A lot of holes, huh? Can you expand on that?

Lack of effort, zero consistency, cannot take over games, cannot step up when it matters most, inferior playmaking abiltiies and vision, questionnable hockey sense

Most Foreurs fans want him gone from the team

Didn't you just write a piece last week claiming that Gauthier can do everything Mantha can and then some? Also claiming he is a potential top 10 pick? What caused such a quick change of heart?

I don't really watch the Q, but opinions really seem to be souring on Gauthier lately. I've read multiple reports with the same concerns over Gauthier's hockey sense, passing ability, and vision. For all the flack Mantha got leading up to the draft none of these things were a concern with him. It will be interesting to see where Gauthier goes as he is looking like he might take a tumble on draft day and go in the late teens. He has a very intriguing overall package, but from what little I've seen he looks like a bit more of a project than the top 10 pick that he is/was heralded as at times.

Gauthier's major flaw is consistency and always engaging. When he's on he plays a complete game with no weaknesses and can control a game but when he's off he'd be invisible if he wasn't so big. He's been the opposite of Logan Brown this year as the years gone on his consistency has gotten worse as Brown's has gotten better.

After the 3rd game, Gauthier said Blainville-Boisbriand was playing boring hockey.

Not the kind of thing you want to hear from one of your players when you're down 2-1 in a series.

Because of how he finished the year and his playoffs, it wouldn't be surprising to see him fall in the draft. Personally I was expecting him to get over 50 goals this year, so only 41g is a bit of a let down.

However, I don't think all is lost with this guy. He's now got an entire year to get better, and you would have to think that the ending to this year will create a drive in him to prove himself next year.

In his draft year, Mantha had only 2 seasons in the QMJHL behind him. In his third season he shut down the haters.

Gauthier after three seasons should have looked way better in the playoffs.

I wouldn't be surprised to see him slip closer to 20-25 than 10-15

As an Islanders fan I would love that. lol

All that being said I was going to ask why is this guy ranked so low. I thought he looked good at the World Juniors

Feels like this years Jake Virtanen...it's fine if they take him after the first half of the draft, but not near top 10.

Rise & Fall Of Julien Gauthier

Hi everyone,

I was just looking to see what everyones opinion was of Julien Gauthier. He started the year ranked around 8-12 and seems to have fallen closer to the 16-22 marker. I've only caught a handful of games myself watching Gauthier play and was curious as to what is the biggest contributing factor to him dropping.

From what I've seen, he is of course a towering body on the ice, seems to skate well and come with a strong offensive package.

Do you guys think it's worth taking a shot on Gauthier around the 10 spot or is the upside not big enough to not take Mcleod, Keller, Jost, Brown

His shooting percentage at the start of the year was like 29% which was clearly unsustainable, as the year went on it became evident that he wasn't capable of elevating his line mates play, as demonstrated by his low assist totals and he was no longer scoring goals at a torrid pace that you might be able to overlook the fact that he wasn't really doing much of anything other than scoring.

BIG winger vs 4 Centers.
He will likely fall behind all those guys

Depending on where they see Rantanen's future...and if someone unexpected falls...I wouldn't be surprised if the Avs pick at #10 came down to Gauthier and Logan Brown. The team needs a PWF on the wings (with only AJ Greer in the pipeline with that potential) and a big Center to contrast MacK/Duchene (since Greg has played on the wing in the top 9 & Soda will be exposed in the expansion draft). So whichever spot they aren't pencilling Mikko into is likely where they go in the draft; assuming that neither of these kids sneaks into the top 9.

Could be a tough sell with Jost/Bellows/Rubtsov/McCleod likely to still be on the board at our pick; but McCleod reminds me too much of Bleackley to think they'll pick him, Jost is probably too small for Roy, and Rubtsov not getting to shine at the u18s is probably going to keep him from being picked that early. Bellows seems like a good fit for the Avs, but reaching for him at #10 with more talented players sitting on the board; would make the Timo Meier comparison that I like to use too painfully real.

Another power forward winger that belongs in the top 15 IMO is Bellows. I would pick Bellows over Gauthier

I like Bellows a lot to, and I'm more confident in him making it in a top 9 role than Gauthier. But Gauthier has a higher ceiling, and I feel like he's the one who's more likely to become a genuine top line difference maker, rather than "just" a sweet-compliment...which is what I see in Bellows (thus the Timo Meier-comparison, which is no insult).

With the Q connection and Bellows going the NCAA-way to boot; I think the Avs would favor Gauthier. With AJ Greer getting his career on track with RN, the avs already have a kid who has given them good cause for optimism RE; eventually filling a top 9 PWF role. But the question of whether his ceiling will turn out to be a pure third-liner/forechecking-nightmare; "just" a middle-6er, like a bigger/faster/more-skillled Jamie McGinn; or a genuine top 6er who can make an impact next to Mack/Duchene...remains utterly unpredictable.

So I think the Avs have an incentive to roll the dice on the higher potential of Gauthier, despite him cooling off in the second half of the season...assuming that they look to add that PWF winger at this spot and aren't looking for their big Center instead; in which case, the most likely candidates for their pick would probably be Logan Brown & German Rubtsov.

Besides not being big and physical Jost seems like a player Roy would absolutely love. I could really see him being Roy's favorite forward to use, like O'Reilly was.

McLeod might have the same "is he just a third line defensive C" concern with their mediocre production and high end defensive ability. But that's really where the similarities stop. I honestly think they soured on Bleackley for off ice reasons, which was a big reason they picked him, and not so much his lack of development into a top line caliber player. McLeod is going to be getting picked for his physical talents and high potential.

Bellows would be a reach just because of his rank. The kid is very talented. That shot is freakin filthy. And it's not like the rest of his game is weak.

On paper Rubtsov just doesn't seem to have top line potential. Great defender, but it seems he doesn't have the skill to be much more than a 50 point 2C. I wouldn't mind a guy like that. But to me he is the one who would be a reach over more talented players.

I haven't paid much attention to Jost, so can't speak to how much he'd excited Roy. Though I can't shake the feeling that Roy is going to want either his big C to eventually replace Soda, or a PWF that we can be confident in becoming a legit top 6er. Which would certainly work against Jost being the pick. Curious to hear you say that you think Roy would fall in love with him like he did ROR though. Guess I probably should track down some games of his to watch him more closely.

I just don't see the high potential in McCleod, he's got good tools/compete/speed; but I don't see much creativity or strong offensive instincts, in his game. He's faster than Rubtsov, but I don't really buy that he'll bring more offensively than the big Russian. And I agree with you on the off-ice concerns with Bleackley being a big part in them choosing to move on; but that doesn't mean that they would've been satisfied with his offensive upside had those issues not existed. If that's the case, then that would work against McCleod hard.

Again, I really like Bellows to. If Roykic see Mikko as a Center, then I think our pick will come down to Bellows v Gauthier; which I posted my thoughts on above...and wouldn't complain about either one.
