Henrik Samuelsson

Birthyear: 1994-02-07 Age: 18 Nation: USA / Sweden
Position: RW Shoots: R
Height: 188 cm / 6'2" Weight: 87 kg / 192 lbs

Now playing with the Edmonton Oil kings in the WHL, 10-4-5-10-9

This kid was viewed as a top 10 from some scout last year but it seems that we forgot about him.

I never saw him play so it is impossible for me to do a scouting report on him.

I read a lot of good things about him but when I am looking at draft ranking for tthis year, he is always outside the 1rst round. What are your views on him?

Only seen two periods of action from him so far with the Oil Kings and I didn't find him that impressive. Clearly a very skilled all around player with good size and hands...but he made 3 BRUTAL plays with the puck in his own zone and neutral zone in my short view of him.

Clearly he's doing things right though to have put up 10 pts in 10 games so far. With that being said, he is playing on an elite team.

Will look forward to seeing him in the WHL stretch run and playoffs.

I saw the same thing out of Marek Tvrdon last year before he was knocked out. Mind you, that's a fresh Euro versus a player who has spent the majority of his career here in NA, but you get the sense Henrik is fighting the adjustment from wider passing lanes and more time back to smaller spaces.

Defensively, yeah, he's a bit of a rag and from what I understand that's nothing new... but I also feel with more time under Laxdal he's going to develop a finer appreciation of what his body and skill can do in both ends.

I've seen only two games with him as an Oil King, and he didn't stand out both games. 2GP 0P -1 0PIM. There were a couple of plays that were iffy on the defensive side (caught cheating). All in all, can't say much until I watch more.

I understand, he's on a new team now. I look forward to watching more games down the road here in Edmonton though as the end of regular season is coming. I hope to see him on the scoreboard when I watch, lol. I didn't get to see any of his 10 points so far. If he starts to get going like the way he can, the Oil Kings will continue to roll. That's a really good team.

I've watched 4-5 games with the oil kings. Watched his two goal night, fast release and good offensive instincts since both goals were about being in the right place and doing the right things without the puck. Hopefully as he adjusts to the team and the game over here the defensive lapses mentioned will fade.

Samuelsson with a great game last night that got cut short. He is playing second line with tj foster and curtis lazar and they are great together at both ends. Samuelsson played very physical and then when he caught a kelowna player knee on knee (coming in for the hit and then the guy avoided and they caught legs) he got kicked out of the game. But, not before the closest Kelowna player challenged him and Samuelsson pretty much pummeled the guy. He's really using his size well and as always his offensive game was impressive. I think playing with tj foster and getting a lot of icetime is starting to help him play both ways a lot better.

My assessment of him has improved and it was fairly high to begin with.

I like Samuelsson; he's really physical in the corners, and shoots and passes pretty well. I'd be happy if the Oilers took him 32nd.

Well since Colton Sissons' value has increased and he's projected to go around the middle of the 1st round, I would like the Pens to take Henrik, we need a forward prospect, The latest NHL.com mock drafts don't have him being drafted in the 1st round, Pens fans still like Ulf Samuelsson, we drafted Philip Samuelsson in 2009. Bring in Henrik :yo:

What are his weaknesses? skating? defensive zone play?

I think he could do even more offensively. When the team sets up in the zone he looks for open spots to shoot from and moves the puck around, basically like he's on the PP. He could carry the puck more from out of the corners and take it to the net more creating chances that way. He could be like a Malkin in the Juniors if he protected the puck with his body and drove hard to the net. He has the size and skill to do it. He's a shooter first I guess.

He's a good skater, though I'm not the best guy to judge that. He plays on the fastest line the Oil Kings have I think. He's strong on his skates too, a lot of tall guys go down a lot until they fill out but he doesn't seem to have that problem. Defensively no big mistakes or laziness or anything.

He's not a fast skater but he is a strong skater. He has a lot of the characteristics that make Johan Franzen successful. Strong on the puck, tenacious, borderline dirty type hitter. Still needs to refine his scoring abilities around the net. He's almost at a point a game clip with the OKs but could have more if he capitalized on even more of his chances.

Samuelsson has fit the OilKings like a glove. A bigger forward that can contribute secondary scoring is what he brings. I like him more than Sissons and I like Sissons a lot, I just think Samuelsson can play with skilled players more effectively.

That was Shane McColgan who gives up about six inches and fifty pounds to Samuelsson. Courageous and gutty play by McColgan. Im a big fan of Samuelsson. He should go in the second round fairly comfortably. I would love it if the Oilers were able to pick him up.

His game is multifaceted, good two way player, who is physical all over the ice and is a huge agitator, just like his Daddy. Has some decent hands/hockey sense to boot.

Strange season for Henrik, first playing for his dad in Sweden (Ulf coaching Modo where Naslund is GM and Forsberg assistant GM).

Ulf got some serious critizism for overplaying Henrik who clearly had problems adjusting to SEL style of hockey. Henrik had a good preseason and a couple of good games in SEL but he struggled most games with Ulf stubbornly kept on playing him.

I'm very happy Henrik is doing well in Edmonton. I strongly believe he is better suited to NA style hockey, also he is very young.

Ulf is doing ok as a coach I guess but Modo is in a very tough fight for playoff spot.

Samuelsson played really bad in Modo. Took really long shifts,no intensity and also alot of bad penatlys. I had never seen a player in Modo that had been worse and when he was sent down to juniors he did not stand out and players like Erik Nyström,Jesper Olofsson,Måns Krüger,Edwin Hedberg Tim Vesterberg was way better. I think he got ice time in SEL just because his dad was coach.

Sounds like a raw prospect. Low risk high reward kinda pick?

I actually think he's a very safe prospect. There will be some questions as to his offensive capabilities at the NHL level, but he has the kind of tools that can fit in nicely on the third line.

played against him when I was like 12,

He was amazing, but even cheaper/dirtier than he was good.

Irrelevant, I know, but maybe some will find it interesting.

I would say no. Has done well in international play in the past and is doing well now.

Could have been a personal situation playing for his dad or something. His draft ranking dropped from last year but it's stabilized around early second round and with oil kings poised to make strong playoff run he could rise yet.

4. Do you try and model your game after a player in the NHL?

"Not really, but I Like how (St. Louis Blues forward) Chris Stewart plays. He's a goal scorer that plays hard at both ends of the ice. I also like (Pittsburgh Penguins star) Evgeni Malkin. He's probably my favourite player."

5. Who's your favourite NHL team?

"The Pittsburgh Penguins. I have lots of reasons for liking them. My brother (Philip Samuelsson) plays for their farm team, my dad use to play for them, and I'm a fan of Evgeni Malkin."

:pens
