dont blame the kid
you cant go from 4th liner to 1st in a matter of a year

blame tom renney HC and lowry

brutul !!!

The tournament was played on an international ice surface. Virtanen isn't going to dominate on an international ice surface. Last year the tourney was played on a smaller ice surface and that's where he plays best. He's a big, physical kid but doesn't have enough speed to dominate on a large ice surface, not yet anyway. I also think he has gotten used to how games are called by the refs in the NHL which is why he got called. In the NHL refs don't call those kinds of penalties. At the World Juniors if you tap a guy's legs and he goes down you're going to get called for tripping no matter what game it is. DON'T BLAME VIRTANEN, BLAME THE GAME.

Craig Button had Virtanen ranked in the 40's, in his rankings.

His reasoning was JV's poor hockey IQ and decision making.

Button's brother is employed in the same building that Virtanen played his WHL games.

He knew something. We all laughed at him but Button was right.

I used to be reasonably pro-Virtanen, thought he'd be a pretty good NHLer, with something like Erik Cole upside. However, I do think I was significantly underrating how poor his hockey IQ is - he just doesn't see the game well. I'm now thinking he looks a lot more like a bigger, more physical Matt Frattin, a kid with really impressive tools, but with the blinders on all the time, not able to contribute much offence at the NHL level due to a lack of vision. I do think he likely ends of a bottom 6er, with maybe the odd, short stint in a top 6 role.

He played an awful tourny. Took some dumb penalties. But did you even watch the tourny? Too slow for international ice? I mean come on, he's arguably Canada's most explosive skater. Definitely not a speed problem.

Interesting. Button does a better job than he's given credit for sometimes.

People here tend to have any problems that go against Bob Mckenzie's consensus style rankings. Thats why I actually like Pronman and Button because they offer unique takes. Don't get me wrong, I love McKenzie's rankings because they provide an industry baseline, but as shown teams draft boards can be all over the place (Bruins this year, LA taking Hickey etc), let alone what individual scouts lists.

Barzal, Marner, Strome, Point and Konecny all looked faster to me...

Yeah blame the refs for enforcing the rules!

He was terrible. and The Canucks should be concerned

He is back in Vancouver. and has been told to take till Thursday before he returns to practice. . He will need to face the Vancouver Media after practice. Rest assurd Canada he will be grinded by the toughest Media in the NHL in the Toughest Market to Play in :yo:

Montreal and Toronto are probably as bad or worse. As bad as he was, he media should give he kid a break. The Province calling him and making "The GOAT medal Winner" headline was disgraceful. At the end of the day he's a 19 year old who volunteered to play for his country for nothing outside of pride. I've bashed Virtanen more than a couple times this year and tourny, but I'm nothing but a forum commentator. Blasting a 19 year old (and going after him in a press scrum) is the type of Dave Feschuk hack job that Hockey needs less of.

Montreal & Toronto is bigger

But the entire Vancouver Market is nasty as nasty can be....

Only one thing matters that is winning a cup... anything else is a failure

Lol, until you guys run HoF players out of town, it ain't as nasty as Toronto or Montreal IMO

You can criticize his play all you want, but raking him to the coals for "costing" Canada what is ultimately a children's hockey tournament is ridiculous.

This is good news for Vancouver that he had a bad tournament.

Vancouver's other 1st round picks in Schroeder and Hodgson had huge WJC tournaments.

Remind me what happened to those guys again??:laugh:

It's a 5 game tournament and people are treating it like scripture.

:baghead:

5 games apparently determines the rest of a prospects career.

Kid will rise from this. Btw that's what exactly These players are ....kids

its more how it fits into a pattern of the last 18 months. For example even if the Finns lost today Rantanen didn't add to his point totals I wouldn't be worried because he was on an upward trajectory and 5 games in 8 days is nothing, Virtanen has not exceeded or even lived up to expectations since his draft date.

Has Dal Colle?
He's been regressing even worse this year.

Has Haydn Fleury?
He was a healthy scratch after his draft year 3 times by Sutter and regressed pretty bad.

Everyone has up's and down's after the draft.;)

But playing for Canadian team and the guy is instantly labelled a bust.

Yeah all 3 have been disappointments to date. There's no bigger red flag than a guy who regresses or stays stagnant in Juniors. At least Virtanen has only been bad in the NHL.

Pathetic. That headline reveals way more about the sports' section editors at The Province than it does about a kid who had a lousy tournament.

The media is scum.

Kicking a kid who played for his country while being injured is low. It's why I can't wait until all newspaper organizations go belly up because there's no need for them thanks to social media.
