I don't claim to have seen a ton of Gauthier but his hockey IQ seems a bit low to me.

His brain isn't on the same level as his physical tools, which are insane.

Not sure about that. He reads the play as well as anyone that's why he has such a great nose for the net. His playmaking is subpar but really I can see that part of his game growing rapidly once he builds even more confidence

got him #6 behind Matthews, the Finns, Chychrun and Dubois, ahead of Nylander/Chuk etc.

too good of an all around player, his style is gonna translate flawlessly to the NHL

Interesting ranking, admittedly a bit too high for me. Personally he's in the 9-12 range for me, and it looks like he's usually rated around #15 on the scouting publication lists (McKeens, ISS, hockeyprospect, etc).

Particular reason you have him so high? Just curious

i had him in that range before i actually watched him play (just got around to watching Q VODS, i was going through OHL games previously), you cant truly appreciate how good he is just by watching him in highlights (which is what i did) or looking at his point total.

hes the complete package, he does everything you want a player to do. amazing skater, amazing hands for a guy his size, hes a good net front presence (which is something that i find isnt as easy to teach, for guys like Simmonds and Gallagher that type of play comes naturally to them), hes also a very effective ES player (good puck possession and defensively responsible). i've seen 2 interviews where a TEAM scout has him as high as #2 OA (in the mix @ that spot w/ other players).

you also have to remember that Gauthier plays on a team with great Q vets, he doesnt get quality minutes like say Dubois does (everything runs through Dubois/Lazarev/Svechnikov for Cape Breton), Gauthier has to play behind Beauregard/Richard/Aube-Kubel (much older players).

EDIT: heres the 1 of the interview's i was talking about (@ 0:50 secs, the scout is Prendergast)

Earlier I had him as high as you TT1 but he's fallen for me a bit just due to the play of other players really.

I have him at 9 behind the top 3 forwards, the top 3 defenseman, & then Tkachuk and Dubois.

I was really high on Sergachev previously (like really high, had him in my top 6, been following him since last year) but i've seen him play alot and his play has dropped severely in the past 1-2 months. Never been that high on Juolevi and Chuk.

Had Gauthier in the top 5 I think 2-3 months ago, but I've been looking at him more carefully since and I have big concerns about his Hockey sense. I think he needs players around him to make it better. I would rather see the reverse from him. He just doesn't pass the puck enough. His production has slowed in second half of season because other teams know what he'll do when he's in possession of the puck (take a shot, get around the defender or try to deke his opponent).

the world juniors really showed how unpolished his skills are though, hes big enough and moves fast enough...should probably play more tougher too with that size

He looked great in world juniors not sure why he kept getting bench everytime his line was on he was a threat. In the Finland game he finally got PP time and Canada looks great with possession with him on the ice then he got taken off pretty quick. I think Canada scored but the kid has high iq and was not given a fair shot at all.

Same with beavuiller seemed like the coach just wanted to live and die with the Virtananen nhl body lol.

I can speak of his time in the Q this year but would love to have him on my team if he drops to the habs elite skating puck handling and vision.

can anyone name his weaknesses I'm curious does he get lost sometimes or something?

Sounds like you too high on Julien. Dubois blew him away in recent head to head meeting between Cape Breton and Val d'or. Dubois better player by country mile despite being 9 months younger. Wasn't really close. Gauthier was like -2 in that game while Dubois +6.

My take on Julien Gauthier, a possible top-10 pick in 2016:

The Val d'Or Foreurs have had some luck with skilled power forwards in the last couple of years, starting with Anthony Mantha and now, Julien Gauthier. While some fans are reminded of Mantha when watching Gauthier because of a couple of similarities, namely size and shooting abilities, both are still different players.

Mantha was drafted 20th overall by Detroit after lighting the lamp 50 times in 2012-13 for Val d'Or. He improved to 57 goals in 57 games in 2013-14, also adding an astonishing 24 goals in 24 games in the playoffs (total of 81 goals in 81 games).

While Gauthier may have scored less goals than Mantha in his draft year, with 41 in 54 games, he is being talked about as a potential top-10 pick in a very good and deep draft, which would be at least 10 spots ahead of where Mantha went. While Mantha was an incredible goal-scorer (and still projects as a 25-30 goal scorer at the NHL level), Gauthier seems to have the potential to score even more, while being a bit more complete player. The truth is, Gauthier can do everything Mantha can, and then some.

Of course, the road to the NHL is a long one, and lots can happen before Gauthier even gets a taste of the action, as Mantha did recently, even scoring his first ever goal against his hometown team, the Montreal Canadiens. It is not a guarentee that Julien Gauthier ends up better than the former Foreurs Anthony Mantha.

The nephew of former Calgary Flames 1st rounder Denis Gauthier, Julien has drawn comparisons to Rick Nash, Jeff Carter and Corey Perry. He is a right-handed power forward who plays right-wing. His wide selection of skills vary from dominating the crease, deeking out helpless defenders, sniping top corner from the circles or outskating pretty much anyone on the ice while still maintening control of the puck.

Gauthier is a goal-scorer through and through, as is evident by looking at his goal-to-assist ratio. He had 38 goals and 35 assists last season, and now just finished with 41 goals and only 16 assists this year. He projects as a goal-scorer at the NHL level, obviously, but not a uni-dimensional one. He is able to make plays, and thus, if paired with great players, should still rack up a bunch of assists. I view him as having the potential to score 35 to 40 goals consistently in the big league, perhaps even more during his peak years.

The Foreurs, who picked the physical monster Julien Gauthier 6th overall in 2013, were one of 2 teams to get more than 100 points this year in the Q. They finished 2nd overall behind their arch-rivals Rouyn-Noranda Huskies. Gauthier was a big part of that success, leading his team in goals with 41. Gauthier has struggled a bit offensively since coming back from Canada's WJC team though, but still played well enough to justify not dropping in the draft rankings.

What if the Montreal Canadiens lucked out and were able to grab the gritty, skilled, and quick Julien Gauthier? They certainly could as they should end up with a pick within that range. If they do, or if a team that also lacks top-end skills within their top-6 forwards does, Gauthier may just be able to win a spot in training camp. It is a possibility, as Gauthier's physical tools are already top-notch. He has the strength, the speed and the shooting arsenal to play with the big boys right away, not to mention he is a late birthday and will turn 19 in October, when the season starts. But he could certainly use a little more seasoning in order to work on his consistency and his all-around game.

As a habs fan i wouldn't touch Gauthier in the first round, i'd even take Laberge before him (not with their first pick of course).

So the Foreurs are eliminated in 6 games. Pretty big surprise.

Gauthier ends the series with 2 goals (both in game 5) and 3 assists. Pretty underwhelming. Fits the theme of his 2nd half.

Too old for the U-18, so this was his last chance to impress the scouts.

Wasn't impressed with any of the Foreurs' big guns in this series. Gauthier, for all the skills that he has, also has a lot of holes in his game that he needs to work on.
