The last few games especially he's stood out in a good way. His line has been generating so many opportunities, it helps playing with panarin and Anderson, but it's not like he's being carried by them. He's making smart plays and when it comes to cycling the puck that line is absolutely lethal. Both Anderson and Dubois are bulls going into the boards and panarin is the perfect complimentary piece with his skill and speed.

It's only a matter of time until he starts putting up the points, especially if he's playing almost 20 minutes a game.

People keep saying this, but I have yet to see a lack of hockey IQ in Jesses game when he's playing with confidence and not fumbling the puck. I'm always curious when I hear this comment how people come to this conclusion on Jesse. Is there something specifically that you see him do a frequent basis to suggest this, or is this the typical HF parrot mentality for a high draft pick that needs a little extra time to develop?

I'm genuinely curious, and don't mean this in an attacking or offensive way, I'm just trying to see what others are seeing. Jesse reads the game well on the defensive side of things, has always shown tremendous vision of the ice, and doesn't ever really seem to be caught out of position. He had trouble adapting to the speed of the NHL on smaller rinks when he first came over, but with better puck handling you really don't see that anymore. Curious to hear your thoughts (or anyone who believes Jesse has low hockey IQ) about what makes you think that.

Tendency to make poor decisions with the puck and fail to make himself available. But he's looked a bit better in this regard in the small sample I've seen of him in NHL this season.

Ok I can partially see that in his game last year at the NHL level, but I don't really think thats a fair assessment of an 18 year old kid going from FEL to the NHL where the certainly fought the puck at times last year. I'm curious if you felt this way about him watching him amongst his peers in tournaments like the U18 and U20's, because I think relatively speaking his hockey IQ actually looked elite in those tournaments. I just think people are mistaking him not being ready and still adapting his game for the NHL as lower hockey IQ, and I think this was further accentuated by him struggling with handling the puck last season. I just think its hard to make a call on a players hockey IQ based off one small sample of games in the NHL at 18 years old when he wasn't ready.

People will always resort to making comments about low hockey IQ when a young player struggles adapting to the NHL game. It just an easy cop out statement without much merit to it.

"Well, he can dominate against his peers but has yet to show he's able to do that against adults." One very common point of criticism about Jesse's game that has raised its ugly head since Jesse's been 16. As if dominating a men's pro league was a prerequisite for any highly touted teenager in order to fulfill his potential.

I agree with your post wholeheartedly. I see nothing fundamentally wrong with Jesse's IQ or his game in general. In fact, I consider his vision and awareness as one of his strengths.

Rantanen was called a low IQ player in his 1st games in the NHL by some, look at him now.
I just read some beating comments on Tippett after his 1st few NHL games at 18y.

Our expectations to 18y have gone through the roof and at times we should just pause and remember how young these guys are.
 
Jesse sees the ice very well and seems to be able to anticipate plays very well. If that is low hockey IQ, so be it. Personally, I dislike the term.

He has had a bit of a learning curve, but he seems to progressing constantly. I'd say that that if he continues improving defensively at this rate he is going to become a really good two-way player.

I agree. We've gotten lucky being able to watch some 18-19 year old's step in the NHL and make an impact right away but we need to remember.. not all 18-19 year old's can do the same.

The first two periods it seemed like he was playing with a hot potato instead of a puck. And with his fingers instead of a stick. :laugh: Thankfully he turned it around in the third.

Tippett is a low-IQ player at the OHL level. Now, you don't write off 18 year olds, but calling Tippett low-IQ is a fair criticism.
 
TML is clueless, why would he bench Puljujärvi and even Khaira(whose even been good) and replace them with completely useless plugs. Especially Pakarinen would be an NHL player on zero other teams. Unbelievable!

Puljujärvi has been one of the Oilers' best forwards in the recent games and what does TM do? I hope that Jesse just has little flu or something and he will play tomorrow against Bruins. I also can't understand why TM scratched Khaira.

I really dislike the handling of young players that coaches like McLepricon seem to do constantly. Might work with some youngsters, but in general it is a bad approach, especially if a talented kid has problems with his self confidence, like Pulju.

I have to say that McLepricon is also otherwise exactly the type of coach that I dislike very much. Conservative style, minimalistic, passive and overly defensive hockey is what he believes in. He is just lucky to have magnificent players like McDavid and Draisaitl, whom have still kept his head barely out of the water. But this season it might be that even those excellent players will not save him. It’s his playing style and deployment that sucks. These type of coaches can do well though, when they have great goaltending and enough of real star quality players at the same time. This is is happening at the moment with another bad coach, Paul Maurice, and it happened with McLepricon last season. I just hope he will get sacked during this season...

This will teach him a lesson. It was good move last year to sit him and it will develope him this year too. Nothing is better for young player than not playing.
 
Bizarre move if Puljujarvi was scratched and it was not the flu. He was one of the best Oilers in Buffalo Friday night. One of only a few that played with any urgency and buzz. Crazy way to reward the kid.

And what would the lesson be? That by being one of the better forwards in a team that has most other forwards playing like crap, the result is that you get benched or scratched. What the hell is he really supposed to learn from that? That his coach is a moron? Well I’m sure it didn’t take Jesse long to understand that already...
