Hall, Draisaitl, Nurse have not been disappointments, and while RNH hasn't exactly become what you'd want out of a 1st overall pick, he's still a very good player. If edm messes Puljujarvi up, they should just start trading their high picks for established players...... its getting ridiculous.
What edm top pick hasn't been a disappointment? Mcdavid?
You guys are atleast fortunate enough to draft so many w 1OA... (Meaning you tried) Tell me which team is lucky enough to actually see most if not all their high picks end up surefire studs? If edm messes Puljujarvi up, they should just start trading their high picks for established players...... its getting ridiculous.

Draisaitl has exceeded expectations most had for him and Nurse is looking good (although probably caps out as a 2/3 due to limited offensive abilities). Hall was a disappointment at points in Edmonton, but is still pretty close to what was projected for him. RNH is a dissappointment, but still a good player. Yakupov is the only outright bust. Oilers have drafted terribly past the 1st round for the last 10 years, that (along with Chiarelli's trading) is hurting them more than their drafting in the top 10.If edm messes Puljujarvi up, they should just start trading their high picks for established players...... its getting ridiculous.

10 years? Have the Oilers ever drafted well outside of the first round?Draisaitl has exceeded expectations most had for him and Nurse is looking good (although probably caps out as a 2/3 due to limited offensive abilities). We've known for decades that our development and drafting are garbage. We were hoping that would change under Chiarelli. Too early to tell, but it isn't looking good.Healthy scratched tnt. Yikes
Hopefully not another top prospect ruined by this organization. When do we blame player development and organizatiinal culture over drafting.
Schultz
Dubnyk
Yakupov
MPS
RNH
Gagner
Schremp
Juat to name a few
Nah Jesse's got another 2 more season after this before he enters Bennett territory.Puljujarvi for Bennett? Bust for bust?
Todd makes some odd decisions like keeping Letestu on the #1 PP, but hopefully now that he's put Draisaitl back at centre we will see Jesse get a chance. I personally think they should just try him with McDavid. My reasoning is that McDavid really hasn't found a RWer that clicked, and in the 4 games that Puljujarvi got to play with McDavid last year he scored 4 points. Todd just needs to stop punishing the kid every time he makes a mistake or has a bad game, while handing out no punishment to his vets who can have 10 bad games in a row (or 24 in Letestu's case) without being demoted.I think, if the Oilers want to really develop Pulju, they should just play him with McDavid or Draisaitl. Pulju has been good defensively, in the corners and on the forecheck. So it's not like he would just be a freeloader.
God help Yamamoto. And whoever the Oilers pick in top 10 next draft. We've known for decades that our development and drafting are garbage. We were hoping that would change under Chiarelli. Too early to tell, but it isn't looking good.

I was trying to think of a reasonable time frame, but it's been bad for awhile. But, I would add, getting Messier (a top 20 player of all-time) in 3rd the probably means they did well once. I mean, has their been a better player who was drafted and not taken in the first? Then past him they got Andersson in the 4th that year, and Kurri the next year. So you got 1226 regular season goals from those guys. Probably used up all your post 1st round luck in the 80's.10 years? Have the Oilers ever drafted well outside of the first round?

They still have a bunch of those scouts left, very hard to overhaul a whole scouting staff. Most guys are pretty much lifers with their current teams. Scouts don't tend to move around dramatically. I looked at it last year, and I think you had retained around 65 to 70% of the guys who previously served under Lowe/Tambellini/McTavish.Did this not get an overhaul along w. The old boys club ?
Jets seem to fit that bill. You guys are atleast fortunate enough to draft so many w 1OA... (Meaning you tried) Tell me which team is lucky enough to actually see most if not all their high picks end up surefire studs?
A partial overhaul. I think a big piece was added a year and a half ago when we brought in Keith Gretzky, but its hard to tell with development in only a year and a half. I have no confidence in Bakersfield right now though. I hope Yamamoto learns enough in junior this year to make the team out of camp so he doesn't have to go down there. As questionable as some draft picks have been, if we built a proper development system in Bakersfield that would help.Did this not get an overhaul along w. The old boys club ?
It was hyperbole, the Oilers drafted very well all throughout their first few drafts, but that was in the early 80's, as you said. We haven't been a good drafting team in my lifetime and I'm in my mid-30's.I was trying to think of a reasonable time frame, but it's been bad for awhile. But, I would add, getting Messier (a top 20 player of all-time) in 3rd the probably means they did well once. I mean, has their been a better player who was drafted and not taken in the first? Oh boy, you're about to get jumped by Oiler fans. I'd run10 points in 36 games in his NHL career thus far, not to mention he's not really lighting up in the AHL either. He's heading down Virtanen territory very quickly.
Oilers fans are already making the same justifications that we do when talking about Virtanen
