Except Marner was one of maybe 4 forwards on the team who created anything along with Strome, Konecny and Barzal. He had an average showing and far from a bad one, he was the one creating chances with the game on the line. leaf/marner fans don't need to own up to anything, it wasn't great but it wasn't bad like you are trying to say, your trying to bash others to take fault away from Virtanen. Fluery wasn't great, but Hicketts and Hickey were equally as bad, no one on the D stood out in a positive way. But Virtanen had the worst tourny out of the entire team and its not close. Plays died on his stick, he couldn't find the holes in the d for playmakers to find him and took some of the dumbest penalties I've ever seen. He was as bad on the top line as Quennville was.

Virtanen definitely deserves critisicm for those penalties but the rest of his game was strong. Was our best forward in period 1 and 2...even read the game thread from. Beginning if u want.

Flurry was horrible and Marner was invisible 5 on 5.. He wasn't awful in the tournament but just meh. And that penalty he took with 3 minutes left was just as costly and dumb as Virtanens other penalties.

Arguably one of the worst players for team Canada throughout the tournament.

How on earth does a 19 year old record 1 point in 5 games, especially when Lowry was playing his line more than any other.

Simply a brainless player without composure. He has 0 hockey IQ and possesses tunnel vision on the ice. Can't use his linemates and does what he pleases.

Canada would have been better off had he been cut from day 1. This guy went top 10?

Clearly you haven't heard of Frederick Gauthier.

Who was the Jake Virtanen of last year.

I also want to see some evidence for people claiming hockey IQ can't be developed or taught.

Gauthier played on the 4th line, Virtanen on the first with Dylan Strome.

Gauthier was picked in the 20s, Virtanen in the top 10....

Lol.

Yes, this is an excellent comparison.

I mean, one is a 6th overall pick who is supposedly a big time goal scorer, the other is a late 1st round pick that is known to be a defensive specialist.

The 6th overall pick did noting but hurt his team, over, and over.

The late first round pick did everything he was advertised to do, include take the winning face off in his own zone in a one goal game with seconds left.

Like I said, fantastic comparison.

Ya Virtanen was bad but I dont think he was Fredrick Gauthier bad. They played on same team last year and Virt while younger made a bigger difference than Gauthier

What evidence do you need, just look at him lol.

Raffi Torres 0.5 IMO

Talking about all players w. The claim that hockey iq can't be developed or taught as claimed by a few here. You either got it or u dont apparently.

Except Gauthier made the team as a defensive/PK/face off specialist and wasn't counted on to score.

He didnt make poor decision after poor decision all tournament long.

Not to go off topic but yes Gautheir did. Got relegated to 4th line , 13th forward role and PK specialist.

So scoring on your own net in the gold medal game is as advertised.

:laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh:

Good to know

If anyone was counting on Gauthier to score, 19 year old or not, they were mistaken, not even (most) leaf fans were expecting that.

Everyone knew exactly why he made the team, there was no "relegating" going on. His role was pretty clear from the beginning.

Why even bring up the Gauthier lol..

I agree dude. I know Jake was bad but he wasn't scoring on his own net bad !!

Anyways glad to hear JV will get to develop w the Canucks furthe and once they miss the playoffs he can be losned to UTica for some spring hockey.

Boone Jenner might be a decent comparable, although he plays centre I think.

Virtanen
draft year- 1.0ppg
draft +1 - 1.04ppg
draft + 2 - nhl-ish

Jenner -
draft year - 1.04ppg
draft + 1 - 1.13ppg
draft + 2 - 1.46ppg

Virtanen was the better goal-scorer in junior, but Jenner is a center and looks like at top-6 guy already.

He asked the question of how does a 19 year old only get 1 point in the tournament

pretty simple answer.

Jake Virtanen and Frederick Gauthier

I think Gauthier and Virtanen have similar offensive ceilings actually. Both put up very similar numbers in junior. However one is smart and good defensively while the other is dumb as a rock and cannot play a puck possession game.

Decent comparison. Although I think Jenner is more grittier and Jake more explosive.

I like Jenners game and leadership.

Best case scenario for JV is if he turns into a mold of Jarome Iginla.

Yeah, true. I don't know about Jenner's skating, but Virtanen's is really good.

Iginla had similar draft year numbers to Virtanen, if we ignore eras for a second, but 2.15ppg in his draft + 1 year is basically double Virtanen's.

I think if he's a 35-45 point guy then that's probably a win. Maybe a year or two where he breaks 50 points.

I don't know what people are expecting but Virtanen will be a 20-25 goal guy in the NHL, that can fly and run people over.

Both put up similar numbers in JRs lol.

Gauthier -best season 22 goals
Virtanen - worst season 16 goals. ( Best season 45 goals )

Lol but it's non of my buainess

This is what I'm expecting as well w. High PIMs per season and a. Factor during 7 games.

Lol you know you had a bad bad tournament when you are being compared to Fredrick Gauthier !!! Nothing but up from here JV !.

Ps I can't believe Gauthier was drafted over guys like Theodore , Bukarovsky, Mccarron , Shinkaruk

Excellent point. If we look at goals they've both only had one season each with more than 21 goals.

However their points per game are very similar.
