This kids toolbox is crazy. He has a chance to be special. Unreal shot, speed, hands. Great passing and offensive IQ. He's shown me he's not as raw as I thought he was during preseason (though still needs seasoning). And I say that disliking the pick, wanting Chychrun or Sergachev.

Not trying to hype up the guy or anything, he just surprised me. I thought he was more raw than he is. Excited to see what he can do after a year in the A.

For some reason, both he and his brother kinda reminds me of Alex Kovalev. The shot and shiftyness

Appears he made the Sabres opening night roster. Didn't think he'd be ready this year, will be interesting if he lasts part 9 games.

Sauga seems to really be missing him, they have talented players, but really lack that guy with high-iq to create for others. I know if he isn't in the show this year he'll be in Rochester most likely.

Seems like he'll play in Buffalo's opener against Montreal. Because O'Reilly/Okposo are uncertain but still!

Is he OHL or AHL bound after that?

It seems a given at this point that he's not going to juniors. I assume he will be in Rochester soon, possibly before the opener if the team gets healthier by then.

Odd. I only seen him play a couple of times in Pre-Season but he didn't look ready to me.

Hopefully they don't rush him.

AHL is a perfect place for this kid to develop. Let him work on his all around game while getting good minutes for at least this season. Wouldn't care if he didn't get a game in the NHL this year and then next year he starts to get mixed in with call-ups.

At this point, I'd rather see Bailey, Fasching (already up) and probably Baptiste be the first call-ups.

I think Nylander will be up with the parent club at some point this season. Have a feeling he will produce well in the AHL that he will earn the call up, perhaps to stay. Sabres are in a really good position with him being able to develop him in Rochester.

I agree that the AHL is the perfect place for him to develop. Like it would be for maybe 10 other players that aren't allowed to go there.

Honestly, I think it's ridiculous players like Dubois and Juolevi have to go back in the CHL where they don't belong anymore. Not that it's THAT bad for their development, but they would learn so much quicker and they would be ready to start next season in the NHL, no doubt about it.

They should create a rule that if you were drafted top10 or top15, you're eligible to play in the AHL even if you just been drafted.

Oh, and maybe Eichel's injury will open the NHL door for Nylander!

Good call by the Sabres. There's no reason why he should be in NHL when he's not ready.

Played in O last year already customed to North American hockey and playing with men in AHL will develop that further

The CHL produces roughly 50% of NHlers last time I checked with the NCAA 30% and Europe 20%. So 50% of the world is not subject to the crazy CHL/NHL U20 rule - they can play in the AHL at 18 or 19 like so many have, or back to Europe if they sort that out with the NHL team who drafts them. W. Nylander is an example as he was loaned by his Swedish club to the CHL and thus he was technically drafted out of Europe and not subject to the CHL clause.

This is not like 20 years ago where 75%+ of NHLers came from the CHL and that vast majority allowed them to dictate things which they still do to this day. Again, 50% not subject to it and even though the USHL is essentially the NCAA route, Svechnikov, Bowers, and others without NCAA commitments are going this route as it is on par with the CHL and allows complete freedom at 18 to go NCAA or AHL.

The USHL deals with massive changes every year for 18/19 year olds moving up and the focus of the league is exactly that - they can't lock U20 players for duration of junior eligibility and they deal with that reality and are doing just fine. If you know your players are not locked in, you adjust your business accordingly like USHL and Euro teams.

The CHL "but if we lost star 18/19 year olds the league would fold tactic" is just that - a scare tactic. t's really about trying to maximize CHL team value over the development of players and everyone on here rationalizes that logic to some extent. In my opinion the CHL should clearly have U18 exclusivity on its players but allow the NHL teams to do as they wish post draft in the same way the other 50% of NHL players are treated. Feeder leagues survive in the rest of the world without the U20 lock-in preventing qualified players from playing at increasingly higher levels.

If the CHL persists with this rule, expect more players to choose the USHL to preserve not only NCAA eligibility but also pro eligibility transition immediately post draft - just like A. Nylander did via a loophole in the CHL. Most don't have a loophole if they choose the CHL route. It is pretty clear NHL teams would prefer to see if player like A. Nylander are AHL ready and let them develop there knowing the option to send them to the CHL exists if they are not ready.

Nylander wrapped his debut AHL weekend with three points in three games .. backdoor feed seconds into Friday's opener, 1+1 earlier today, at least one post, and a disallowed goal .. a few lapses too figuring out what works at this level, but nothing he won't iron out.

I'd like to see the disallowed goal (for goalie interference) since I've heard it should have counted.

Either way 3 points in his first 3 pro games is a nice start

He had his first 3 pro games a long time ago.

Made this post on the Sabres forum and figured it could go here as well. As previously mentioned, Nylander had 1+2 through his first three AHL games this weekend and collapsed below are six gfy's from Friday (#1) and Sunday (#2-6). I finished watching the third period of yesterday's game today and will note that the scoring chances were there for an additional goal and two assists in that game, as shown in #2 (post), #5 (Schneider had a gaping cage), and #6 (Falk's disallowed goal). Meanwhile, #3 is an example of a casual moment from Nylander that led to a chance against, similar to the few lapses he showed in preseason games where he tried too much or thought he had more time than he really had. That's to be expected and something he'll adjust to with experience.

He looks pretty similar to 29 in Toronto :)

I actually don't think they are that similar. Alex is bigger, he also moves the puck quicker utilizing his linemates. He is really a cerebral hockey player also from my observations of him last year in Mississauga. I believe he and Reinhart will be fun to watch for years to come if they are placed on the same line. Cerebral players.
