Petan also seemed to regress in junior after getting drafted. I didn't see much of him from then aside from world juniors, but the numbers are weird: his scoring peaked at 17 years old, at 46 goals, and then he scored just 15 goals at 19 with the Winterhawks.

The dynamic of that team changed a lot in 3 years, as it usually does in junior. That last year was also when he scored his most goals in the playoffs

Dumais has already proven that he can carry an offense - Petan was only a high scorer alongside other top scorers and then fell off when they left. I'm sure we can find a better example though of an actually dominant junior player that didn't make it as a regular in the NHL.

I was thinking Brooks but hes closer to Petan. I watched him a lot in Regina and never thought once he'd be an impactful NHLer

His 130 points sits 2nd as most in a single season in Halifax Mooseheads history.

1st is Ramzi Abid in 1999/2000, who had 137 points.

To tie the record, Dumais needs 7 points in the remaining 3 games of the season. 8 points to break it. If he doesn't do it this season, he should come close again next year should he likely return to Halifax next season.

nah i don't see it.

Frankly, it just seems like such a waste of talent to have Dumais in the QMJHL next year too. The best thing for his development, since AHL is not an option, would surely be to go to Europe.

The amount of disrespect this kid gets is insane. He literally carries a team's offense and gets compared to frauds like Locke and Petan who either were dominating as overagers or getting carried. A joke. Dumais will be a star in the show, no matter what kinda bs ''experts'' have to spout off to justify their laughable opinion at last year's draft.

People thinking Europe could be an option just don’t understand the CHL-NHL agreement. If there were changes made to the agreement to allow players to play in another pro league, they would prioritize the AHL instead of Europe.

This debate has been going on for years but the agreement has way more positives than negatives. It allowed Dumais to play against talent and improve his game. He’ll be just fine even if he plays another season in the QMJHL.

That's precisely what some of us would dispute, and why we'd like to see him in a harder league. He's making it look too easy, and not playing pro style because he doesn't have to.

Corey Locke destroyed the O in his "19" year-old season, like Dumais is doing now.

Matt Foy wasn't anything special and finished 19 points behind Locke.

Not saying Dumais is a lock to be Locke, but Locke was the same age as Dumais and he wasn't carried.

League is better suited for a smaller guy now, too, so the probability that Dumais makes it and makes an impact is much higher than Locke.

Playing against 18-19 yo talent at 16-17 made him the player he is today just like as a 18-19 NHL prospect he helps others around him and playing against him get better as well. That’s the point. That’s why the NHL accepts to let its prospect under 20 yo play in the CHL instead of the AHL. He also plays against better prospects than him.

I could see him start the year with the Blue Jackets and get sent down to play in the WJC and end the season in the QMJHL. He still has things he can improve at the junior level.

So was Locke, hence why 19 was I'm quotation marks.

I thought it was obvious, but I guess not.

I saw a lot of Corey Locke back in the day and he just wasn't the calibre of player that Dumais is. You can just see it. I liked him and rooted for him, but the skating and lack of lower body strength held him back.

Locke wasn't getting a sniff of the World Juniors then, while Dumais got a long look. Unless he takes a real step back next year he'll be in the lineup.

Not sure what Matt Foy has to do with this. An interesting player back then but arrived in the league at 19 and was basically just another Miguel Delisle.

Foy has nothing.

Just the poster suggested that Locke and Petan were either overagers, or carried by someone.

I was just pointing out that Locke wasn't carried by Foy and thar Locke wasn't an overager and then made sure to mention that Dumais doesn't equal Locke. Dumais could be another Locke, but that probability is realllllly low. About as low as the probability of me making the NHL.

Okay I see, I did not mean to pile on you. Your points are reasonable.

It happens, all good. Maybe you're a Columbus fan and Dumais is having an amazing season.

A few have said, or not directly made it seem like what he's doing isn't impressive. It very much is.

Also, if he becomes even slightly good prepare yourself for "Dumais to Montreal" posts.

That's a good way to know that the "market" is still betting against Dumais. Habs fans aren't super interested.
To be fair, it's usually not players in the minors a lot want. Some are good at knowing Columbus is in the same boat as the Habs, so they're not looking to deal prospects.

However, if next season the Jackets are rumoured to be in talks with Montreal for anyone, you better believe the return will be Dumais.

On that topic, I think that it’s a blessing for him to be drafted away from Montreal as it is easy to be critiqued on a daly basis with this organization. Also, I do not think that he would have been a good fit as most of their best players are tiny and their prospects at forward are very small too, other than Slaf. I have a feeling that if all the young guys jell together, this Columbus team could be special in 3-5 years whether they draft Bedard or not.
