Friedman mentioned it back in late Jan/ early Feb, and a few others have suggested that he had good relationships there with teammates and management and had expressed his interest in the Habs rebuild and a possible return to be part of it.

Not definite, but also has been out there for a while now.
That was months ago. Who knows what his relationship with his new teammates is. Also, why would any player want to be part of a rebuild?

Agreed it is unlikely Monahan goes back to the Habs. Not saying he signs with the Jets, but the most likely scenario is he signs with a team with a chance for success. He has done enough to get a nice deal as a UFA.

So if we have a deep playoff run you wouldn't resign monahan? Ehlers? Vilardi?
Not sure the playoffs have anything to do with it, but my solution:

- start running three offensive lines with relatively balanced minutes
- demote offensively inept forwards to the 4th line and keep them there
- space for Rut in the top 9

I don't think we have to do much more than to make Winnipeg look like a decently attractive option, nothing special or fabulous needed. But I also see a clear path to f***ing it all up.

Jets GM Kevin Cheveldayoff characterized McGroarty’s decision to return to Michigan instead of signing with Winnipeg this way.

“We made it very open to him at the onset that we were more than willing to sign him, more than willing to turn him pro. But in the same token, we need him to make that decision for what he feels is best for his development,” Cheveldayoff said in May. “I think Rutger is looking for an even bigger role where he can help lead a team to greatness and help his development there.”

So what happened between now and then? Why are the Jets suddenly exploring a trade of a top prospect with top-six forward potential and proven leadership abilities?

This isn’t a situation where the player wants out of Winnipeg because of his views on the city. Instead, there appears to be a disconnect between how Winnipeg’s player development viewed and communicated its plan with McGroarty and McGroarty’s view of his own future. The desire to play in the NHL played a big role in McGroarty’s decision not to sign in April; put simply, he viewed himself as more ready than the team did. At first, this difference in opinion didn’t appear to necessitate McGroarty’s exit from the organization. The relationship has changed since the start of McGroarty’s offseason, though. He no longer believes his future is with the Jets.

According to sources, McGroarty believes he’s unlikely to crack Winnipeg’s roster immediately and would probably have to spend time in the American Hockey League honing his craft, maybe even a full season. And the Jets have conveyed as much to him given their current roster, which includes plenty of forward talent with the big club and on the farm.

That’s seemingly a tough pill to swallow for McGroarty, who has seen many college teammates and opponents turn pro and immediately get NHL looks — including his two linemates last season with Michigan in Gavin Brindley (Columbus Blue Jackets) and Frank Nazar (Chicago Blackhawks).

“Winnipeg really needs to re-visit its development plan,” a source said.

most likely saw his teammates jump right into the nhl and thought he should be able to as well, difference is were a 110 point team while cbj/blackhawks are both picking in the top 4

Don't get why he thinks he should be gifted a roster spot right from the get go. Scheifele, Connor both played in the minors first before getting a regular roster spot. This just sounds like a dude that doesn't want to play for Winnipeg and if that's the case shoo , shoo buggar off .

He's an ambitious kid that knows he's ready for the nhl and will get the chance somewhere else. Are we really so good we can't find room for a blue chip prospect? I don't like what he's doing here but I can understand his issues with how the jets develop players (or dont).

we may end up trading ehlers and have an open spot, the problem is he would be fighting with lambert over that spot? should we guarantee it to him over lambert?

Maybe not, but I would have no problem guaranteeing him appletons spot.

Yeah at the end of the day this is a business. Rutger situation is not the same because his leverage is not the same as a CHL player or even European.

You do what you have to do to get the guy signed and give him the first 20 games. If his play doesn't measure up, THEN you worry about doing what needs to be done.

Jets were being a bit too transparent and it is being used against them, unfortunately.

This sucks but I think best reason to be optimistic is Chevy does okay when he paints himself into a corner. It draws in the vultures just enough to catch one most times lol
Yep, as much as it sucks I'm looking forward to a nice return. I think Chevy will do well.

The way I read this is that he thinks he should be given a nhl roster spot no matter what?

Why not come to camp, play well enough to force the jets to keep you?

Seems pretty straight forward to me.

f***ing kids these days. Beyond entitled.
Prospects playing well hasn't stopped us from burying them in the AHL before. This would be us reaping what we have sown.

People don't seem to understand that McGroarty won't get another shot at this thing. He'll only be a 20-year-old rookie once, and if he doesn't get to seize the opportunity to become a full-time NHLer, he'll quickly slide down the prospect rankings of any team. Then, at 23, 24, 25 years of age, he'll just be another struggling prospect with little success, a reclamation project of sorts, and he's certainly not given the leash he once warranted as a recent 14th OA pick, a WJC-winning captain, and his team's top prospect. The worse it goes, the less money he'll be able to make during his only NHL career he'll ever have.

The fact that a top prospect understands this, sees the body of work the Jets have put on display with their prospects, and deduces that his chances with them are going to be poor, is right, fair, and impressive at the same time.

It's business at the end of the day.

Dude wants to be in the NHL and has the leverage to make it happen.

Murats article even references what has happened specifically with Perfetti and Heinola and that it played a factor in his request.

I'm all for drafting college guys as BPA - but they have leverage. That means sometimes giving in to what they want to get a deal done and avoid the situation we find ourselves in today.

Hopefully it's not beyond repair but it sure sounds like it is.

Yeah, only the real good college guys have a chance to do something about where they fit in a teams pecking order.

If you don't give them what they want after two years in college you're trying your luck.

Hopefully we don't get hosed on this trade if it goes down and we can learn a lesson at the same time.

I'm rather confident that we're not going to learn a f***ing thing, but here's hoping, I guess.

For a team that praises draft and develop so much, they’re sure pretty shitty at it. But hey, as long as we can keep room on the roster for Mason Appleton, that’s all that matters. I’m still sticking with it, Chevy Is a horrible GM.

IIRC we guaranteed Copp an NHL spot. I think he's better than Copp. But we're also in a slightly different position vs then. (And I'm pretty sure we didn't guaranteed KFC a spot, or if we did, we broke the promise).

I'd love to see us have a 4th line specifically for skilled rookies to get sheltered minutes. Or at least 2/3 of the line.

One could argue McG’s play style would fit well on the 4th line.
