trades.

Tom is sitting on his ass.

Context matters here. No shot were the Devils in on either Rantanan or Miller. They may have checked in on Miller but I dont think it was legit option. The Pens made a deal with the Canucks because of their Miller deal. Flyers and Flames deals are not deals for players I would have wanted. Maybe the only deal that hurts was the Dallas/Sharks deal because of Granlund.

The Devils are not going to be big game hunting this deadline.

You know exactly the same amount as the rest of us your just being negative and making negative assumptions. As I said if the deadline comes and goes and no deals are made then by all means rip whoever apart.

Why am I the only one that is happy with this team?

I must be the village idiot.

All of you posting the 'playoff odds' drive me nuts, as if limping into the playoffs with a poor second half and limping out 2010 style would be some grand achievement. Not to mention those odds only get worse if they keep losing going into the break. Then the excuse after the break's gonna be Markstrom was rusty, or whatever - it's always something with this group.

It's been five weeks, when do we start caring about them consistently sucking? Why should we assume they'll just bounce out of it when it's been one thing after another since Christmas losing to bad team after bad team? I'm just tired of the underachieving and excuses, making the playoffs is the bare freaking minimum they should get out of this year.

Probably mostly about expectations. Personally, pretty happy to make the playoffs whether they limp in or are coming in on a hot streak. But I may be happy with just that because I also believe even if this team were playing well, Carolina is going to send them out on their ass in the playoffs.

No I was telling someone the other day that even with the bad January I am not nervous about this team making the playoffs and being impactful there.
You should be. You don't have the luxury of playing teams like the Sharks, Ducks & Sabres in the playoffs.

It's a good team that's looked close to being a great team.

People want to believe the 'rebuild' switch flips off and the 'window' switch goes on, but it's the jump to absolutely professional we're having anxiety about here. They're playing badly - I don't think anyone, including Keefe, disagrees with that. But one, they're never really out of games and two, it's pretty obvious what needs to be done roster-wise.

The problem with Meier is not just that he misses too many good chances, he is also supposed to be driving his own line now. All I see is a pretty bad and sloppy puck handler who skates around one guy and then skates into a couple more and loses the puck. Shot selection is another thing, it's as poor as his vision. He had all the chances in the world to play together with Jack or Nico and he is not a good fit for neither. I'd say it's because he doesn't have the hockey IQ to play with guys like that. He could be a physically dominating power forward, but he uses his strength way too rarely. All in all, that trade was simply a giant mistake.

Meier is a 2nd line player on pace for roughly 60 points. His contract isnt the best but he is producing like he normally paces for. He's a bit overpaid but not by a ton. Also take into account that he isn't getting 1st line powerplay minutes to boost his stats. That makes a difference when it comes to anyone's offensive numbers. I agree though that we need to get more out of him and a few others.

It feels like Jack is having a pretty good season by his own standards but he isn't on pace to break100 points...I thought Jack was going to quite simply surpass that by this point in his career. I think it is safe to say that we need more from him as well if he really is a Superstar level talent like his big brother Quinn.

Whine. Whine. Whine. That's all I ever hear.

He is literally the only every-night-threat to score outside of the PP1. Maybe throw in Luke.

Get him a playmaking center and then get back to me.

Nico has too much on his plate atm. Sorry, putting him with Nico isn't the answer.

Get Meir someone who can set him up around the hashmarks or below.

He literally has to carry the puck into the zone, beat the defenders, and take the shot.

Give him a break and get him a true playmaker to play with.

Once that's done, you all can bitch about his performance.
